1692 Muller Map- Asia Johann U. Muller was responsible for a world geography. Geographia totius orbis compendaria' containing some of the smallest maps ever printed. The 103 tiny maps were probably engraved by Gabriel C. Bodenehr and were published by Georg Kuhnen in Ulm, Germany in 1692. The map of Asia names the regions including Tartaria. Persia, Arabia, India, China, Cathai, Uzbek, Japan; major cities are noted including Samarkand, Goa, Canton, Pequin, Mecca, Astracan; the Great Wall is illustrated and there is detail to the topography. At the east edge of the map there is a very large erroneous Terre de Jesso across the Strait of Jesso. The map measures 2.5" by 3" on a full page of text. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' A 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. This map of the town of Ambon is from an early Dutch edition of L'Histoire. Ambon is the main population centre for the island of the same name in the Banda sea. Part of the Moluccas. The detail is superb, emphasizing its importance as a trading post in the lucrative Spice Trade. The fort guards the main harbour while ornamental gardens lie farther inland. This is an original page from 1894, not a reprint or copy. Because the page is double-sided, only one side can be displayed at once. However, there are no copyright restrictions on the maps so one of the sides could be copied if you'd like to display both. Condition: Good. Lots of dark aging around the margins, which just adds to the appeal of the old map. Small tear in the lower right corner that will barely be noticeable once the map is framed.
