A Traveling Official, or a Businessman that required a durable ... moreportable desk. Closed it measured 15 in. by 10 in. and 6 in. high. When opened it had a 13 ½ in. 5 ¾ in. writing surface and with another flip of the top would become a 13 ½ in. by 13 ½ in. surface. Made with solid Mahogany using hand cut dovetailed joints, it has Brass Handles recessed into the sides. Overall condition is good with wood patches in the back and along the inside edge. At some time in the past the felt was replaced and the leather hinges on the interior compartments are torn with the felt now supporting the writing surface. The top has a tight age crack, the felt has a tiny hole, and the old finish shows marks, scuffs, and fine scratches. It is sturdy and ready for use. Please look at the photos and email any questions. This is a beautiful antique campaign lap desk in very nice condition. There is a repaired hinge(see pics) and the ink well top has stripped threads. The finish is in good shape with some scratches and small dings. The wood appears to be mahogany. It is complete with 2 storage compartment dividers. The pen case cover and one original ink well. In the 19th century. British deck officers kept the daily log and traveling civilians wrote letters on lap desks like these. Highest Quality Handmade Antique French Plique De Jeur Lap Desk Monogram CB
Up for sale is this wonderful treasure that comes from a private Conn estate. It was obviously made for someone of great importance when you see the high quality crafstmanship that was put into it and it is monogrammed on the top CB done in metal and mother of pearl. It is a large antique lap desk that weighs 30 lbs. The outer box is a painted black frame that is highly decorated with inlaid metal. Tortosie shell in 2 different colors and inserts of mother of pearl. The trim around the entire box is an ornate metal which is rarely seen. It has 4 round feet on the base and opens exposing the writing surface with 2 drawers which is a highly polished wood that is in mint condition. The originla key is included and in good working order. Antique Victorian 14 Inch Lap Desk
This auction contains an antique Victorian lap desk. I am not sure of the type of wood it is. But my best guess is that it is either mahogany or cherry wood. Overall, considering its age, it is in a beautiful condition, except that there has been one small repair on the upper left hand lid and there is a definitive hairline crack on the top front where they curved the wood to meet the flat top of the top. The inside appears to have the original purple felt and there are two original ink bottles in the front part. It measures approximately 14 x 9 x 6. Also note the mother of pearl on top and the two beautiful designs. Please take a close look at the pictures to determine if this is the condition you want. Buyer pays shipping and handling according to weight and state.

Antique mother of pearl inlaid lap desk as is birds eye maple Regency English?
An antique lap desk with a bird design using mother of pearl inlay measuring approximately 5" tall. 12-7/8" wide, and 9-1/8" deep. The wood looks like bird's eye maple and the inlay around the perimeter appears to be brass. We do not see a mark so we do not know the maker or the region of origin, but looks like an English Regency influenced piece to us. This item is for restoration, as both hinges need repair/replacement and there is loss to some of the inlay around the top edge. We also do not have the key. The inner surface has been replaced with green felt. There is some wear and tear/damage to the inside as well(please see photos) Otherwise normal wear and tear, a little scratching, no other major problems. Brass Bound Walnut Lap Desk Good Interior Secret Drawers Key Mid 19th Century. The box measures 13 3/4 inches wide by 9 1/4 inches deep by 6 1/2 inches high. It retains almost all of the original finish and the brass has a dark patina. The leather on the writing surface looks original. The lock is a very old replacement. It is broken but still has a working key. The key will come inside the desk. I believe the desk is built with blind dovetails because if it were not it wouldn't be holding together so well. The secret drawers are below the little compartments along the front of the desk. The mechanism to unlock the drawers stll works very well. You just lift up on the section between the little compartments and the board hiding the drawers pops out revealing two drawers. The lap desk is made of walnut and is the type that would have been used by a Civil War Officer while in the field. The desk is hinged. When opened fully it has a leather writing surface and a compartment area for writing instruments and supplies. The desk also has two storage compartments located under the writing surface panels. When closed the desk measures 13-3/4 inches in length. 8-1/2 inches wide and is 5 inches tall. When opened the desk measures 17 inches in length and has a 10-3/4 by 12 inch writing surface. The top interior section has two compartments for ink wells. A pen tip compartment and a covered ink pen compartment. This writing supply area also has a hidden compartment the is accessed by lifting one of the dividers up. The top has a crack where the wood has spread apart from age. This is common on the early lap desks due to the thin walnut panel that was used to make the top. Nice Civil War lap desk. