Geographer and religious minister who is noted for one main atlas, A New Set of Maps both of Ancient and Present Geography' published in 1700. These maps are easily recognisable from their flourishing engraving style and titular dedications to William, Duke of Gloucester. Less well-known are a splendid set of miniature maps he designed in 1701 for the use of university students. An attractive general map of the country. Published in the quarto edition of Edward Stanford’s‘London Atlas of Universal Geography’ Printed on a single page the map measures approx 25cm x 32cm excluding borders. Very good condition. The printed area is clean and fresh with just the odd speck. Margins a little darkened at edges and some light handling soiling. Verso blank and very clean. In the 10 century the Persian navigator Buzurg ibn Shahriyar of Ramhormuz refers to them in his narrative Ajaib al-Hind( The wonders of India) Shahriyar describes the inhabitants of Great Andaman as fierce cannibals- a reputation they would maintain will into the late 19th century. Marco Polo also refers to the Andamans where, in one of his more whimsical and memorable passages, he describes the inhabitants as having heads like dogs. Though first mapped in some detail in the late 1780s by British naval commanders, the Andaman Islands remained in relatively obscurity well into the early 19th century. The British founded several minor colonies on the island including the penal colonies of Port Chatham and Port Cornwallis. Drawn by Daniel Lizars this map covers from the Mediterranean to the Sea of Kamchatka(top panel) and from the Red Sea to Japan(bottom panel) The map further extends north as far as the Arctic and south as far as Ceylon and Borneo. Stylistically this map follows the conventions established by Thomson. Pinkerton, and Cary at the turn of the 18th century, especially with regard to coloration, border design, typography, and topographic schemes. Cartographically, while ostensibly similar to earlier 19th century mappings of Asia, Lizars does incorporate ... morea number of advances most of which are derived from Russian surveys in Siberia and Central Asia, as well as nautical expeditions to the Russian Arctic, most specifically around New Siberia and the Liakhov islands. In India, evidence of British cartographic work of the late 18th century, particularly that of Rennell, is apparent. Persia, Arabia, and the Near East clearly benefit from Ottoman mapping efforts. Although the empire of the Great ... moreKhan had long since disintegrated into constituent states by the time this map was made, this little known and largely inaccessible region held a special fascination for western Europeans who were reared on legends of the dreaded Mongols or Tartars and their leader, the terrifying Scourge of God. Consequently, much of the geography of Central Asia represented here references these early conquests. Genghis Khan’s largly abondoned capital at Kara Koram is noted, as are the silk route trading centers of Samarkand, Bokara, and Kashgar(Cashgar) Further south, the better known regions of Arabia, Persia, India, Tibet, Southeast Asia, the East Indies, Japan and Korea are relatively well mapped. Between Japan and Korea the“Sea of Korea” or Sea of Japan is noted. Today scholars in both countries are arguing over this sea’s proper name, making it an issue of national pride, with each insisting it be named after their own country. Japan itself is only roughly mapped according to a very ancient convention orienting the main island on an east-west rather than north south axis. Description: This is a beautiful example of C. Bertholon's 1799 map of Asia. It covers the continent from the Red Sea(Mer Rouge) east as far as New Guinea. This map is most interesting in its rendering of the largely unexplored extreme northwest of Asia. The sea between Japan and Korea is here identified in favor of Korea. Historically. Korea has used the term'East Sea' since 59 B.C. and many books published before the Japanese annexed Korea make references to the'East Sea' or'Sea of Korea' Over time, neighboring and western countries have identified Korea's East Sea using various different terms. The St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences ... morereferred to the East Sea as'Koreiskoe Mope' or'Sea of Korea' in their 1745 map of Asia. Other seventeenth and 18th century Russian maps alternate between'Sea of Korea' and'Eastern Ocean' The 18th century Russian and French explorers Adam Johan von Krusenstern and La Perouse called it the'Sea of Japan' a term that became popular worldwide. Nonetheless, the last official map published by the Russians name the East Sea the'Sea of Korea' The name is currently still a matter of historical and political dispute between the countries. Just to the east of Yeco(Hokkaido or Yesso) Bertholon maps the apocryphal Terre de la Compagnie or Terre de Gama. Often called de Gamma Land or Gama, these islands were supposedly discovered in the 17th century by a mysterious figure known as Jean de Gama. Various subsequent navigators claim to have seen this land, but it was left to Bering to finally debunk the myth. In 1729, he sailed for three days looking for Juan de Gama land but never found it. Though it may be little more than a mis-mapping of Hokkaido or the Japanese Kuriles, Gama or Compagnie remained on maps for over 50 years following Bering's

