Thank you, Chasboo1944 ANTIQUE BURMESE BRONZE SEATED"MANDALAY" BUDDHA SCULPTURE STATUE You are being offered an Antique Burmese Bronze Sculpture of A Mandalay Style Buddha with a Youthful Image and wearing Long Flowing Robes while seated in Dhyanasana. With his Left Hand in Dhyana Mudra and his Right Hand is in Bhumisparsa Mudra. The Sculpture/Statue is Not Signed and it doesn’t have any Identifying Marks, but we are fairly certain it was cast in Burma during the Mandalay Period(1853-1948) and most likely prior to 1930. The Buddha, which is seated on a Triangular Pedestal, stands almost 9¾ inches high and measures 8¼ inches wide and 5¼ inches deep. There is a Thin Metal Rod attached to the Inside of the Statue’s Head that extends down almost to its Bottom. It originally extended down further where it was attached to a Display Stand and you can see where it was clipped with Wire Cutters. Otherwise, the Sculpture is in Very Good to Excellent Condition without any dents, cracks, splits or other form of damage and the Bronze has developed an Excellent Darkened Patina. Very finely made. The details are very clear and this statue is in beautiful condition. The Enlightened one depicted cross-legged. In the half lotus position. His upturned left hand resting on his crossed lower limbs. His right hand rests over his right knee. In a pose known as'Varada Mudra' a compassionate and caring gesture. He is depicted wearing loose-fitting robe. His hair tightly curled with flame shaped finial, usnisha and crown. The Buddha's face is sensitively carved with serene expression. The heartshaped eye-line and flame shaped finial show that this is a Sukhothai style statue. It may actually be earlier. but we prefer to be conservative in estimations. It measures 16 inches tall by about 11 inches wide by 7 inches in depth. It is in very good condition with areas of green patination and overall oxidation in various shades of pale to rusty brown. It has a few areas of casting loss. Particularly on one end of the base(see the photo close ups) It also has a few areas where the bronze has either thinned out or pitted(again, primarily on the reverse of the base, The history of Thai sculpture dates from sometime during the thirteenth century. Soles of feet are facing upward and visible. It is believed that the body is receptive to energy entering through the top of the head and through the open palms when in this position. We did a Google search due to our very limited knowledge of this type of item and found an almost identical piece sold at Sothebys. Who described it as being from Thailand. It has a geenish blue patina and is in excellent condition yet we do see a small imperfection on the thumb of the left hand. It looks like a casting flaw however we will leave that up to you to determine. We are unsure of the type of metal yet it looks to be a very old casting.
