Khmer Sandstone Head of Lokeshvara Bayon Style, late 12th - early 13th Century
0 0 1 624 3559 Colorado School of Mines 29 8 4175 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Khmer Sandstone Head of Lokeshvara Bayon Style. Late 12 th- early 13 th Century Approximate Dimensions: height including base 15.75" 39.4 cm) Height without base 12.6" 32 cm) width 6.75" 17 cm) depth 6.75" 17 cm) In approximately 1219 Jayavarman VII's reign came to an end and Indravarman II ascended the throne of the Khmer empire. As the new ruler he reintroduced Shivaism. Spawning a period of intolerance that was unique to the Khmer civilization. Nearly all Buddhist images and statuary were destroyed making such fine examples as this head of Lokeshvara rare. Condition: Very good. Originally this head was part of a larger sculpture but it was separated in ancient times. The lower tip of the left ear is missing and at the ... morelower tip of the right ear a small chip is missing. The surface shows age, wear from the elements and deposits from burial. Description: An extremely fine sandstone head. In Bayon style, of Lokeshvara, Lord of the World" also known as Avalokiteshvara. Very idealized, it may have been a portrait of King Jayavarman VII(1181-ca. 1219) rather than a divine image. The lines of his slightly inclined and motionless face are firm, and each of the features is strongly personalized. The meditative"Bayon smile" that so masterfully plays on his lips conveys great tenderness and brings a sense of light and life to the sculpture. The lowered eyelids curve naturalistically. And the incised pupils gaze down between the half opened eyelids. The realistically rendered eyebrows flow naturally into his forehead. The contour of his mouth is well defined and the delicately curved lips seem to be flesh and blood. The powerful forehead leads naturally into his finely plaited hair, which is swept up in an elaborate mass of small triangular curls. The base of his chignon is decorated with an image of Amitabha, Lokeshvara's spiritual father, shown seated in meditation. Additional info

THAI/KHMER SANDSTONE BAYON HEAD OF A DEITY-13TH C- NR
Here is another offering for my appearance on ebay during which I will be making available a limited number of objects that I feel are appropriate for the ebay market. I do this to place modestly priced objects of excellent value as well as to occasionally meet a new collector. The objects offered are from items I have either been consigned over the past year or items I have had over the past 10-20 years simply in storage. As some of you may remember or be aware I have well over 20 years of experience as a specialist in early Southeast Asian forms. I am presenting these pieces after having carefully examined them over a substantial period of time and am 100% confident in the dating I will give to each piece. Most of these pieces were acquired n the 1970- 1980s and the pieces range in age from 650-1000+ years old. Some of these pieces are ... moresmall which will be auctioned off at set reserves. There are also some wonderful larger pieces that will be sold at excellent values. In this lot we have a Thai/ Khmer soft sandstone head of a deity measuring 9 INCHES TALL AND INCLUDING THE METAL MUSEUM MOUNT 12 INCHES IN HEIGHT. This is a Bayon 13th century form with a typical pointed upper jatamuka detailed with arched shapes above a Bayon type of face.Connecting raised eyebrows converge at the central point above the downcast linear eyes which lead to a broad Khmer shaped nose above broad lips. PLEASE NOTE the tip of the nose has been repaired) The piece has long ears with typical tripart inner ear shapes. There are the remains of the three rings normally seen on the neck. This is a soft grey/buff colored sandstone that has an orange/rust oxide burial patina from its internment. It has significant surface wear.Deep consolidation of earth particles in the surface of the stone and in my view is very typical in iconography and wear from this period. Please note the piece is being offered with a modest opening bid and NO RESERVE. Occasionally I select an item to present in this manner. After decades of studying this material

Angkor Wat'Bayon' Style. 13th Century. Description: A superb 13th century hand-carved sandstone female figure of the divine goddess'Uma' stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional Bayon style. From the Khmer Angkorian Period. The deity is intricately modelled from a solid block of stone. Once depicted stands in'Samabhanga' with her feet firmly planted on a small plinth, wearing a long stylized sampot. She is gracefully poised, her figure is sensuous, with a well defined nake upper body. Her youthful face is characterized by a serene downcast expression, almond-shaped open-eyes, connected arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, ... morewell-shaped mouth with insipid smile, and elongated earlobes accented by Khmer style triangular-shaped earring pendants. The head is covered by a conical hat enclosed by an interconnected diadem tied in a knot at the back, with vertical striated braided hair woven down to the nap of the neck. She is further adorned by an intricately carved jeweled necklace, and armlets, both decorated with central rosettes. XXX The figure is classified as Bayon style Angkorian art. Presented in its unaltered condition, elegantly modelled with detailing of the features clearly visible, and with no evidence of recarving of the features. The relatively smooth(yet somewhat grainy) surface shows even wear on the entire piece, with weathering consistent with age. The patina is superb, penetrating the surface of the stone in wonderful mottled variations of hues and colours, from extensive exposure to the natural elements, and the environmental conditions in which it was maintained. This skillfully executed image of Uma. Is a superb example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of the divine iconic goddess in human form, with lively imaginat
