Some vintage wear, but nothing to diminish the antique beauty. The roll top rolls beautifully. The top cover appears to be restored. High quality. Hard to find swivel chair with very few flaws. Description: This listing is for a Chippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with ... morebrass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. Cherry Antique 1790 Period New England Secretary Desk. Hand crafted of solid cherry about 1790 in New England. This secretary desk is a classic. The finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina, waxed and buffed, it needs only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth to maintain its luster. Graduated drawers have original chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetails. Brasses are old but not original on this authentic Federal period furniture. On the top. Hand cut dovetail joinery is visible. Drawer dividers are mortised into the side planks of cherry. The hand planed back still has some rose cut hand made nails. Circa 1800, the painting is probably later. It is painted green with raised gold Chinese style decoration. The wood is maple with pine secondary as far as we can tell. The interior features lots of drawers and cubby holes. Even the cross hatched painted"moulding" on the top of the cubby holes are all little drawers. The desk is approx. 85" high by 37" wide by 20" deep and has a cornice with dentil molding over the bookcase section which features original glass and adjustable shelves. The lower section has a pull out desk with fitted interior over three graduated drawers, all on straight bracket feet. The finish is old, possibly original. The hardware is period but is probably not original. There have been at least two different sets of hardware on the piece over the years. This is the proper style for the piece though two of the back-plates are different than the rest. The desk features a gorgeous original finish and period hardware. There are four graduated drawers over flared french feet and shaped skirt. The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. American Federal Walnut Slant Front Desk. Mid-Atlantic States With satinwood inlays over splayed French feet; c. 1790-1810 Item# 130102EWP01 This is a very fine American Federal Period Slant Front Desk of Mid-Atlantic origin. Crafted in solid walnut c. 1790-1810. The lid is a highly figured single board(14 1/4" in horizontal depth) flanked by lipped cleats pinned on either end with an applied molded front lip. It lowers over original forged iron hinges to rest on walnut lopers, revealing eight small drawers over eight valanced pigeon-hole slots flanking a tombstone-door with channel-molded document drawers on either side of it. The scroll cut form of each valance over the pigeon-holes perfectly matches the form of the slot dividers. The interior drawers have numerous inscriptions: each has a"WW" which are intertwined on some ... moredrawers as"X/ one inscribed"Small.amd 74.957 NDE" The interior door opens to reveal a pair of drawers over a large cubby, one of the drawers inscribed: J C(quite clear) Reuben. Or possibly" J C Lieutenant" and dated" January 25th 1787" the 17 of 1787 is quite unclear. But after carefully examining it we are pretty sure that is what is inscribed. The interior cubby is an ingenious bit of craftsmanship- by pulling out a nail from the middle backboard. That backboard quickly is removed from the case; this reveals a natural knot in the pine board behind the cubby-hole with two tiny tenons that drop into the desk; by lifting on this knot, the tenons lift and allow the entire cubby to slide forward out of the desk. It is a gorgeous and flawlessly crafted box of solid walnut with dovetail joinery, the back board lifting out of the cubby-box from rabbets along either side, revealing a pair of hidden drawers inside. It is so well crafted and hidden that while after a close examination, the careful observer might suspect the presence of hidden drawers, actually being able to find these requires access to the backboards. The lower section has 4 drawers with hand cut dove tail or wedge joints, decorative brass handles and the slatted back. Measures 41 3/4" tall, 37 1/4" wide and 21 1/2" deep. As with all antiques including vintage or used items expect to find some signs of wear, use, nicks, rubs or scratches and age wear to finish that is common to all antiques due to age and use. Original Antique 1753 Chippendale Engraving Plans & Specs Desk & Bookcase LXXVII
