Fine Antique 18th Century American Chippendale Mahogany Slant Front Desk c.1770

Description: This listing is for a Chippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with ... morebrass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

The desk features a gorgeous original finish and period hardware. There are four graduated drawers over flared french feet and shaped skirt. The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. Outstanding condition and very solid and strong. Top section has 8 small drawers. 6 pigeon holes, 1 small door and three hidden compartments behind the small door. You remove the little drawer and shelf and both ... moresides flip out with hidden compartments and there is another hidden compartment under where the small drawer goes. The lower section has 4 drawers with hand cut dove tail or wedge joints, decorative brass handles and the slatted back. Measures 41 3/4" tall, 37 1/4" wide and 21 1/2" deep. You would have to look long and hard to find a nicer one. As with all antiques including vintage or used items expect to find some signs of wear, use, nicks, rubs or scratches and age wear to finish that is common to all antiques due to age and use. In some cases occasional repairs are done to keep these antique's in service for all these years. Here is a fantastic original circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany may have been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when mahogany became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The first feat was the selection of boards that would truly set this desk apart- it is an understatement to describe the golden and brilliant flow of mahogany from the slant lid through the top as simply brilliant. It is pure and breathtaking. The paired boards are literally superior to almost every desk we have handled in their visual qualities: the excited swirls of each board flow into one another with a symmetry that is not simply mirrored or"match-booked" but is carefully planned and took great consideration on the part of the craftsman. The graduated drawer facades intentionally restrained in order to highlight the stunning gilt-bronze hardware on each drawer. Probably New England in origin(maybe Salem. Massachusetts as that is where I was told it was purchased from years ago) Mahogany and mahogany veneer. Nice pencil inlay on the drawers. Beautiful French style splayed feet. Hand Dovetailed drawers(pic#8) It is 2 pieces that are correct for each other. Below the upper piece you can see hand dovetailing(pic#7) It is solid mahogany and mahogany veneer. with pencil inlays and a band of birds-eye-maple inlay on the top, bottom, and front of flip desk.It is a beautiful piece. Old oxidized back(pic#6) The bottom consists of 3 bookmatched drawers. The upper part has 2 tambour doors and a central door. Behind the central ... moredoor is 2 drawers and cubby hole. Behind the tambours ar 2 drawers and cubby holes. The cubbies are painted inside a sort of teal color. Condition is fair for age. This piece is over 200 years old. No breaks on the legs. The tambours open and close smoothly. 1 tambour door has crack on a piece of wood that was re-glued(door work smoothly) Drawers open and close smoothly. It is structurally sound. The finish is an old re-finish. The re-finish is quite worn and probably should be refinished again. Drawer pulls are replaced and lower drawer pull is not the exact same as others. I would replace the pulls with Hepplewhite style pulls. Inside central upper door the upper drawer is missing its pull(pic#3) There are age cracks in the side. The writing surface felt is an older replacement. The central upper door has a strip on veneer loss at the very top(pic#2) The central upper drawer has old tape residue from someone taping it shut years ago(pic#2) On the legs there are areas where the finish is light probably from surface moister(pic#9 shows some) There are some losses to the veneer mostly noticed on the bottom(pic 10) There is a crack and losses to the wr

All drawers have original bail pulls and locks. Writing height 31” 54” WIDE 38” DEEP. KNEE OPENING IS 25 1/2” HIGH- and 26.5” wide. On many period desks. This opening does not accommodate a modern chair or person comfortably rendering the desk far less desirable. Many factors are important when considering a period antique- an appropriate size- usable in the modern home. All original construction and materials- the quality of which will impact value. Excellent color and wood quality. A very comparable desk is offered by Kentshire Galleries for $58.000. Or this one for only $48.000. Mine is a bargain at $16.850. Each of the 16 side drawers will hold US legal size file ... morefolders laid flat. Fully restored. All drawers are strong, function smoothly and fit correctly. Figured Cuban Mahogany throughout with cockbeaded drawers. Comprised of two pedestals and the top which simply lifts off for extremely easy moving. A Unique William IV Mahogany Partners Desk c.1830-35 Period: William IV Provenance: Unknown Date: c.1830-35 Depth: 36 inches Width: 55 inches Height: 29.5 inches The very unusual partners desk of mahogany veneers having a rounded rectangular top with black leather insert set with two brass outlined slots for Bills and Letters. The right hand pedestal on rollers fitted with three short drawers, the reverse with drawers and the side with dummy drawers, the left hand side with a short frieze