1785 Hogg Engraving- Views on the Coast of Asia Alexander Hogg was probably the most successful cartographic plagiarist of all time. He published a series of travel books in the late 1700's. Mostly based on the explorations of Capt. James Cook, and unashamedly used famous mapmakers to copy his charts and views. These views were originally taken by members of James Cooks third voyage during their visit to Kamchatka after C ook's death in Hawaii in February 1779. They were re-engraved for Anderson's edition of Captain Cooks Voyages and published by Hogg in 1785. The views show the coast of Siberia and Kamchatka. Hand written and hand colored in black ink and natural dyes on Jap anese washi paper are banchi or addresses and land plots. It measures 51 1/2" by 59 1/2. Some wear. Creases and fold lines. But no tears or holes. There is one minor split to a joint wh ere t w o pieces of paper were glued together. I think it could be easily repaired. Overall in good condition. The Dutch, allied with a local Sultan, eventually drove the English out Bantam and Java itself. By the end of the 18th century, when this map was made, the Bantam entrepot was little more than a name on a map- as seen here- while Batavia further east had risen, with a population of nearly one million, to dominate Java. In 1800, just six years after this map was published, the VOC was formally dissolved and the Dutch East Indies established in its place as a full-fledged national colonial venture. The British meanwhile established themselves in Bencoolen, on Sumatra, and later in Singapore and Malacca. The region took on additional significance early in 1794, just before this highly detailed map was issued. Though continually at odds, the Dutch and English, in January of 1794 temporarily set aside their differences to battle piracy in the Sunda Strait Campaign. The last being done in 1789 on the eve of the French Revolution. Begun by Prevost in 1746, the work was continued by others after his death 1763. One historian describes the work as: An important and scarce collection which includes accounts of all the Principal Early Australian voyages, as well as account of the discovery of Australia by the Dutch, early voyages to New Guinea and the Palau Islands, and Roggeveen’s ... morevoyage to Terres Australes, African voyages including the early Portuguese and English voyages to West Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, with a general account of the Dutch at the Cape. Pacific voyages include those of Magellan. Schouten and Le Maire, Drake, Sarmiento, Cavendish, Spilbergen, Narborough, Rogers Cowley, Frazier and Anson. Particularly full accounts are given of the Dutch and French voyages to the East Indies, voyages to China and the British East India Company’s voyages to India and Ceylon” This map is from Volume“VIII” and was done by Jacques Nicholas Bellin the Elder(1703-1772) who was. Among other things, the“French Royal Geographer” One of the more interesting maps in the series. This is actually a"birds-eye” view from the South looking slightly NE. Labeled are“1. Sables(Sandy beach) and 2. Havre(Port or, more correctly here an anchorage) The text goes on to note the location as“18 degres 30 Minute du Sud” The mountains in the background are steep and craggy with the tops in the clouds. At the lower levels are many palm trees and a couple of short streams. The appearance is of a fringing reef with a narrow opening into a nice bay
