1757 Attractive Bellin Map of Java, Indonesia
1757 Bellin Map- Idee de L'Isle de Java J.N. Bellin was one of the most successful cartographers of all time. As the the French Navy's hydrographer and chartmaker he had access to the finest information available to any mapmaker and used this to publish a large variety of atlases including'Petit Atlas Maritime' as well as his contribution to L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' This interesting map comes from a 1757 edition of'Histoire Generale. This map of Java names the provinces. Districts, and kingdoms, as well as the major cities. The topography is nicely illustrated with detail to rivers, mountains and a volcano. The map has a very decorative title cartouche with a scale of distance. Description: This is a fine example of Laurie and Whittle's 1794 nautical chart or maritime map of northwestern Java. The map covers from Bantam Bay(Selat Sunda) and Hill(Serang. Indonesia) eastwards as far as Batavia(Jakarta, Indonesia) This region was a major battleground between rival Dutch, British, and Portugese trading monopolies. The Dutch and British in particular contested over northwestern Java, with its easy access to regional spice, in particular pepper, ports. In 1602 the British East India Company established a ... moretrade entrepot at Bantam to contest Dutch East India Company(VOC) control based in nearby Batavia. The Dutch, allied with a local Sultan, eventually drove the English out Bantam and Java itself. By the end of the 18th century, when this map was made, the Bantam entrepot was little more than a name on a map- as seen here- while Batavia further east had risen, with a population of nearly one million, to dominate Java. In 1800, just six years after this map was published, the VOC was formally dissolved and the Dutch East Indies established in its place as a full-fledged national colonial venture. 1867 British Admirality Map , the Java Sea & Passages to China, Rare Ships Map
This lot offers the map that measures 39 x 27 inches. The legend shows that it was compiled from information from the British and Dutch government surveys of 1867. The map shows the southern passages to China and the Sunda Straight. The very bottom of the map shows that it was published in London at the Admirality. Also. Along the bottom it shows dates that corrections were made. The last of these is dated October of 1877. I believe that was the actual print date of this map. There is a stamp with the name B. Falconer Company of Hong Kong. I believe that would be the company that owned the map and carried it on its shipping vessel. The map is made of a somewhat thick material. I believe it is parchment. The entire border of the map has a fold of canvas sewn onto it. This has protected the edges from tearing. The map has been rolled up somewhat ... moreloosely for more than 100 years and it no longer lays flat. There are some stains probably caused by water, which are mostly confined to the lower part of the map. There is one spot in the lower left hand corner that has a crack, this can be seen on the photo. The upper portion of the map; which shows Sumatra, Borneo, and the China Sea, is remarkably clean and in good condition. Please see the close-up photos for more details. This chart is in very good condition. There are some light smudges on it throughout and one navigational course charted very lightly on it in pencil. I have made some purchases recently and need to move some of my inventory like this great map.REDUCED OPENING BID! About two weeks ago I attended an auction that had a single collection for auction. From a WWII Army Air Corps veteran. The auction featured not only his own personal gear he used in WWII, but also as a major collector of militaria, artifacts that he acquired that ranged from the period of the Civil War through Vietnam. This WWII pilot escape map is from that collection. It is 21" wide, 38 1/2" in length. Other than fold lines it is in fine condition and could look great framed in a way to be able to view both side/maps. This is a cloth(silk? very light material pair of maps front and back. One side ... morehas the island of Borneo and the other. A map of Java. It is dated 1944 and expressly indicates it is for War or Navy Department only, not to be distributed to the public. It appears that some of the map details such as marshes, and topography/height of some terrain, would help a pilot get a better idea of where he was after being shot down. Borneo had been administered under British and Dutch control until the Japanese captured Borneo in 1941. Occupying the island until it was liberated in 1945. Borneo now comprises three nations: Indonesia, Malaysia, and the small nation of Brunei. The map on the other side depicts Java, which was occupied by the Japanese in 1942 and was never re-taken during the war; the Japanese surrendered Java when Japan itself surrendered in the summer of 1945.
