The culmination of highly advanced technical skills and ingenious artistic abilities. The vertical plane of the relief is expressed through the tapered trunk of the tree. Presented in high relief, which gracefully descends the length of this magnificent work of art. The expanses of its diminishing width and the lateral plane of this sculpture are accentuated by the incised motifs supporting the six symmetrically placed, undulant branches, which issue forth from the upright and centrally located element of this piece. The tips of the branches and the top of the tree appear to continue around the boulder, which imparts a soft, natural and three-dimensional quality. Densely populated and lightly textured foliage, with raised central ridge and sinuous elliptical tips, creates a rich contrast against the smooth poised branches. Emanating from the tender young stems, each verdant form dances upon the surface of this stone in the same way a leaf, dangling from outstretched limbs, flutters in the wind. All the major religions of India spread to Cambodia hundreds of years prior to the 10 th century. Thus. The sculptors of the Khmer devarajas were obligated to follow rules, conventions and motifs originally devised in India that were just as syncretic as their religions. ANTIQUE SOUTHEAST ASIAN SANDSTONE BUDDHA HEAD STATUE BUST, KHMER CAMBODIA 13TH C
Up for auction is a very important 13th century bust of King Jayavarman VII. King Jayavarman VII has been known throughout the last 1000+ years of history for the astounding temples that he built in the Angkor and Bayon areas of Cambodia during the Khmer Empire. The Khmer were probably the last great civilization of ancient builders that the Earth will see. It is recorded that some of their temples were built within a 20 year span- truly astounding in comparison with many European cathedrals that took hundreds of years. King Jayavarman VII's reign is responsible for the construction of Buddhist temple complexes rivaling the Giza Pyramids in size. Scale, and grandeur. He is known as one of their most prominent rulers. The temples built during his time were extremely complex, constructed entirely out of stone, and featured extensive relief ... morecarvings of important occurrences and historical events. Some of these temples were so large that they were referred to as"mountains" This particular stone piece is a frontal bust taken from an Angkorian temple and features a representation of King Jayavarman VII as a Bodhisattva. The piece measures 34.3 cm including the base. The head is in great condition, but the base could use a repolishing. The piece is from an old collection. And is marked"ADS 73" from its original collection in 1973 by a California doctor. This is an amazing opportunity to acquire a piece that would normally only be available at a Sotheby's Antiquities Sale in Paris or New York and with an estimate guaranteed to be over $10,000. Here is another offering for my appearance on ebay during which I will be making available a limited number of objects that I feel are appropriate for the ebay market. I do this to place modestly priced objects of excellent value as well as to occasionally meet a new collector. The objects offered are from items I have either been consigned over the past year or items I have had over the past 10-20 years simply in storage. As some of you may remember or be aware I have well over 20 years of experience as a specialist in early Southeast Asian forms. I am presenting these pieces after having carefully examined them over a substantial period of time and am 100% confident in the dating I will give to each piece. In this lot we have a Thai/ Khmer soft sandstone head of a deity measuring 9 INCHES TALL AND INCLUDING THE METAL MUSEUM MOUNT 12 INCHES IN HEIGHT. This is a Bayon 13th century form with a typical pointed upper jatamuka detailed with arched shapes above a Bayon type of face.Connecting raised eyebrows converge at the central point above the downcast linear eyes which lead to a broad Khmer shaped nose above broad lips. PLEASE NOTE the tip of the nose has been repaired) The piece has long ears with typical tripart inner ear shapes. There are the remains of the three rings normally seen on the neck. This is a soft grey/buff colored sandstone that has an orange/rust oxide burial patina from its internment. It has significant surface wear.Deep consolidation of earth particles in the surface of the stone and in my view is very typical in iconography and wear from this period.