drawer, on an unusual wrought iron support, the whole on plinth bases, survives from the Regency to William IV period. The condition is mainly good. And thoroughly loved, with the leather-writing surface is ... moretired but full of character with one or two gauge marks, whilst the mahogany veneers are super quality, good colour and healthy patina with some knocks and markings one would expect from a piece of this standing. There is one crack to the end-facing pedestal which has been filled. We have restored her to an extent, being given a light polish and made mechanically sound with one or two veneers. She is structurally true and has good portability due to sitting on the support castor and rollers. The castor is marked to both sides, one reads‘VR’ with a crown motif, the other side with‘Harcort Bros Patent Birmingham’ We can safely say this is for James Harcourt, Staniforth Street, Birmingham, brassfounder(1816) At the Great Exhibition of 1851 their exhibits included two bell pulls and a vase that were appreciated by the reviewer. I'm selling this beautiful antique secretary made of solid mahogany that I received from a gentleman who said it was in his family for 7 generations and was originally purchased in the Hudson River Valley in New York by his steamboat captain great-great-great-great-great grandfather in approximately 1800. It has 3 hidden compartments and lots of pigeon holes and small drawers. It comes with the keys for the upper hutch. The fold down desk and the small door inside but not the drawers below. It has the original glass, which is wavy and has bubbles in it, in both panels on the left side but not on the right side. One pane is missing on the right side but would be easy enough to replace. Lots of character on this gorgeous old piece. It measures 81 inches high, 47 inches wide and is 23-1/2 inches deep at the bottom. Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. The chair shown to give a sense of scale Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably well preserved English Georgian Mahogany Kneehole Desk from the third quarter of the 18th century. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk. Just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers ... moreare fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer. Appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. VERY FINE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE SLANT FRONT DESK WITH FITTED INTERIOR Probably Newburyport. Massachusetts c. 1770 Provenance from the Israel Sack Collection w/ original label signed by Israel Sack in top drawer Held in a single collection since 1931(provenance details available upon request) Item# 409LXI13S A remarkable work of art from the Newburyport area of Massachusetts. This fine American Chippendale desk is clearly executed by a craftsman of some skill. The case is joined in a manner typical of the work center, the top with tidy exposed dovetails along both sides, the bottom board likewise dovetailed into the sides of the case. The drawer blades are set into the sides of the case behind a thin applied stile on either side, these carved with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding around the drawers. The backboards are bevelled around ... moreall three edges to set flush against the back, affixed at regular intervals with mostly original iron sprigs. Each drawer is crafted with utmost precision and care, the complex blocked drawer sawn from a very thick board in a manner that leaves the drawer light and agile while the beautiful mahogany plank maintains strength and stability. These slide smoothly in and out of the case with little friction or wiggle. The lid lowers to rest on a pair of mahogany lopers revealing an attractive fitted interior with six pigeon-hole compartments over three small drawers over two large drawers and an open storage compartment flanked by a pair of blocked drawers with half-shell carvings. A pair of document drawers flank the middlemost pigeon-hole and drawer, these with beautiful turned columns closely related to the Newburyport work center, one inscribed"William Holker/ Mooney's Block Water Street" The entire case rests over ogee bracket feet and conforming stepped molding, the lower 1 3/4" of all feet having been replaced in the early 20th century. The left most drawer retains 2 of the original cut glass ink bottles(one damaged) Lower Part: Cherry tapered leg base. With a drawer. The legs are mortised and pinned into the side front and back rails, all consisting of 1 1/2" thick cherry. The side rails that are attached to the base are made of mahogany on the sides and yellow pine on the back. All have hand cut nails holding them onto the base. We are confident that the desk was made in Philadelphia(or its environs) around 1770 to the 1790's. The base. However, is a slightly different story. We believe the base was made FOR the top to rest on, and was made by a country cabinet shop; klunky, thick, and heavy woods, unrefined dovetails on the drawer construction(as opposed to the fine construction of the top, made by a well trained cabinet shop in a city manner with very fine wood, thinly cut, fine hand cut dovetails, and very talented blind cut dovetails in the case) The blind cut dovetails are impressive and very difficult to master on such a fine scale as this- it took a very talented city cabinet shop to make such a thing, and fine, imported English cut glass ink