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this beautiful antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood is most likely walnut and it has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment at the bottom of the case. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place(rod with it needs to have end taken off) My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. You be the judge before ... morebuying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners are seamed together. A slice of veneer alongside the secret drawer is missing. There are a number of veneer pieces that are loose and come with the case to be put back in to place. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The lock and latch are not with the case. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on one side that is pretty worn and is missing on the other side. The desk has two brass handles to carry it by on the sides that are still in place. Top of the case shows some splitting of the wood from drying out on the right side. Rest of case looks pretty good. There was a knot in the wood in the back where the knot fell out sometime after the case was made. Chip out of the wood on the front right side just before the brass support piece. There was probably an insert of bone or brass on top of case where a piece of wood is now set in that place. The brass corner and support pieces on this case are all in place. Antique Mahogany Lap Desk Velvet Interior Compartments Missing Lock
Up for auction is an antique lap desk recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It has no inkwells. It is missing covers and dividers to the compartments, we feel the velvet may not be the original, it has age but does not seem as old as the piece perhaps, The lock mechanism is missing. None the less a beautiful example of an antique lap desk worthy of a little repair with the pieces inside in photo 6. The exterior of the lock is there, but only the face, the locking mechanism was removed prior to auction. The monogram plate was never engraved but has some surface scratching, along with the whole piece, commensurate with age and use. There are some remnants of tape on the top, perhaps from auction or estate labeling. This piece measures 15" x 10 x 6" It appears to have been well used in its day, guessing ca ... more1850s, but the wood still retains a lovely lustre patina. It is made of Rosewood with Brass strapsand corners. It is in remarkable condition. There is a secret compartment where the vertical panel below the script pens and ink is released by lifting up the left hand divider where there is a spring clip under the wood. This piece is inscribed as being given to the owner by Levi L. Thaxter in 1923 and was owned and used by his father during the Civil War. The house of Levi Lincoln Thaxter House. Corner of Main and Cuba Streets. In 1882 it was moved to this site from where the Town Hall is located now. It was built circa 1815. Levi L. Thaxter was married to writer. Poetess, and artist, Celia Thaxter. He was Harvard educated, a lawyer, well known in the literary circles as a man of culture and refinement. Levi, always in search of a career, was best known for his readings of poetry by Robert Browning. The desk was given to Alexander Zographos and was then traded for renovation work to George Gustler of Surf City. NC. in the 1990's. We have done a cleaning on the piece and tried to save as much of the original vainer but some was un-salvageable. Designed to withstand military campaigns and travel. The box has drop down carrying handles on the two sides which are the early form of handle. There is a side drawer which pulls out when a brass pin is pulled out with the box in the open position. The top has two brass inserts designed to receive a reading stand which is not with the desk. The condition is excellent for the age. There are two cracks on the top as shown in pictures and the drawer has a separation also shown in pictures. This is a ca.1800 Georgian Mahogany Campaign Lap Desk. It has a full length dovetailed drawer with a brass locking rod. All of the brass hardware is original. The brass lock has a working key. It is 16"x 9.25"x 6"high and weighs 7 lbs. When open it is 19" long. There is a repaired hairline crack in the lid. The writing surface is dark green felt. Civil War Era Portable War or Lap Desk. Wood is stripe grained mahogany veneer. The gilded handles on each side were added later. Probably 1870-80. The dimensions of the desk are 22.5" length X 12" wide X 8" high. It weighs 15 1/2 pounds before packing. The interior is in fairly good condition, it has a few nicks and dings but no major defects other than a knothole that goes through on the bottom. It has several removable compartment covers and the fabric which covers the flipping compartment covers has split into two sections. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this beautiful antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood is most likely walnut and it has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret spring loaded door compartment underneath where the ink and pens would be stored. It can be opened by opening the case and then undoing the latch. