There is actually a label ... moreon the bottom with a maker's mark. Which we have been unable to identify. I have provided a picture of it- I believe it is a combination of the letters M S and I. It is also marked"No. 58747" and"528" The original hardboard back was marked"valnot" which means"walnut" in Swedish. We had to replace the back so this indicator has been removed. We are not sure which parts of the desk are composed of Walnut. Most of the desk surfaces have a gorgeous veneer. The star feature of the desk is the perfectly curved cylinder top. Which displays a quad-cut mirrored veneer design. When opened, there is a writing surface that can be pulled out. It measures 33 3/4" by 17" It sits 28 1/4" off of the floor. There are 5 cubbies which are all 3 7/8" tall. They vary in width from left to right: 8" 1 7/8" 10 7/8" 1 7/8" and 8" There are 3 small drawers between the writing surface and the cubbies. All of the drawers are 1 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" deep. The top and bottom drawers are 8 7/16" wide, and the center drawer is 12 5/16" wide. There are also 3 drawers below the writing surface, each of which measures 4 1/8" tall, 16" deep and 31 3/16" wide. This is in great condition overall with some general signs of age or use. There are some chips in the veneer on the bottom/front portion of the bottom drawer. The cubby and small drawer structure on the interior of the desk is slightly bowed. This does not effect the functionality in any way. The back of the desk has been professionally replaced with a material very similar to the original. Please see pictures for more details. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. Cherry Antique 1790 Period New England Secretary Desk. Hand crafted of solid cherry about 1790 in New England. This secretary desk is a classic. The finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina, waxed and buffed, it needs only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth to maintain its luster. Graduated drawers have original chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetails. Brasses are old but not original on this authentic Federal period furniture. On the top. Hand cut dovetail joinery is visible. Drawer dividers are mortised into the side planks of cherry. The hand planed back still has some rose cut hand made nails. Feet have been rebuilt many years ago, and there are restorations around the hinges and above the lid. The key is a handle only, the drop front lock does not work. Originally crafted during the last quarter of the 18th Century and altered during the first quarter of the 20th Century. It was probably a more plain version of the rather fine piece we see today. Altered to suit the appetite for high-style pieces during the first quarter of the 20th Century. Crafted of mahogany veneers with pine and oak secondaries, the case features two over three graduated drawers with replaced brasses over bold oversized bracket feet. The slant front drops over original hinges to rest on extending lopers, revealing a large mahogany writing surface with six document drawers over two long-thin drawers flanked on either ... moreside by an inverted graduated stack of drawers- this is a rather unusual feature, the graduation going from largest on the top to smallest on the bottom. The mahogany may have been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when mahogany became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. Unique 17th Century French Secretary Drop Front Desk
What's the difference between an antique and a treasure? This is a museum quality piece of furniture with an amazing history! Comes from a Chateau in France that was built in 1316. This beautiful desk is at least 400 years old and survived a laceration from the Nazi's that confiscated the Chateau during World War II. This unique desk has a slant front with a beautiful marquetry floral design on the front. The wood appears to be walnut with several different fruit woods as a veneer. There are six drawers in the interior and a shelf above them for storage. There is a secret compartment in the center and locks within the secret area to lock the two drawers in front. The condition is very solid.there are several repairs made to the surface from the damage that was done. But the restoration was well done. I'm selling this beautiful antique secretary made of solid mahogany that I received from a gentleman who said it was in his family for 7 generations and was originally purchased in the Hudson River Valley in New York by his steamboat captain great-great-great-great-great grandfather in approximately 1800. It has 3 hidden compartments and lots of pigeon holes and small drawers. It comes with the keys for the upper hutch. The fold down desk and the small door inside but not the drawers below. It has the original glass, which is wavy and has bubbles in it, in both panels on the left side but not on the right side. One pane is missing on the right side but would be easy enough to replace. Lots of character on this gorgeous old piece. It measures 81 inches high, 47 inches wide and is 23-1/2 inches deep at the bottom. Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. You don't see them like this anymore. This must have taken months to complete. It was passed down for generations to a friend and he gave it to me for helping him move. UNBELIEVEABLE WORK. I have never seen one this nice before. Please notice that due to being over a 200 hundred years old it does show signs of wear and cracking in places. He told me that he believes it is from the 1700's so if you know anything more about this please let me know. This sale is for a fantastic highly figured three-piece slant front tiger maple secretary desk. This desk is all hand made and took over two months to complete! It is all mortis and tenon construction with all of the tenon's being held in place with square walnut wooden pegs. Starting at the top with the bookcase section. It features crown and trim molding with hand made dentil molding. It has two doors which are also mortis and tenon with square walnut wooden pegs; there are two raised panels per door and two hand-turned tiger maple knobs with the turnbuckles attached to the knobs on the interior. Turning the knob rotates the turnbuckle which opens the doors. The doors also have two inlaid diamond escutcheons that are also walnut. It has the hand-chiseled cutouts for recessed antique locks as well as screw holes for the locks, but no ... morelocks are present. It has three large shelves that are hand beaded along the front edge. There is trim around the bottom edge of the book case attached to the top of the desk portion. Next is the compartment section of the desk. It has a mortis and tenon construction flip-down door with a single raised panel. It also has the hand inlaid walnut escutcheon and chiseled lock cutout. It has six gothic-style letter compartments on the interior and has nine all hand-dovetailed drawers below the cutouts. The drawer bottoms are all hand-planed with an antique hand plane and are also hand-chamfered. It has six small drawers over three larger with all hand-turned tiger maple knobs for each of the nine drawers. All of the screw holes are hand chiseled. There is also trim around the bottom of the desk compartment which is attached to the top of the desk. Finally. The desk portion. The desk is all mortis and tenon construction as well, being pinned with walnut pegs just like the rest of the desk.
