A woman of Samarai descent. They traveled throughout the area collecting art from the late 19th& early 20th centuries. They brought their collection to the States in 1954. Since then, the artifacts have been displayed or stored in their home. This buddha statue is believed to be from Thailand. Dating from the late 1800's. He holds both hands forward in a mudra that we could not find on the internet. The type of wood is not identified. It shows adz marks that indicate hand carving. Buddha is depicted standing with both hands forming the Varada mudra, with the right hand holding a Myrobalan fruit of medicinal properties, and left hand gently grasping his robe. He wears an elaborately embroidered flowing robe, typical of Mandalay Buddhas, covering both shoulders, and cascades in an extensive series of shallow pleats at the garments bottom hem. The end flap drapes over the shoulder to his mid section, in layers of compound plates, followed by an elaborate central panel. xxx His ... moreoval face is serene and poise. With downcast eyes of ceramic inlay, an aquiline nose, small bow-shaped smiling mouth and a pointed chin. According to his great grand son, he told us that this statue he bought from the antique dealer in London, England while he visited over there in 1935. Very old carving in Sukhothai Style. Original, believed to be from the 13th century or older.This is mostly carved from wood. The top of the head is another material with each small bump inserted separately. Some of the material and bumps have come off. Some of the outer layer has worn away. I don't see any flaws that I can say are from anything else besides age and exposure to natural elements. Look at the pictures, zoom and ask for more pictures, if desired, to assess. Size is 24-1/4 inches tall overall, by 10-1/2 inches between widest points of carving. The depth at chest area is at 3-3/4 inches. The bottom stand is 5-1/4 inches wide by 5 inches deep by 1-1/4 inches high. Weight is 5 pounds.

I don't see any flaws that I can say are from anything else besides age and exposure to natural elements. I thought one finger might be chipped but looking closer. I think it was carved that way. Look at the pictures, zoom and ask for more pictures, if desired, to assess. Size is 40.5 inches tall by 17 inches between widest points of carving. The depth(front to back) is estimated at 9-10 inches, although any one point is less, the way the carving is done makes it have a larger depth when taking all of it into account. Weight is approximately 21 pounds. I am going to list this with"local pickup only" because I would rather wait until it sells and have the buyer pick the type of packing and shipping.