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners are rounded ... moreand seamed together. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The lock is with the case, but not the key for it. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on one side that is pretty worn and is missing on the other side. Top of the case has a split in it on the right side that runds for about 5 inches. Probably from the case being drop at some point in its' life. Rest of case looks pretty good. There is a great looking brass insert on the top of case. The brass corner and support pieces on this case are all in place. They add a lot of elegance and character to the piece. The secret spring loaded compartment area has the spring board come off when the latch is released on one of the top drawers and then the 3 pull knob drawers are accessible. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. The bottom of the lap desk has felt that is coming off. Made with choice grade mahogany with a quality of graining in the wood that is basically non-existent in todays world. Take a close look at the photos this is one lovely little lap desk. As you can see the original glass ink well with the pewter lid is marked Patented Feb. 4 1862. ANTIQUE WRITING DESK– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale in Virginia is this antique wood folding lap writing desk. Unknown type of wood- does have a cedar smell on the inside. Inside in many areas written in pencil is dated information from the 1800’s. Some of the writing with signatures is faded and difficult to read. Some the years can be read are“June 1894” 465 letters” March 15& 16 1895” March( 17, 1877” and“July( 18, 1875” There is no structural damage to the box. There are no apparent breaks or repairs. Hinges are securely in place. Closed the desk measures 3 ¾ inches tall. 11 ¼ inches long and 7 ¾ inches wide. Open the desk measures 15-3/4 inches long. 11-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/2 inches tall(slopes up) Writing area has ink stains and is loose in one area– see photos. Glass inkwell without cap ... moreis included. Two pencils are also included. When the desk is closed the top has some marks/stains– I have not tried to clean these marks/stains. Key is included; unknown if this is the actual or original key. The key does work but at times it is difficult to unlock– I would not recommend locking the desk. nice estate find a 1800s lap desk crazy with mother of pearl inlay on the top this thing has been around for a long time i think the wood might be ebony i am not sure it has some damage to the coners so look at the pics good it show wear all over but is a neat old part of history the velvet show wear inside and has crackling of the black paint all over has a little ink bottle in it also could you think about pulling this out to use instead of your hp laptop who know what they will be useing 150 years from now its 15 1/2 inches by 12 inches by 4 3/4 inches. Antique Portable Travel Writing Lap Desk with bun feet. This piece was purchased at an estate sale in the Washington DC area. Desk measures approx. 17" long x 9 deep x 14" tall. There are several compartments and drawers. The drawers are all hand dovetailed. Front and back sides. There are the 2 hidden compartments that come out, but look as though they are stationery columns. My guess is that the brass hardware is original. The finish may not be original. The wood may be walnut, not sure though. There are some nicks, surface scratches and signs of aging, all of which I consider age appropriate wear. A little bit of veneer damage, some stress cracks(some are natural in the wood) and inside has some slight warping. There is no key. I love this piece but have nowhere to display it in my home. It shows some age and was used. It dates ca. 1860. It has a purple velvet lining that is ORIGINAL. It has two ink well compartments a pen compartment and two large paper compartments. I did not find the secret compartment with the gold coins hidden yet. Maybe you can find it? This is an American made desk not English. It has two ink bottles that are very old. They do not match each other but they look like period pieces. The key for the brass lock was lost long ago. The ONLY replacement part is the handle for the cover of the pen compartment. 1800's Primitive Wood Ship Captains WRITING LAP DESK for restoration or parts
Offered for sale is this early to mid 1800's wood lap writing desk for restoration in poor overall condition. It has a real primitive look to it and would be a great piece if restored. I purchased it at a Maritime Nautical auction in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The desk does have much wear and tear. And is missing some of its hardware. The lock and handles are missing and there is a loose board that needs to be re-glued under the small compartments. There is wear on the felt surface and the edges of the wood. It is a little unusual in the sense that it has a"lift top" panel that comes off as the pictures show. The box measures about 17" long by 10 1/2" deep by 7" tall. The desk has a great old antique look to it and could be a really fine looking desk with a little work.
