This is a very nice solid mahogany sideboard with mortise and tenon joinery. It has very nice details and is an attractive Federalist style piece with a combination of drawers and open cabinets to hold your china. Flatware and serving pieces. It is in very good condition structurally although there is a surface scratch the side that could be sanded out and re-stained some slight"staining" to the finish on top. Which could also be fixed. If it weren't for the secondary woods, which are clearly American, one would consider it continental, as this is a very popular French form. However, the secondaries of poplar and pine place its origin in New World. The tell-tale New York style reeding on the legs and lower shelf also point to an American origin and probably New York. Vintage Federal American Style Sideboard Buffet made of Mahogany with Inlay and a Serpentine Front. The sideboard has many inlay designs including the frames around the drawers and doors. Corner inlay on the doors, a center oval, and inlay up and down the front legs. There is raised moulding that encases the oval inlay pattern(1 strip of moulding is missing)pictured) Each side has 1 cabinet and 1 drawer with 1 large partitioned and felt lined drawer in the center. This sideboard was made by Hellam Furniture Co. in Hellam. PA. Hellam made high quality furniture from the turn of the centrury until mid century. This sideboard/buffet has beautiful inlay, with dovetail drawers and it is a federal style like Hepplewhite or Sheridan. The condition is vintage with light surface scratches appropriate with age(highlighted in the pics) It is of medium size at 66 inches long. 21 wide and 38.8 high. American Federal mahogany and mahogany veneer bow front sideboard. Overhanging top above five drawers. The center drawer is the widest and is flanked by a small square drawer and a demi-lune drawer. Below are corresponding compartments. The center compartment has two doors flanked by a three-section wine storage drawer. A demi-lune drawer is at the end. Square tapered legs have been cut down. Drawer handles: Octagonal stamped brasses with bald eagle below thirteen stars. C1840(76" X 28" X 38" Top is scratched but can easily be sanded and refinished.
