Mithridatis Regnum. 49.5 cm x 34 cm copperplate engraving. 61 cm x 51 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Amsterdam, printed circa 1700 We are pleased to offer this exceptional and very scarce original map(Zacharakis#2109) of north central Anatolia extending along the Black Sea coast from the modern Turkish cities of to and as far south as published by the Franco-Dutch mapmaker Pierre Mortier(1661-1711) whose son Cornelis went on to form a partnership with his brother in law Jean Covens that published under the well known name Covens& Mortier well into the 19th century. A master engraver but not a cartographer. Pierre Mortier's maps are in fact close copies of earlier original works, in this case a historical map compiled in 1676 by the prominent French geographer Guillaume Sanson(1633-1703) for his atlas Cartes Générales ... morede la Géographie Anciennes et Nouvelles. Sanson. A pioneer in the field of historical cartography, sought to present the region as it was constituted in the days of the Roman Republic and later Roman Empire which called for some extensive scholarship for a region rarely mapped in any detail. Besides utilising the works of classical historians for placenames and features in his depiction of the Roman road network or cursus publicus Sanson turned to the famous. The only surviving map from the Roman era, repurposing its linear depiction to"modern" geography. Mortier's engraving work arguably improves upon Sanson's original map and is certainly superior to another contemporary copy published by Mariette around the same time. This fascinating map is quite uncommon, and this well preserved example would make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The title cartouche describes the general region as the realm of who. Centered on the Holy land(Palestine/ Israel) Hall's map depicts the modern day countries of Turkey, Cyprus, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Towns, rivers, mountains and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and territorial boundaries are outlined in color. Hall prepared this map in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire, whose influence, though rapidly declining, still dominated much of the Middle East. Numerous important sites are named, including Mt. Ararat, the historic ruined Armenian capital of Ani, ... morethe ruined ancient Roman city of Palmyra, etc. Several indigenous tribes such as the Anase Bedouins, Serde Arabs, and Sark Arabs, among others, are identified. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ this type of border, it is possibly the earliest to use it on such a large scale. Both the choice to use steel plate engraving and the addition of the attractive keyboard boarder are evolutions of anti-forgery efforts. Copper plates, which were commonly used for printing bank notes in the early 19th century, proved largely unsuitable due to their overall fragility and the ease with which they could be duplicated. Both sides have indexes. Each map has at least one edge that is not 100% razor straight where it was taken out of the binding mounted in the atlas. The page has tiny perforations(see picture) along the binding edge where it was bound with cord. All pages are slightly yellowed from age but are bright and clear. Maps may have small dog-eared corners or tiny pieces of corners missing. See individual pictures. Every map has an atlas page number in one margin. This page is in extremely good condition! This is a very nice 1885 map of Asia. It measures 21 1/2 X 13 1/2 inches. Map is from a 1885 edition of a Cram's Atlas. See scans below. This map is in very good overall condition. But small handling flaws are to be expected on maps this large and old. This map has two very old tape as shown, won't show if matted, or trimmed. Please see upper scan for condition. All maps are shipped rolled carefully in kraft paper and inserted in a triple wall PVC tube so the post office cannot crush them. We take special care of these maps as we have no duplicates. Diaoyu, Tiaoyutai or Pinnacle Islands. Currently the islands, located in the East China Sea, are a source of international tensions between Japan, China and Taiwan, who each claim sovereignty. The islands have long been uninhabited and historically have been of little interested. The Japanese laid claim to the islands, along with numerous others, in 1895 and retained control until the end of World War II(1945) Following the war, the United States briefly administered them until, in accordance with the 1972 Okinawa Reversion Treaty, administration returned to thy Japanese. The potential oil and ... moregas reserves near the islands were identified in 1969. After the withdrawal of the United States, disputes rose between Japan, China, and Taiwan, all of who claimed ownership of the islands. Since the islands had no significant value until the recent oil discoveries, and were for the most part uninhabited for centuries, most claims are semantic at best and tied to conflicting ancient geographies and travelogues, which are themselves dubious. The islands were briefly inhabited in 1970's when a Japanese businessman established a bonito(fish) processing plant on the island which eventually failed. China claims that it discovered and controlled the islands from as early as the 16th century. Taiwan logic in claiming the islands follows China's. Due to their size, remoteness and lack of resources, and the fact that the islands are uninhabited, no maps of the region were printed by either China or Taiwan until very recently. The Map Publication Co. of China released limited copies(3000) of the first edition map of the Diaoyutai Islands in October 2012, all of which sold out immediately.
