He sits atop the body of the serpent. The five heads of the serpent rise up on the left of the Buddha. The Buddha's decision to renounce worldly possessions is represented here by the elongated earlobes. This is a reflection of Prince Siddhartha Gautama's life of luxury. This is a stunning bronze Buddha statue that dates from the 12th century. During the Khmer Empire. It is shocking to think that this piece is from the 1100s. It is 3.75" tall(9.5cm) and 2 3/8" wide(6.03cm) The piece has white residue coated on it because it was stored in the walls of a house for good fortune. Eventually, it was removed and sold to tourists. Inside the base was once a prayer scroll or jewel as an offering to bring good fortune, but the bottom has been opened and the contents lost to time. Antique Khmer Buddha protected by Naga hand forged bronze urn/jar. According to the receipt from the antiques dealer this piece was purchased from(Bangkok. Thailand 1971) this urn/jar is from the Rattanakosin Period 1850-1867. The description says this piece used to contain holy water. I'm no expert, but this urn/jar looks really old. The metal is hand forged. The top of the jar and the bottom of the lid are very irregular/uneven. There is a wonderful time worn patina to it. There is also a great deal of detail in the figures and symbols on the jar. The part about the piece holding holy water may be true as the interior of the urn/jar and the lid are lined with wax. As some of you may remember I have well over 20 years of experience as a specialist in early Southeast Asian forms as well as being recognized name in the Art world for over 40 years. I am presenting these pieces after having carefully examined them over a substantial period of time and am 100% confident in the dating I will give to each piece. Most of this collection was acquired n the 1970- 1980s and the pieces range in age from 650-1000+ years old. Some of these pieces are small which will be auctioned off at set reserves. This piece were offered at IM Chait in a Los Angeles auction as can be seen on the photos attached earlier this year with an estimate at 2.000-3000$.See the photo of the catalog listing This figure shows a late 13 th century Thai-Khmer Lopburi style also identified as a Khmer Bayon period Prajnaparamita who is regarded as the spiritual mother of all Buddhas. She stands in frontal posture on a square base and measures 9 3/4inches tall. On the very front of the upper chignon we see the ancient OMM symbol which symbolizes her exalted spiritual status She shows an elaborate diadem with upper arch elements, long ears and an extremely detailed necklace. Below the diadem she is delineated by a band framing her face. The front of the dhoti is very elaborate and well cast with deep relief hanging pendants and on the verso accented by a central medallion. All of the detailing is classic Bayon Khmer design. Please note the upper arms.Front hands and legs each have banded decoration. The figure has four arms with each arm holding a book.Rosary lotus, leaf and flask. Judging from the jagged edge at the neck. This head was probably removed from a larger, probably standing, figure. Although made at a much later time. This figure reflects the traditions of the art made during the height of the Khmer hegemony from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries in that part of Southeast Asia we now call Cambodia. More specifically it recalls the art made under Jayavarman VII in the 15th century. Although a devout Buddhist himself. Jayavarman was known and revered for his kindness and compassion, building many hospitals and orphanages. He was also tolerant of other religions as evidenced by the combination of Buddhist and Hindu elements ... moreand symbols in the art of his time. Sculpture in the Bayon style(named for the main temple in Angkor) is marked by two seemingly opposed characteristics. Figures of the Lord Buddha are often shown wearing ornamented crowns or diadems similar to those worn by the Hindu deity,Vishnu, and adorned with ornate necklaces and belts. The intention was to portray the Buddha as a powerful universal monarch in keeping with contemporary images of Hindu gods. This head was probably removed from a larger figure. Although made at a much later time. This figure reflects the traditions of the art made during the height of the Khmer hegemony from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries in that part of Southeast Asia we now call Cambodia. More specifically it recalls the art made under Jayavarman VII in the 15th century. Although a devout Buddhist himself. Jayavarman was known and revered for his kindness and compassion, building many hospitals and orphanages. From a private irish collection This is a guaranteed original approximately 300 year old bronze figure. This is an authentic cast bronze figure almost certainly Khmer or Thai(due to the head dress and garments) and probably representing an Aspara or a Kinnara. It has a deep almost black patina and could be older than the 18th century which I have given. I purchased and beleived it to be Shiva or Krishna with the snake Kaliya and from India. It is very heavy for it's size 6 inches tall. Any body with more info on this I would be delighted to know more.
