I'm uncertain as to what the metal is.the look is a bronze and I can see a lighter golden color underneath. There are also scattered white spots here and there of unknown origin. The statue is in very good condition. The only damage I can see is where the drape of material between the legs is loose at the bottom where it may have been attached to the leg. Nothing serious. No dents or other damage other than some scattered rub wear and light scratch. Antique Khmer Empire Cambodian Bronze Buddha Statue 12th C. 1100s
This is a stunning bronze Buddha statue that dates from the 12th century. During the Khmer Empire. It is shocking to think that this piece is from the 1100s. It is 3.75" tall(9.5cm) and 2 3/8" wide(6.03cm) The piece has white residue coated on it because it was stored in the walls of a house for good fortune. Eventually, it was removed and sold to tourists. Inside the base was once a prayer scroll or jewel as an offering to bring good fortune, but the bottom has been opened and the contents lost to time. Other than general wear from handling and age, the piece is in acceptable condition and would make an ideal addition to a collection. Feel free to message me with questions. Cambodian Antiquity Small Bronze Head Broken from Statue
This is a very old small bronze Cambodian-style head that was broken from a statue. Probably a weak part of the casting. It has a very serene aspect and it's too bad that the left ear has been broken off. You can see in pic 7 that someone tried to glue it back on to the body or to something else. Beautiful texture and patina-hasn't been messed with. The head is 2-3/4" high, 1-1/2" wide, 1-5/8" deep, and weighs 6-1/2 ounces. This was acquired years ago at an estate sale in the Bay Area. Antique Bronze Buddha Head Sculpture Fragment c. 14th-16th century This wonderful antiquity will bring an aura of peace and tranquility to your home. This Buddha is most likely from Cambodia and hails from the 14th-16th century. Our local antiquarian who is also a customer stopped by the shop the other day to have a look and was nice enough to verify the age and authenticity of this piece for us. BUDDHA: Antique Cambodian/Khmer Head. Gilded Bronze. Late 1800's This is a very handsome head of the Lord Buddha cast by the lost wax process in Cambodia sometime in the late 1800's. Judging from the jagged edge at the neck. This head was probably removed from a larger, probably standing, figure. Although made at a much later time. This figure reflects the traditions of the art made during the height of the Khmer hegemony from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries in that part of Southeast Asia we now call Cambodia. More specifically it recalls the art made under Jayavarman VII in the 15th century. Although a devout Buddhist himself. Jayavarman was known and revered for his kindness and compassion, building many hospitals and orphanages. He was also tolerant of other religions as evidenced by the combination of Buddhist and Hindu elements ... moreand symbols in the art of his time. Sculpture in the Bayon style(named for the main temple in Angkor) is marked by two seemingly opposed characteristics. Figures of the Lord Buddha are often shown wearing ornamented crowns or diadems similar to those worn by the Hindu deity,Vishnu, and adorned with ornate necklaces and belts. The intention was to portray the Buddha as a powerful universal monarch in keeping with contemporary images of Hindu gods. But there is also an intense spirituality in the expression of the figures which reflects the humility and compassion usually associated with Buddhism. Our figure of the Lord Buddha is not as heavily laden with royal accouterments as many Bayon style figures are. He does wear an elaborate diadem and heavy ear rings. This head is 6 1/2 inches tall and has no serious damage. There are two very small voids in the diadem visible only from inside. Which I take to be casting flaws. The face is gilded and the diadem has slight traces of color. The photos give a very good idea of this handsome head in the Bayon style from Cambodia. If you should have any questions at all. Late 1800's This is a very interesting and handsome head of the Lord Buddha cast by the lost wax process in Cambodia sometime in the late 1800's. Judging from the jagged edge at the neck. This head was probably removed from a larger figure. Although made at a much later time. This figure reflects the traditions of the art made during the height of the Khmer hegemony from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries in that part of Southeast Asia we now call Cambodia. More specifically it recalls the art made under Jayavarman VII in the 15th century. Although a devout Buddhist himself. Jayavarman was known and revered for his kindness and compassion, building many hospitals and orphanages. He was also tolerant of other religions as evidenced by the combination of Buddhist and ... moreHindu elements and symbols in the art of his time. Sculpture in the Bayon style(named for the main temple in Angkor) is marked by two seemingly opposed characteristics. Figures of the Lord Buddha are often shown wearing ornamented crowns or diadems similar to those worn by the Hindu deity, Vishnu, and adorned with ornate necklaces and belts. The intention was to portray the Buddha as a powerful universal monarch in keeping with contemporary images of Hindu gods. Nicely cast, the statue depicting Uma, consort of Shiva, the goddess standing straight with arms extended forward, her left hand holding the stem of a fragmented plant, her right hand in a mudra. She is adorned by an elaborate floral diadem, wide collar necklace, armbands and belt with floral rosettes; her ears weighted down by heavy ear ornaments. Her torso is exposed while a long, pleated sarong covers her lower body, the skirt falling in two layers between her legs and tapering off in a curving fishtail shape.
