BEAUTIFUL Antique Queen and Company Vacuum Pump and Bell Jar! Manufactured by the James W. Queen and Company in Philadelphia in the late 19th century. Wooden base. 22″ x 12″ x 2″ with wooden feet. Cast iron. Brass and wooden pump mechanism measuring 24" in height. Heavy glass period bell jar. 9" in diameter and 18" in height. Antique. Scientific. Authentic. A lot of two antique late 19th century bell jars for use with a vacuum pump for demonstration purposes of scientific principles in a classroom or science lab. The visible glass sections alone of the jars measures 9 3/4" tall on one(5" bottom diameter) and 9 1/2" on the other( 4 3/4" bottom diameter) The glass of each has bubbles and waviness and the apparatus on top of each jar is made of brass with its original thin lacquer coating. Condition- excellent and all original with only a couple very small non disfiguring chips to the bottom edges of the jars as typical from use. Up for auction is a NICE ORIGINAL RARE BENJAMIN PIKE 1800'S DOUBLE BARREL VACUUM PUMP MUSEUM PIECE. It measures 16" tall. 17" deep including the handles and 10.25" wide at the base. It is complete except for the glass dome. It appears to also have a nameplate missing on the back. It still creates some vacuum but to function perfectly will probably need the pumps rebuilt. It is marked with"Benj n Pike stamped into the brass. This is a special Double-Barrel Vacuum Pump by Benjamin Pike. Jr. of New York. His pieces are in the collections of Museums, and Universities and seldom are available for sale. Benjamin Pike, Jr. was born in New York City in 1809 and died near Astoria, Long Island in 1864. He won a silver medal at the American Institute Fair held in New York City in 1844. Pike knew his market well. Americans at ... morethat time were establishing numerous schools and colleges and equipping them with instruments for scientific demonstrations. In addition to announcing the latest gadgetry, Benjamin Pike Jr. was an innovative direct marketer- about 150 years before it became in vogue. It has a hand-blown glass bell jar with lots of bubbles. There is a hook inside of the dome, also made of glass. It measures at approx. 29 1/2" tall x 28 1/2" long x 9 3/4 deep. This is a solid, heavy piece. There are places of wood rubbing, mahogany wood chipping, and wear on the metals and cast iron handle. Oxidation and signs of well use on the brass piston casing. It is still in working order and when handle is turned it creates a suction then release. The Scew on side ajusts the amount and also says"pat aplt for" also says this on the metal body right under the handle.
