On offer is a beautiful'Shakyamuti' standing Buddha figure from Southeast Asia(most likelyCambodia or Thailand. I have a daughter who lives and works in Southern Thailand and in her travels throughout Asia has sourced many wonderful antique items for me but this particular artifact was actually originally acquired at auction in. I have a very large collection of Buddha figures and am slowly- and reluctantly I might add- starting to downsize. Cast bronze. This fine figure stands 20.5" 52 cm upright on a double lotus base. It weighs in at almost 11 lbs! Feet are slightly apart and he is dressed in a clinging'uttarasangha' which covers both shoulders. Right hand is held upright with the palm facing outwards in a gesture known as'abhayamudra' a gesture of fearlessness. Reassurance and safety, believed to accord divine ... moreprotection and bliss to the devotee. Also known by some as the'Gesture of Renunciation' Figures displaying this gesture are frequently placed in the main entrance to a home. The borders of the elegant skirt are exquisitely worked and he appears to be wearing an ornamental belt. The head and conical'ushnisa' are covered with diminishing rows of tight curls and the elongated earlobes speak to the weight of heavy jewellery. Befitting a prince.
