Up for auction is a very important 13th century bust of King Jayavarman VII. King Jayavarman VII has been known throughout the last 1000+ years of history for the astounding temples that he built in the Angkor and Bayon areas of Cambodia during the Khmer Empire. The Khmer were probably the last great civilization of ancient builders that the Earth will see. It is recorded that some of their temples were built within a 20 year span- truly astounding in comparison with many European cathedrals that took hundreds of years. King Jayavarman VII's reign is responsible for the construction of Buddhist temple complexes rivaling the Giza Pyramids in size. Scale, and grandeur. He is known as one of their most prominent rulers. The temples built during his time were extremely complex, constructed entirely out of stone, and featured extensive relief ... morecarvings of important occurrences and historical events. Some of these temples were so large that they were referred to as"mountains" This particular stone piece is a frontal bust taken from an Angkorian temple and features a representation of King Jayavarman VII as a Bodhisattva. The piece measures 34.3 cm including the base. The head is in great condition, but the base could use a repolishing. The piece is from an old collection. And is marked"ADS 73" from its original collection in 1973 by a California doctor. Antique Southeast Asian Hand Carved Wooden Panel Sculpture of Birds
This is a Southeast Asia hand carved panel or sculpture of of carved birds which include peacocks. A rooster, other birds, and tropical plants. The piece is carved from a single block of wood. It is gold leafed. It belonged to my grandparents so I know it is over 50 years old because it always hung in their living room. The gold leafed carving measure 16.5 x 10.5 and is framed to 24 x 15.5 inches. It is in perfect condition except for a stain on the bottom left red velvet mat. Antique Primitive Tribal Wood Statue Pair Male Female Southeast Asian/Filipino?
Beautiful and powerful carved wood statues of male and female w/baby with walking stick and spear carrying baskets accompanied by their dogs. Quietly stunning. 16.5" 17 1/8" H. Base varies. But 6.5" at widest. The pair weighs approximately 14 pounds. Has been in family at least 70 years. Brought back during army years I believe from Philippines. I have seen another similar pair that was stated to be from Burma by an Asian artist. Father spent time in Shanghai at one point, so it could have come via that route. I apologize for the uncertainty, but I am sure some folks out there could identify better and I'll update as I hear. I have included pics of both brighter and more subtle light to give you the sense of how different lighting affects how the statues display. The"flaws" and cracks have existed in this pair ... morefor many decades. These are Antiques and clearly display as such and do not affect the impact and power that these two statues possess. Except in a positive way- especially as presented as a Pair. The statues have been solid and have held in the condition they are in, even with the defined cracks at the base, baskets and other areas. There is also a glued"repair" on the tip of the spear which the male carries, and which I am sure a motivated party could further perfect. The statues have not been cleaned or polished. Merely lightly brush-vacuumed off. The statue pair displays with a timelessness. Beauty and authenticity which cannot be denied. I have only seen a few pairs like this. Each different in various ways. In the pair for sale here, the woman has a baby/child positioned at the tip of her walking stick/spear! The only other ones I've ever seen had the woman carrying her baby in a front sack, while the other had no baby at all. I do not know what type of wood these are carved from, but one of the previously described pair of similar size weighed only 8 pounds total, while this pair for sale here weighs 14 pounds before packing. The bottom apparently has some breakage, and there is a section of leg that looks to have been patched with a different material. Perhaps this"damage" was really an original poor casting.