bottles were only available in cities. ENGLISH GEORGE III MAHOGANY SLANT FRONT DESK Circa 1780-1800 Item# 412WZQ05A This fine antique English George III slant front desk is noteworthy for it's very attractive proportions. Having a more slender frame than many of the desks of the period. It is an object that does not impose itself on a room, but rather it's graceful and understated form bring depth and visual interest to whatever space it becomes a part of. With a deep and wonderfully oxidized early finish, preserved under many layers of glowing wax, the vibrant grains of the solid mahogany planks utilized in all primary surfaces are shown in their best light. The case itself is of simple construction. The sides dovetailed into the bottom, the top and sides joined with a blind dovetail to leave a smooth undisturbed top surface. The slant lid falls over original wrought ... moreiron hinges to rest on a pair of projecting lopers with original shaped brass pulls, revealing a handsomely fitted interior with a pair of pigeon-hole slots with scalloped valances flanking the fluted document drawers and molded prospect door. The document drawers are inoperable from the front, these being the first clue that the entire prospect section of the interior is actually a hidden compartment- by opening the prospect door and depressing a switch hidden in the top of the open space, the entire box of both document drawers and prospect door is released to reveal the hidden access to the document drawers from the back. The rest of the little drawers lining the interior are very well crafted, each with precise little dovetails in the oak secondary woods and retaining their original knobs. The drawers of the facade are constructed in the typical manner. Each with cockbead molding applied to one-third depth around the hand dovetailed oak secondary woods- all drawers remain in untouched condition, retaining their original locks, brasses and structure. EXCEEDINGLY FINE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE OXBOW DESK OVER BALL AND CLAW FEET Boston. Massachusetts c. 1760-80 Retaining original brasses. Feet and chalk inscription to underside Item# 411MKP15V A remarkable work of art. This fine American Chippendale slant front desk features the very desirable"oxbow" or"serpentine" facade cherished in the best pieces. Hewn from incredibly thick mahogany logs, these drawers are sawn into shape with a continuous plank to achieve the fluid movement found in the case. The top drawer is particularly difficult to execute, as this retains much more of the mahogany and not only serpentines with the case but also is faceted along the top edge. Retaining it's brilliant polished brass batwing hardware, the desk remains in an outstanding state of preservation. The drawer structures are untouched. ... moreEven the applied runners remaining original to the case. These are crafted in the typical manner for the Northern Shore of Massachusetts- the pine frame is dovetailed along the front and back, the bottom deeply chamfered and set into rabbets in the sides of the drawer over which a thin pine runner is applied to create the groove. They slide easily in and out of the case over a few original and several replaced interior case runners, these nailed to the case from the inside. The drawers are divided by drawer blades with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding, affixed into the sides of the case on either end with open dovetails; as economical craftsmen, only a few inches of mahogany line the front of the drawer blade, which is backed by several inches of pine. The interior is somewhat typical of the region. Having a stepped interior with a central half-shell carved drawer over a conforming blocked front drawer flanked by document drawers and three pigeon-hole letter compartments. The outer pigeon-hole valances are actually hidden drawers, each crafted with uncompromising workmanship of tiny dovetails to match the other drawers. This is a reproduction of a Boston Block Front Knee-Hole African Mahogany Desk. The original is located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It has never been used. There are 8 drawers and a center storage area behind the tombstone door. The primary wood is solid African Mahogany and the secondary wood is pop lar. The finish is a hard tung oil and wax. Drawers have hand cut dovetails on the sides. The back of the desk is finished. So it can be placed anywhere in the room. The dimensions are 38" W x 22" D x 30" H. It was custom hand made by me with over 400 hours of work. However the person that ordered it never followed through. The hardware is solid brass by Ball& Ball. Extremely Rare 18th Century English Small Mahogany Writing Desk
This was my grandmother mother mahogany desk that belong to her great great grandmother back in 18 century. This been past down family generation. It beautiful desk. Mahogany desk have some scratchs and some cracks. Inside the desk their a crack across. Still great shape for ages. My grandmother told me the key for desk been missing for years. She never had the key. It very light wood. Not that heavy. Very very very old. But great shape. I've never never seen this mahogany desk that old and any where. I called Sothebys Auction. They told me send some pictures. Few people from Sothebys been working on it and told me this desk worth 8 thousand. Few other auction said the same things. Pick up only! Not free shipping!
