Thai or Southeast Asian, c. 1800(or earlier) The sculpture is tall, measuring 14" overall. 4.25" wide, and 3.5" deep. It has traces of its original gilt, but much has flaked off over the years. There is a red clay-like residue in the upper portions of the triple stepped base. The sculpture was cast in two parts, with a base piece and the two feet, which is attached to an upper portion with the legs and the rest of the body. There are two pins are holding the two parts together at the legs, and there is a stable crack just above one of the figures ankles. I do this to place modestly priced objects of excellent value as well as to occasionally meet a new collector. The objects offered are from items I have either been consigned over the past year or items I have had over the past 10-20 years simply in storage. As some of you may remember or be aware I have well over 20 years of experience as a specialist in early Southeast Asian forms. I am presenting these pieces after having carefully examined them over a substantial period of time and am 100% confident in the dating I will give to each piece. This piece comes from the lower area of Thailand or northern area of present day Indonesia known in ancient times as the Srivijaya Kingdom and dating to the late 11th to 12th centuries. Lord Buddha stands on a round two tiered double lotus leaf pedestal with one hand in a modified vitarka mudra and the other holding the terminus of robe sash. Showing finely cast hair curls and a central third eye in his forehead the Buddha has connecting eyebrows. Prominent nose, downcast eyes, and a small mouth. He has the typical three rings of beauty and spiritual enlightenment around his neck and long nicely detailed ears. Wearing an open robe the garment adheres closely to his figure with one shoulder bare the robe drops to nicely articulated frontal detailing. This posture represents“Preventing Calamities” which is also known as“Pacifying the Relatives. History: Ayutthaya BUDDHA Ayutthaya images were created between the tenth and eighteenth centuries. They had a unique hair frame and tell-tale narrow carvings above the lips and eyes. Early Ayutthaya images were carved in stone with heavy influence from the Lopburi images. Middle Ayutthaya images were similar to the Sukhothai images. And were in similar poses. During this period, the images were often cast in Bronze, and the size of the images were often large.