The map covers the western extension of Southeast Asia from the city of Arakan(today the magnificent and almost impossible to access ruin of Mrauk-U) south along the coastline to the Irrawaddy River Delta, inland to Rangoon(Yangon, here identified as Dagon, for the awe inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda) and then south past the Gulf of Martaban(Mawlamyine) to the Kyan River and Tavay Point(formerly Victoria Point, currently Kawthaung, the Thailand-Myanmar border) The map offers rich detail including ... morecountless depth soundings, notes on the sea floor, commentary on reefs, rhumb lines, and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. The interior is predominantly blank and annotations on the map clearly refer to a general lack of information regarding the region. Nonetheless, the 1748 site of an English factory on the Persain River(Currently Pathein, Myanmar) is identified and various inland river routes are tenuously ghosted in. Four large inset maps fill the empty space. These include a plan of the Martaban River(modern Mawlamyine) and the sacred Buddhist shrine at Quekmay(Kyaiktiyo) the precariously balanced Golden Rock Pagoda. Another map illustrating the Arakan River entrance, though the map does not continue inland as far as the city of Arakan, today’s Mrauk-U. A third plan details the Sirian River, the modern Irrawaddy River, identifying the site of Rangoon(Yangon) as Dagon. A finally the fourth inset focuses on the entrance to the Perseen River, an important trade artery developed prior Rangoon and the site of an early British trading post at Pathein. Bencoolen(Bengkulu) was established as a pepper-trading center by the British East India Company in 1685. By the time this map was drawn Bencoolen ... morehas been renamed'Old Bencoolen' being superseded in 1714 by Fort Marlborough just to the south. The map offers considerable detail on the approaches to Bencoolen for which Rat Island(top right submap) is an important marker, as well as a staging post were vessels could dry anchor and dry nets. Poolo Bay(Pulau Bay) bottom right submap) some seven miles south of Fort Marlborough, was at the time an excellent harbor and anchorage. There our map identifies godowns or warehouses as well as lime kilns and a fresh water source. Laurie and Whittle prepared this chart for their 1799 issue of the East-India Pilot. Though most charts in the East-India Pilot were derived from earlier maps prepared for Jean-Baptiste d'Apres de Mannevillette’s 1745 Neptune Oriental, this particular chart is a new production unique to Laurie and Whittle. Description: This is a monumental and highly detailed map 1789 map of the Coromandel Coast. India by F. A. Schraembl. This map, on two separate sheets, covers the southeastern coast of India from Nagapattinam(Nega-Patnam) north as far as Narsapur and inland as far as Tiruchirappalli and Hyderabad. Schraembl derived this map from the influential French cartographer J. B. B. d'Anville's similar map of 1753, which here has been re-engraved, updated, and translated into German. It offers excellent coverage of the Coromandel Coast of India naming port cities, including Chennai(Madras) Nagappattinam(Negapatam) Puducherry(Pondicherry) Pazhaverkadu(Pulicat) etc. Several important rivers, towns, villages, ... moreroads and other topographical features are also noted throughout. Mountain ranges are rendered in profile. The Coromandel Coast, whose name is derived from the ancient Chola Dynasty that ruled the region from the 3rd Century BC to the 13th Century AD. The Portuguese settled in the region during the 16th century, followed by the British, the French and the Dutch during the 17th and 18 centuries, leading to rivalries among the European powers, that hoped to control Indian trade. Schraembl prepared this map in 1789 for inclusion in his monumental Allgemeiner grosser Atlas. Though many of the maps in this atlas are dated 1789 the atlas itself was not complete until 1800, when it was published in Vienna. A lavish production, the Allgemeiner grosser Atlas was expensive and proved difficult to sell, resulting in a low publican run and considerable scarcity relative to other European atlases of the period.
