Designed to withstand military campaigns and travel. The box has drop down carrying handles on the two sides which are the early form of handle. There is a side drawer which pulls out when a brass pin is pulled out with the box in the open position. The top has two brass inserts designed to receive a reading stand which is not with the desk. The condition is excellent for the age. There are two cracks on the top as shown in pictures and the drawer has a separation also shown in pictures. Both side drawer and hidden compartment drawer utilize dovetailing consistent with age The key reads Corbin Cabinet Lock Company New Britain Conn. Which may ... moreor may not be original. The key works the locking mechanism but wear prevents the lock mechanism engaging as it sits too low. This box is very similar to that which was owned and used by Jane Austen and is now in the British Library. Gorgeous Ornate Oak and Pine Mechanical. Architects Desk with removable legs for transporting. Drawers are all interlocking. Key is missing but lock intact and unlocked. Top is constructed with Pine and drawn together with steel screws to retain a tight top. Top lifts and hinges for storage underneath and also slants for drawing comfort. Circu 1820's by what I could find in my research. Its finish, internally and externally is excellent. sometimes refered to as"Ship's Captain's" desks. Davenports had a compact design that took up very little space. Reputed to have gotten their name from the inventor. Captain John Davenport, back in the days of Clipper Ships trading to the Far East. This Davenport Desk is a beautiful example of old world workmanship enhanced with inlaid designs. The top of the desk is tan leather with an embossed design running along the perimeter. The Desktop slides forward for a better writing position. And had a hinged lift top with inside storage and 1 usable drawers. The inkwell ... moredoor on the desktop does not latch. But is still in great shape. The Drawers on the Left are fake. Allowing for the deep right side lockable drawers. The Fliptop desktop and sidedrawers are lockable. And the unit comes with 2 keys(Pictured) Antique item in excellent but not perfect condition. A few trim pieces are loose or missing, and there are some marks and chips in the rosewood venner. The desk belonged to my Great Great Grandfather George Washington Verrill, he was a Captain in the Civil War for the 17th of Maine and fought in all the major battles including Gettysburg where he was wounded from a gun shot to his leg. It has several compartments of different sizes. One drawer, a small compartment with a lift off lid, a large packet with a snap closure attached to the inside of the front panel door, and another packet of bound stationery that you can slide out. Please see photograph#12. The pull out tab on this packet is torn. If you look at the inside of the lid. You will see three sheaths, two of which are holding a pen and a bakelite letter opener. the middle sheath is torn in half, and so, cannot be used. The pen was in the box when ... moreI bought it and is, of course, not original to the box. The letter opener was also in the box and may be original to the box. I am selling this piece with all the items that were in it when I purchased it. The brass hardware is all original. But I do not have the key for the lock. Since there is no key to lock the box, it cannot be carried by the handle on top without opening and spilling the contents. The hinge on the bottom right of the front panel is loose. But I will leave that to the new owner to tighten the screws which are all there. The overall width including the molding lip on the bottom measures 11 1/2" and without the lip it is 11" wide. The depth is 7 1/4" and the heighth measures 8 1/2" The patina and the figure in the wood of the quartered white oak is just beautiful with barely a flaw. I've had this box displayed on my desk for a few years. But before me, someone took very good care to keep the outside of the box immaculate, but judging by the wear on the inside, it is obvious that it was well used and handled often although there are very few scratches on the wood inside. About the item: Fine quality antique large 19th century oak partners desk. C1880.It is a great size and proportion and is a very decorative and functional piece of furniture. The desk is intricately carved in the Gothic/Green man style with lion masks and scrolling foliage etc. It stands on lovely bobbin turned supports,has 3 single and one double drawer and a leather top which is edged with nice scrolled carving. It has great colour/patina and has aged beautifully with only minor surface wear/marks. There is slight'gapping' around the edge of the leather top and the locks are missing,but this is minor and it is in great original condition and very much as you would expect from something that is 150 years old. 19th CENTURY ANTIQUE LEATHER TOPPED AMERICAN PLANTATION DESK
This is a breath taking piece of late 19th century American furniture. I purchased it from the Kentucky antique mall in 1998 and have taken excellent care of it. It was hand built as there are no maker's tags or stamps. Upon viewing these photos. A local antiquarian assessed that it was crafted in or close to Kentucky and primarily from mahogany. The doors open to an array of symmetrical cubbies and the writing surface is blanketed with magnificent black leather. The only item missing is the locking mechanism for the doors, but they close and remain so flush and seamlessly. There is very little wear and tear for a piece which is well over 100 years old.` There is truly nothing like it in the world(obviously considering the absence of mass production technology) nor have I seen one similar. The amount of skill, meticulousness and artfulness ... morepossessed by its builder surpasses all evidence of its timeless visual splendor and remains a pleasure sitting down to engage it in any purpose. Having just been restored by my very experienced restorer(50 years) it is consequently in excellent condition and is ready for immediate use in the home or for retailing in a prestigious showroom or fair. The second thing that strikes you about this desk is the colour and patination. The cabinetmaker that made this desk chose some very good quality timbers for the job. This has resulted all these years later in a desk with a gorgeous soft rich warm colour and patination that can only be attained by oak of this age and quality. Thirdly are the proportions. The design of this desk is just right and the desk benefits from having a good balance. Meaning that it“sits” well with a real“presence” Now we know everything on ebay is“fantastic” glorious” superb” brilliant” magnificent” greatest” resplendent” superior” etc etc but when we say this is a very good desk we mean it.
