This is one of the more rare Bausch& Lomb American Type microscope models. It was only manufactured over just a brief 3-year period from 1889 to 1891. The featured instrument is very similar in design to the B&L“The Model” microscope. But it lacks the rack and pinion focus mechanism and is built upon a horseshoe shaped foot with rectangular pillars instead of the“Y”shaped foot with round pillars that characterized“The Model. This instrument bears the name of the manufacturer in fancy script on the top rear face of the circular stage. Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Please see the accompanying close-up image of this inscription) However, this instrument does not bear a typical serial number. For some unknown reason, Bausch& Lomb did not inscribe serial numbers on their earlier microscopes. Instead, they stamped the serial number of the instrument in the front lip of the floor of the wood case that they normally supplied with the microscope. Fortunately, the Cherry wood case that accompanies this instrument has the serial number stamped into the front floor of the case(see close-up image) The serial number“6890” dates the instrument to the year 1889, which plac

A number 180510 is stamped on top where the ocular goes in. The microscope has four leveling screws as legs. There is a side piece for illuminating a specimen from above which is used for metallurgical work. It has the following oculars: 5X. 6.4X, 10X, 7.5X It has the following objectives: 165 mm TL 8 mm 0.50 16 mm 0.25 165 mm TL 1.9 mm 1.25 oil Imm 165 mm TL 4 mm 0.85 There is a 5th one with no numbers or identification The first four objectives listed are labeled BAUSCH& LOMB OPT.CO. Spencer Binocular microscope Circa 1923(Serial Number 81986) microscope in excellent condition- a collectors piece. This one was truly a cadillac in its day. Has optional monocular tube with ocular. Additional pair of ocular lenses. It has the three objectives, pictured separately each with its own original machined brass storage tube. I am told by a fellow E-bayer that the APO and/or APOCHROMATIC objectives on this scope are far superior to standard achromatic objectives and represent the top of the line. This E-bayer was also kind enough to share a note that this scope is similar to the No. 4 research model listed at the Harvard science museum(Ebay won't let me include the link- sorry) however.
