Condition: Used Location: Downingtown, United States This is a beautifully handcrafted Antique English Writing Slope or Travel Desk. It measures 16" by 9" by 4 1/2" The exotic wood veneer(possibly ... moremahogany) has a very dramatic and variable grain that ranges from amber to black. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not appear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. Nibs, wax, stamps etc. There is also a removable concave pen tray with storage space beneath it. The green velvet-covered'top partition' pulls down with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. The storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 7 1/4" For stationary. The green velvet-covered'bottom partition' pulls open with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. This storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 5" For letters. The hinges and fittings are brass and there is a flush brass handle on each end of the box. There is a small chip in the veneer on the left front corner(photo#3) There is a 1/2" segment of the pewter'stringing line' that is missing in the same area. There are some cracks in the veneer on the top. The left side of the top and the front. There are cracks in the interior linings of the box. Made with solid Mahogany using hand cut dovetailed joints, it has Brass Handles recessed into the sides. Overall condition is good with wood patches in the back and along the inside edge. At some time in the past the felt was replaced and the leather hinges on the interior compartments are torn with the felt now supporting the writing surface. The top has a tight age crack, the felt has a tiny hole, and the old finish shows marks, scuffs, and fine scratches. It is sturdy and ready for use. Please look at the photos and email any questions. So there are stress fractures all shown in the photos. This French foot chest is also very practical for daily use being 43 1/4" high and 40" wide by 20" deep.
