I am not sure of the purchase price. The age, or the wood type. The stain is a chestnut color. The desk are two parts. The approximate dimensions of the lower secretary desk part are 36 inches tall, 34.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep. The approximate dimensions of the upper bookshelf part are 33 inches tall. 32 inches wide at the bottom(where it rest on the secretary desk) and 36.5 inches tall(from the top moulding trim) 11.5 inches deep. The drawers have dovetail construction and all four drawers open and close fully. The handles. Hinges, and hardware appear to be brass(not positive of the material) One of the eight handles came out of the hinge socket. I have the handle loose so it can be reattached and repaired. The bookshelf unit has a glass front. The glass is in good shape with some sticker residue which needs to be cleaned. The very top of the bookshelf has a circular mark which appears to be where the previous owner(s) kept a plant. On the fold down writing desk there is a small chip in the wood on the left hand corner. There are four holes on top of the secretary desk where the bookcase is attached also there are scratches and wear from the bookcase rests(these are not visible when the desk is attached) The back has rough unfinished wood showing. The fold down writing surface is fully functional. It folds down and rests on the upper drawer which pulls out. Feel free to ask any questions if you need further description or clarification. TOP, AND BOTTOM! it is rare to find these chests/desks dovetailed, let alone the base and top dovetailed. Solid Cherry Case. Again, its a very early sheraton piece, most sheraton desks have paneled sides, this is solid sides indicating it was made slightly after 1800 to about 1810 to 1815. Dovetailed drawer construction. Cherry slant lid. With Flame Burl Mahogany veneer front. Pine Drawer Fronts. With Mahogany Cockbeading, and Mahogany Flame Burl Veneers and Poplar sides, and bottoms. Cherry. Mahogany veneers, Pine drawer fronts with mahogany veneers, and Poplar Secondary woods. The interior has a prospect door that opens to reveal 4 drawers. Tiger maple turned column drawers next to the prospect door. drawers slide great on the ORIGINAL drawer slides. Which is one of the first items to wear out on the early desks, usually resulting in replacements. Unusually tall writing surface. Which would indicate the desk was originally owned by a shop keeper or a businessman of sorts. you will need a tall stool to set at the desk. a nice early windsor type stool would look nice with the desk! Original Finish. Brass drawer pulls, and all of the interior knobs, and lid support knobs. Condition: aside from being the cleanest desk we have ever owned. The overall physical condition is NEAR MINT 98% PRESERVED CONDITION! the only flaws are minor veneer chips on the base from a stool/chair, and 2 spots of veneer loss on the lid, and veneer split due to wood shrinkage on the lid. Very good overall condition, This gorgeous antique burl walnut secretaire was crafted in France around the year 1900. Today. This piece remains very beautiful, with a rich walnut complexion and a highly pronounced grain. The face is flanked by a set of carved columns that run the entire height of this piece, which ends with elegant bun feet. A total of 11 drawers and 1 interior cabinet provide a large amount of storage space, all under lock and key. The locks, however, are quite worn and operate with difficulty. The moulding has also sustained some wear, including a minor wood separation in the front and a filled-in missing piece in the back. Overall condition therefore remains very good. The desk provides a very beautiful workspace. With a variety of drawers. This secretaire contains plenty of storage space. The sides look great. The finish on the very top has worn a bit.