Description As described in the title and shown on the 10 photos and 2 scans(most accurate as to color and texture) This is an original engraving from a rather large volume that Thomas Chippendale published in 1754. We have no idea how many editions or printings were created from these rather well known plates. It was last matted and framed in the 1970's but the frame was damaged and we tossed it. We tested the mat and back and they are both acid neutral. The back is in good condition with the impressions of framing nails around the edges as would be expected. The mat is bright and clean without aging or damage so we are sending the print still mounted with two framer's strips on the back and the mat loose. The mat measures about 19 3/8" x 24 3/8" with an opening approx. 9 1/2" x 14 1/2" which shows and frames ... morethe plate impression. The print is on laid paper as it should be and is generally bright and clean with some ink fading and spotting. Outer area foxing or toning, several tiny pin holes and other expected wrinkles and marks. The bottom portion shows the remnants of binding and is bumped and injured as shown in the photos below. However, once the print is matted and framed, it presents quite nicely. The paper measures approx. 11" x 18" and the plate impression measures approx. 8 5/8" x 13 7/8" The upper right corner is stamped"LXXVII. and the name of furniture piece is"Desk& Bookcase. The bottom is marked"T. Chippendale inv. et del. Pub. according to act of Parliam. 1753. and"T. Muller sculp. There are many small numbers and marks that are in the engraving of the desk and bookcase- don't know if these are specs. or refer to plans. Please note that it was difficult for the camera to produce accurate colors and textures of the mat and print but we were able to scan small portions of both. Here is a fantastic original circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany may have been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when mahogany became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. Fine English Chippendale Mahogany Kneehole Desk c. 1740-60 Originality preserved throughout in the hardware and feet- Only the desk is being offered in this listing. The chair shown is offered elsewhere in our collection Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably preserved English Chippendale Period Kneehole Desk. Circa 1740-50. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk, just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer. Appearing to have never ... morebeen removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. Appearing to be part of the frame design, but actually pulls outward smoothly as an extra hand dovetailed drawer. This is a unique addition for the craftsman to make, as many of these knee hole desks are without such innovations. The wide top drawer pulls out to reveal a full dust shelf. The slant front desk circa 1750 has a fitted interior designed like the earlier period. The hardware also corresponds. The arched door bookcase is a later association. Whoever built it was very skilled as they are both equal to period construction work and symmetrical to the eye. The overall color is a beautiful match although the base shows more use. This is a big early American fall front desk with a 44 inch wide case. Plus a little more for the feet. It is made of cherry, and in great condition. Yes, it does have some professional restorations done, but come on, it's 225 years old and priced at a fraction of the cost of a reproduction one by a cabinet maker. The interior is very handsome. The fall front is not at all warped and fits flat and tight. So tight in fact that you will want to use the key to open it because you can barely get a grip with your finger tips. Antique Georgian Figured Mahogany Partners Desk. 1800-1830. Upon listing this desk. NONE of the other desks I saw on Ebay was even old. Three over six drawers on both sides. All drawers have original bail pulls and locks. Writing height 31” 54” WIDE 38” DEEP. KNEE OPENING IS 25 1/2” HIGH- and 26.5” wide. On many period desks. This opening does not accommodate a modern chair or person comfortably rendering the desk far less desirable. Many factors are important when considering a period antique- an appropriate size- usable in the modern home. All original construction and materials- the quality of which will impact value. Excellent color and wood quality. A very comparable desk is offered by Kentshire Galleries for $58.000. Or this one for only $48.000. Mine is a bargain at $16.850. Each of the 16 side drawers will hold US legal size file ... morefolders laid flat. Fully restored. All drawers are strong, function smoothly and fit correctly. Figured Cuban Mahogany throughout with cockbeaded drawers. Comprised of two pedestals and the top which simply lifts off for extremely easy moving. Strong antique casters make it easily moved when set up for cleaning. 18 Drawers- all finely hand dovetailed front and back. Three-quarter dustboards- which prevent access to locked drawers- only found on period desks. Several of these appear to have been replaced about 1900. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Delaware River Valley. C. 1760-80 Inscribed illegibly on top of hidden box and on underside of desk Item# 1312XIJ11PA Planed and carved from solid walnut. Reserving a fine burl for the lid and prospect drawer while utilizing a softer and more straight grained walnut for the drawers and case, the desk was clearly designed by a craftsman who understood how to present wood in it's best light. Built to last many lifetimes, every joint is permanent, every line flawless and of perfect relationship to the whole. The four graduating drawers are edged by a thin cockbead molding, these flanked by robust deeply fluted classical columns. The interior is likewise inspired ... moreby the Corinthian columns of Greece, the letter slots flanking the prospect drawer deeply fluted with a bead edging at the top and bottom- the crisp way these nearly flawlessly become part of the surface speaks to the craftsman's talent in working wood; the edge of these fluted columns has a tiny bevelled lip that allows the finger to easily grasp and remove the slots from the desk. The prospect drawer opens to reveal three graduated drawers set inside a double-bead edged box, this secretly released from the space when a button is depressed from inside of the desk- by opening the top drawer, feeling along the inside until a tiny knot appears beneath the top, you can press a wedge of wood and pull the tiny box out of it's current space. Doing so reveals three hidden drawers inside the dovetailed box, the back of the box being a rectangular chamfered panel set in grooves on either side and lifting easily to reveal these drawers. The top of this hidden box is inscribed illegibly. The entire desk rests over robust ogee bracket feet with deep scrolling returns. 17th Century French Antique Desk
Beautiful piece from 17th century France. Frame for mirror can be detached via hand carved wooden screws. Some work was done on one of the leg attachments with Gorilla glue. Not appropriate but fixable, and while mirror is not attached it would be easy to add hardware accessories. Color in pictures is not accurate, wood is a warm maple color and marble on desk top is a wonderful red rock color. Brass hinged lid and escutcheon although no keys for the lock. Early 1800s i would think by the looks of the original brass escutcheon and patina. A Unique William IV Mahogany Partners Desk c.1830-35 Period: William IV Provenance: Unknown Date: c.1830-35 Depth: 36 inches Width: 55 inches Height: 29.5 inches The very unusual partners desk of mahogany veneers having a rounded rectangular top with black leather insert set with two brass outlined slots for Bills and Letters. The right hand pedestal on rollers fitted with three short drawers, the reverse with drawers and the side with dummy drawers, the left hand side with a short frieze drawer, on an unusual wrought iron support, the whole on plinth bases, survives from the Regency to William IV period. The condition is mainly good. And thoroughly loved, with the leather-writing surface is ... moretired but full of character with one or two gauge marks, whilst the mahogany veneers are super quality, good colour and healthy patina with some knocks and markings one would expect from a piece of this standing. There is one crack to the end-facing pedestal which has been filled. We have restored her to an extent, being given a light polish and made mechanically sound with one or two veneers. She is structurally true and has good portability due to sitting on the support castor and rollers. The castor is marked to both sides, one reads‘VR’ with a crown motif, the other side with‘Harcort Bros Patent Birmingham’ We can safely say this is for James Harcourt, Staniforth Street, Birmingham, brassfounder(1816) At the Great Exhibition of 1851 their exhibits included two bell pulls and a vase that were appreciated by the reviewer. The Harcourt Brothers, Harcourts Ltd. 222 Mosley St. Bristol Street) Birmingham B5 were brassfounders and electric lighting equipment suppliers. James Harcourt patented an improvement in the construction of castors in 1819 which helps us cement the date of the desk somewhat. LATE 1700'S ANTIQUE OAK MAHOGANY SLANT FALL DROP FRONT DESK BUREAU SECRETARY
Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. The hardware is a later addition.possibly and most probably changed if and when the figured mahogany veneer ... morewas added in the very early 1800's. The desk is supported by a bracket foot base. Antique Mahogany Secretary Desk & Hutch Circa 1800 w/Keys & Hidden Compartments
I'm selling this beautiful antique secretary made of solid mahogany that I received from a gentleman who said it was in his family for 7 generations and was originally purchased in the Hudson River Valley in New York by his steamboat captain great-great-great-great-great grandfather in approximately 1800. It has 3 hidden compartments and lots of pigeon holes and small drawers. It comes with the keys for the upper hutch. The fold down desk and the small door inside but not the drawers below. It has the original glass, which is wavy and has bubbles in it, in both panels on the left side but not on the right side. One pane is missing on the right side but would be easy enough to replace. Lots of character on this gorgeous old piece. It measures 81 inches high, 47 inches wide and is 23-1/2 inches deep at the bottom. It comes apart in two ... morepieces so the bottom part is 41-1/2 inches high, 47 wide and 23-1/2 deep and the top part is 39-1/2 inches high, 47 inches wide and 12 inches deep.
