Ayrouard was a pilot of the French royal gallery, the Reale, based ... morein Marseille. However, Ayrouard’s port plans are very different form Michelot’s earlier works. The much larger size and extensively shaded topography in this plan are distinctive characteristics of Ayrouard’s plan s. China& Eastern Russia with a very early view of the NW coast of America- one of the first maps to depict this region- by Gerard Mercator was published by Joducus Hondius in the 1623 Latin edition of Mercators Atlas. A beautifully ornate map in a style highly popular in the 16th and early 17th centuries. To the left of the map is the ... moreimage of a man of Central Asia and another of an Arctic Hunter. Possibly an Eskimo. The rest of the map is full of detail both real and myth, some of which is no doubt borrowed from the writings of Marco Polo considered at the time one of the foremost expert on China and Central Asia. Overlooked by some experts is the inclusion of the NW Coastline of America important as it would be 150 years before this region was thoroughly mapped by Capt. James Cook in the 1770's. An important map showing the Great Wall of China. Korea as an Island, a very early example of the the Northwest Coast of America, naming Cape de Fortuna and the Straits of Anian. Shown also is an incomplete Nova Zembla and a host of other details. Extends west to include the Black Sea and Russia, but the primary focus of the map is Tartaria, Central Asia and Asiatic Russia. Decorative vignettes in include a nomadic tribe, tents and livestock. An early map of the region and certainly one of the most decorative of the genre. This 1898 view of Beijing or Peking's Forbidden City is the original pen and ink cover art for the October 22. 1898 edition of Harper's Weekly, which is itself included with this piece. The view was drawn by Harry Fenn from, purportedly, the then'only photograph known to have been taken of the prohibited enclosure. The view is presented from a highpoint in the Imperial City(walled enclosure surrounding the Forbidden City) looking northwest into the Forbidden City towards Coal Hill, which appears in the distance and is the title of this view. Presumably this view is the first contemporaneous ... moreillustrated depiction of the Forbidden City to appear in any western publication since the Anglo-French occupation in 1860. This illustration, embellished with a profile bust of the progressive Guangxu(Kuang-hsu)Emperor graced the cover of the October 22, 1898 edition of Harper's Weekly. Harpers ran a short article on the Guangxu(Kuang-hsu) Emperor's'Hundred Days Reform' and the Dowager Empress Cixi's reactionary 1898 coup d'etat, which effectively ended the reform and placed the young emperor under a lifelong house arrest. The artist, Harry Fenn(1845-1911) was an English-born American illustrator and a proponent of the Hudson River School. Fenn was born in Surrey, England, and after a brief American tour, purportedly to visit Niagara Falls, he permanently relocated to the United States. Settling in Montclair, New Jersey,in 1865, Fenn commenced work as an engraver, completing various engravings for'Picturesque' books, including William Cullen Bryant's 1872 Picturesque America. Original, steel-engraved map of Pakistan, eastern Afghanistan(The Panjab with part of Afghanistan, Kashmeer, Sinde, etc. by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C.
