Antique 19th Century hard paste porcelain sheperd figurine
Offered is a charming antique 19th Century hard paste porcelain figurine of a shepherd carrying a lamb. It is 3 1/2" tall. There are three small flakes off the bottom of the base that I've shown in the pictures and a rough feeling on the edge of his hat that I've also taken a close-up picture of for your evaluation. This is a very nice old piece and the painting on the shepherd's face is very well done. The inside of the bottom is not glazed. A lot of two 19thC hard paste porcelain figurines. Hunting men or gamekeepers in 18thC costume. The figurines are basically the same though differently coloured: crops and pose are identical, some difference are caused by the applied parts like arms and sword. One holds a hare, the other a bird. They are probably made by Conta& Boehme in Pössneck Thüringen Germany, founded in 1790: They are numbered in the style this firm did: I-1348, one with an impressed 33, the other one with a red painted 75, but no shield. We got this at an estate sale years ago and always admired the details of this very old hard paste figurine. Probably dating back to the early 1800s, or even earlier. There is so many details that tell a whole story about this wonderful figure. From her lined face to her hands covered in rags and holding a large walking stick. You can't help but wonder what brought her to this sad state. illness? poverty? or just advanced age. There is a mark on the bottom(see photo) But I can't make it out clearly. It is heavy; 12 ounces for just a 7" high figure. There are no cracks and just a few. Very difficult to find'flea bites' The light areas you see in the photos are just light reflections; the paint is esquisite.
