The Shan State is located in the northeast of Burma(Myanmar) It covers 155.800 km, almost a quarter of the total area of that country. The state gets its name from the Shan people, the largest of several ethnic groups that inhabit the hills and plateaus of the largely rural area. Description: Exquisite 19th century Burmese meditating Mandalay Buddha. Finely carved of Burmese teakwood, lacquer painted, gilded, and ornately decorated. Buddha is depicted seated in the'Virasana' pose, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The missing left hand would have rested palm-open on his lap, while the right hand forms the'Bhumisparsa' mudra, or'Calling the Earth to Witness' gesture. He wears an elaborately flowing robe, typical of Mandalay style Buddhas, worn diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered, with the garment's end flap drapes over the shoulder in layers of compound plates. The garment ... moreelegantly cascades in mirrored layers of shallow pleats, swirled at the robe's bottom hem. xxx Buddha's face is masterfully carved and hand-painted with a serene and poise expression. With downcast eyes, an aquiline nose, small bow-shaped lips smiling, and a rounded chin. The head is covered by a simple headdress, surmounted by a domed Ushnisha and adorned by a headband separating his hairline from his forehead. Elongated earlobes grace the sides of his face, marked by embossing of the hole and lobe boundaries. It em for Sale: Antique Burmese Buddha Statue 18th- 19th Century This is a serene. Rather primitive, Buddha dating to the 18th or 19th century. Hand carved in wood, it is covered in black lacquer and then covered in gilt paint. It comes from an estate collected in the early to mid 20th century. We will be listing 5 pieces from this estate, so please look at our other items. The Buddha is sitting and in the position of the"earth touching" gesture. It is in good shape with some loss to the gilt. The main flaw are some small worm holes, especially in the base. Please see photos at the end.
