This was in the early years of the industrial age when curves and scallops were incorporated into even the machines of the day. Rusted over when found. Its been power wire brushed to reveal the dark patina of the iron while leaving a nice balance of rust red. The entire piece was then clear matte coated. The bottom of each end of the stretcher has a notch that fits onto a slot on the bottom of the leg. The top of each end fits into a slot at the top of each leg. Then the table top/ work surface is placed onto the legs, sliding a tab on the underside into a slot on the top of each leg. Slipping a lock pin through these last two tabs locks the entire assembly in place. The height from floor to the work surface is 25" The top measures 22" x 15" Each leg is 20" front to back. This is a very unique full size bed with rounded edges and very nice rosette and scrollwork castings supporting the curved tubes and straight rods. The rails are marked IDEAL. The bed is pretty sturdy and the hitches fit nice and tight. All you see is what is included. There are no supportive slats. The bed measures roughly 54 inches wide and 80 inches long. The frame size is about 54x76 inches(mattress space) The headboard is about 6.4 inches tall and the footboard is about 40 inches tall. The paint is chipped all over which gives it a great look. But if it is going in a childs room, we would recommend sandblasting, priming and painting the entire bed. This would be a great preventative measure to guard ... moreagaint rust and further deterioration. There is some rust and wear. It is very old. We are offering this for preferred local pick up. Antique Cast Iron NYPD Bed
The ultimate item for the NYPD collector. This is an original antique NYPD bed. These beds were used from the turn of the century to the early 1940's in a few precincts that had dormitories for police officers to sleep between shifts. It is extremely heavy cast iron. There is a headboard. Footboard, and spring. The three pieces fit together and it is very sturdy. I bought this many years ago at a tag sale because I have 2 sons that are both police officers, but the wives do not want it. Great conversation piece.
