Fine Georgian Pocket Sikes Hydrometer Joseph Long Burr Walnut Box 1825 Sykes
THIS ITEM IS SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE Description This is an unusually fine quality pocket Sikes hydrometer made by Joseph Long of Little Tower St London. What lifts it above the norm is that it is housed in a lovely burr walnut box instead of the usual plain mahogany examples. It is not only named to the nameplate on the front but also on the thermometer and on the float. Joseph Long was at Little Tower Street from 1821 to 1884 and I believe that the quality of this example puts it towards the early years at this address. As with the'Gerletti' spirit beads I have listed this week this hydrometer is worthy of any collection/museum in the scientific instrument/ breweriana field. It is being sold WITHOUT RESERVE and with a 99p start price. Please do look at my other items as I will combine postage charges etc(see delivery below) Bid now ... moreto avoid disappointment. Measurements Approximately 5"127mm) wide and 2" 51mm) deep and 1 1/2" 38mm) high. Condition Please note that this is an antique item which is 185 years old. The box is in excellent condition with just the loss of the silk covering the lid wadding and some dents to the float. Please refer to the photographs and do not hesitate to email if you have any questions prior to bidding. Delivery The delivery prices quoted are for'signed for' services. I will also combine deliveries should you purchase more than one item to keep your costs down. I do not make any money on postage and packing and regularly subsidize the cost to provide a better level of service. Good luck with your bidding. PLEASE NOTE My next auction for interesting small antique items e.g. silver. Car mascots, scientific tools and instruments, medallions, writing and desktop collectables etc will start on Thursday August 15th to finish on Sunday August 25th. Brass and bone by P. Stevenson of Edinburgh Top of page BARTHOLOMEW SIKES devised a system of alcoholometry which was legalised in Great Britain in 1816 for ascertaining the strength of spirits for revenue purposes and has remained in official use ever since. ... moreHe designed a metal hydrometer and compiled tables for use in conjunction with it. Which, together, provide a simple means of determining the strength of mixtures of alcohol and water. All that has to be done is to float the hydrometer in the sample of which the strength is required, observe the hydrometer reading, take the temperature of the sample and then consult the tables, where, under the temperature and against the hydrometer reading, is found the strength of the spirit. Such a simple and rapid method was not devised in a moment. Indeed, the Excise Department was established in 1643, nearly two hundred years before the adoption of Sikes’s system, and from its inception one of its duties was the collection of taxes levied on spirits. The standard edition is the most common type. The kit includes 1 thermometer. 1 float, 10 weights and 1 case. The box is lined with satin/velvet and thick padding to protect the float and thermometer Please look at all photos& ask all questions BEFORE bidding/buying Not 100% satisfied?
