Crafted during the late 18th Century, this English Georgian Hepplewhite Serpentine Sideboard is a visual delight- though not suitable for serious collectors, due to it's light alterations and numerous replacements, it has been carefully preserved and restored over the years and is fully functional. The overall form is sweeping, the top conforming to the overall serpentine shape of the case; the middle section has sliding panel doors revealing a large and spacious storage space. American Federal Inlaid Mahogany Serpentine Sideboard New York. C. 1790-1800 Item# 130204FPP20 This is a simply gorgeous American Federal Sideboard with Serpentine form. Crafted of solid Mahogany with stringer inlays during the last years of the 18th Century. The top is a single solid plank of mahogany conforming to the sharp serpentine shape of the case, affixed from the underside with entirely original hand filed steel screws- as a result of the screw joinery, coupled with years of experiencing shrinking and expanding with humidity changes, the top has experienced some light cracking along the grains(review images and condition for full overview) Beneath the slight projection of the top. A pair of drawers on either side of the case flank a pair of doors beneath a larger medial drawer. All of the drawers have the typical joinery, large colonial ... morehand dovetails beneath applied cockbead molding, the drawer bottoms sharply chamfered to slide into rabbets along the drawer frame with cut iron nails tacking the back edge. While one drawer bottom is partially poplar, the rest remain almost purely crafted of yellow pine secondary woods, the curving drawer fronts crafted with laminated yellow pine blocks beneath a fine flamed grain mahogany veneer. The composition of the veneers is remarkable, the drawers flowing from one into the next with mostly pure transitions. Fully original oval brasses smoothly operate the drawers, all of which have fine smooth action and great strength. The case rests over long tapered legs of unusual thin profiles- note the fragility of the toes. How each leg comes as close to a point as possible while raising the substantial weight of this great case. It has a gorgeous base with three roll-front flame mahogany dovetail drawers with big glass knobs on the top row, and on the bottom are two demi-lune shaped flame mahogany doors, and three flame mahogany hand-cut dovetail curved front drawers. It has empire scroll posts going down into an empire curl foot, and a thick banded top goes up against the molded flame mahogany triple-section four-post backsplash. It does come with a key. The top has been re-sprayed to remove nicks and dings, and the front has been re-sprayed in a satin sheen lacquer to bring out the look of the flame mahogany. Other than a few nicks and dings along the top of the backsplash molding and the edge of the top, it is in unbelievable condition overall for its age. The overall size is 72 inches long, 23 inches deep, 41 inches high to the top of the base, and 51.5 inches to the top of the backsplash. The backsplash even has a plate groove so you can display plates on top. The center curved front drawers are 24 inches wide, and the doors are 15 inches wide. The piece is joined with hand cut dovetails, machine beveled panels that slide into rabbets in the frame throughout and fine stamped hardware. The grains selected for the mahogany surfaces simply glow, reflecting warm light in soft parallel rays. Each front panel is framed in squared stringer inlays with notched corners, the legs decorated with hanging bellflower inlays and the apron finished with fine bands of ebony and golden stringer inlay. Henkel Harris Mahogany Sideboard or Buffet (Style # 2350)
You are bidding on a Henkel Harris Mahogany Sideboard or Buffet(Model# 2350) in the# 29 Finish. This bow-front sideboard measures approximately 52-1/8” wide by 23” deep by 35-3/4” high. The sideboard has two cupboard doors with string inlay flanking a drawer with felt lining above a recessed front drawer raised on square tapering legs ending in spade feet. It also features solid brass hardware and retains its three original keys. The sideboard was fabricated in 1984. The sideboard has normal age-appropriate wear with some surface scratches. I have attempted to show the worst of these scratches on the top of the sideboard(Image 12) After cleaning the furniture with Howard Orange Oil Furniture Polish. These scratches were virtually unnoticeable(and almost impossible to capture in a photograph) In fact, I believe that the scratches appear far ... moreworse in the photograph(Image 12) than they do in person. Aside from these surface scratches, I would describe the sideboard as being in excellent condition. All in all. This sideboard appears to have been well cared for, is in very clean condition, and presents beautifully. It is the responsibility of the buyer to arrange packing and shipping. This sideboard has a cellarette drawer and fitted interior for wine and decanter bottles on the sides, cabinets below and large storage drawers at the center.All the drawers are exquisitely hand dovetailed and retain their original brass Lion Head pulls and all the locks are intact. There are 2 keys with this fine piece and all the locks work except the bottom cabinet on each side. The drawers and door fronts are all executed in gorgeous flamed mahogany encased with petite moldings.
