This is one of the more rare Bausch& Lomb American Type microscope models. It was only manufactured over just a brief 3-year period from 1889 to 1891. The featured instrument is very similar in design to the B&L“The Model” microscope. But it lacks the rack and pinion focus mechanism and is built upon a horseshoe shaped foot with rectangular pillars instead of the“Y”shaped foot with round pillars that characterized“The Model. This instrument bears the name of the manufacturer in fancy script on the top rear face of the circular stage. Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Please see the accompanying close-up image of this inscription) However, this instrument does not bear a typical serial number. For some unknown reason, Bausch& Lomb did not inscribe serial numbers on their earlier microscopes. Interesting scientific instrument. It is a sound probe. Which apparently incorporates electronic amplification with stethoscope technology. I have to wonder what practical purpose this device would serve, it appears to be more susceptible to mechanical noise on hard hard surfaces and could likely be used for a variety of cases in that regard. For instance isolation the source of engine noise. I am certain there is a mad scientist out there who could put this fantastic invention to good use. I have tested it and it does work. Condition wise it seems to be in fair working order. The tag is a little loose around the edges the box divider has separated, those are the only two flaws that I noted upon examination. Imported and distributed by Ogilvy& Co. 18 Bloomsbury Square. London. The other name on the box is Brady& Martin, Newcastle on Tyne who were the cabinet makers. This is not a toy but a heavy and extremely high quality laboratory instrument. It sits in its own purpose made box which has a hinged lockable door standing 34 cms high x 22 x 19. There are some accessories inside but not the complete set as when it was new. The condition is superb and seems to be totally intact so is obviously in working order.
