GERMAN PORCELAIN MEISSEN / DRESDEN STYLE MONKEY BAND ‘CONDUCTOR’ No 693 c 1880
This‘Monkey Band’ figurine is one of a set of four that I am listing in four separate listings this week. They represent models 693. 694, 695 and 696 in this set. This one bears the underglaze incised number‘693’ on the base. I am listing each one separately in order to give collectors the opportunity to fill in any‘gaps’ in their collection of these figures. But, in each case, I have provided one photo showing all four of these lively musicians so that they can be seen together. The four comprise a flautist, a violinist, a trumpeter and a conductor, all made of heavy hard paste porcelain. The original‘Monkey Bands’ were reputedly first produced by the great Meissen factory about 1753-5 and were the result of a commission given to Meissen’s greatest figure modeller. Johann Kaendler who created a 22 piece‘orchestra’ of these wonderful figures, ... moreeach distinguished with marvellous individuality and wittiness in concept. They were immensely popular and much copied by other porcelain factories right through the 19th Century. I have been informed by a kind fellow eBayer(4/2/13) that these figures are from a Kronach factory in Upper Franconia. Germany, belonging to R& E Pech. I have confirmed that the mark appears on page 273 of Ludwig Danckert's invaluable'Directory of European Porcelain' The date is correct. This one is the‘Conductor’ He is extremely well modelled and painted in fine detail. He is conducting with visible enthusiasm! He carries an underglaze‘blue scissors’ mark. I am much indebted. As always, to Mr Geoffery Godden’s superb“Guide to European Porcelain”1993. On page 98 of that book he illustrates the‘scissors’ mark and reveals that it“occurs on late nineteenth century Dresden-type porcelains such as the Monkey Band’which are almost certainly of German origin” The conductor is beautifully painted in rich enamels. Rare Pair of Antique German KPM Porcelain Girl & Boy Sleigh Dresden Figurine
This is a gorgeous pair of large handpainted porcelain figural KPM sleighs! A boy and girl dressed in Royal clothing and both sleighs covered in apprlied porcelain flowers. Beautiful! They are heavy weighted porcelain and each measure approximately 8 inches high by 10 inches wide. Both have some chipping to the applied flowers and leaves and on the boy's sleigh. It looks like there is some yellowing and wear to the paint/glaze. Not readily noticed on display unless you are looking. Overall a gorgeous Victorian pair for the collector! ~ Antique German Figurine ~ This is a very lovely handpainted German porcelain figure with fine modeling. Superb coloring, and exquisite porcelain applied flowers. A beautiful maiden sits atop two decorative tasseled pillows, and she is helping Cupid as he is struggling to climb up next to her. Cupid's bow and arrows are on the ground at their feet, and the woman holds one golden arrow in her hand. The figure is a nice large size measuring 8 1/2" tall by 7" wide. And it is in excellent condition aside from arrow has tip chip and a few tiny nicks to flower petals/leaves, very minor. One peaking over the top of the basket, and one poking his head through the basket. Pigs are not as"pink" as later examples are- they're light pink with dark ears. Realistic"woven" basket with what looks like straw at the top, and touches of g old paint all over the front of the basket. Like many of these early figures. The ba ck is unpainted. You are viewing an antique porcelain piece. Either a candlestick or possibly the base of an oil lamp which holds the font. The top is open(there is tissue stuffed inside) but it obviously had something there at one time or another. I have used a glass candle insert in the past in this area. The piece, I am told, is marked with a Meissen mark(see photos) The numbers"17-316" also appear on the bottom of the piece. It is a heavy, well-made piece, and measures about 11" tall. The modeling of the piece is exquisite. I note a small chip on the rose at top on the front of the piece(by angel's head) and a missing rose or leaf on the back side bottom area. It is, as many know, hard to note all small flaking on porcelain roses, etc. However, any loss to the applied roses and leaves on this one is fairly minor in my opinion. This pre-owned figurine is in very nice condition with no chips. Cracks or signs of restoration that I could find when examining it. It features a ballerina dancer putting on her slippers. Her arms. Legs, neckline, face and hair have a matte finish and her dress has a gloss finish. NOTE: A little bit of wear to the glaze at the tip of the bottom slipper- as pictured She may need a small amount of fine cleaning. But other than that she's gorgeous! Huge German Unterweissbach porcelain and lace Carriage figurine with two dapple white horses, a driver, a beautiful lady riding in the carriage and a footman riding on the back, peeking into the window. A very large piece, it measures 20 1/2" from end to end. 10" tall and 9 1/2" deep(52cm long. 25.5cm tall, 24.2cm deep) It is in excellent overall condition; there are no chips to the porcelain, no repairs, a tiny bit of lace loss on the mens wrist cuffs, some loss to the horses reins(easily replaced) and there is some color wear on the sleeves of the woman's dress. Antique Stamped German Conta Boehme? Porcelain Bisque Girl Piano Baby Figurine
~ Antique German Piano Baby ~ Marked"Germany" on base with symbol that resembles a shield This is a large antique German bisque piano baby figurine that is from a deceased relative's China cabinet from the New Orleans area. I am not an expert on all the manufacturers of that era. But I do know that the authentic ones are marked or stamped with a symbol, crest or shield. This one has a stamp and also reads"Germany" on the base, while many others listed on eBay do not. So this one is not"probably" the real deal. IT IS. It is in the style of Conta& Boehme( This baby girl has golden tresses and is holding a cup. The era of this doll falls between the 1850s-1900. She has great, even pastel coloring and big dark-blue intaglio eyes with defined highlights, rosy cheeks with a hint of dimples, and an open smiling ... moremouth with row of molded upper teeth; blonde hair with pointy curls framing the happy face; bare feet with upturned toes; she wears a yellow embossed dress with gold highlights with blue lace ruffle trim and fuchsia pink bows at the shoulders, and she is holding a lavender-pink-colored cup. She is in overall fair condition. Because she is missing a little part of her index finger on her right hand. There is also a hairline on underside of base that slightly and very faintly extends up the bottom sides of the figurine(about 1/2-1/4 inch, please see photo) The hair line is smooth. I do not have the tip of the finger. PLEASE SEE PICS of underside and edge of base. Neither the hair line or little chip next to it is visible for purposes of display. I do not know enough about antique porcelain to know if the missing finger can be repaired/replaced, but I am guessing that this is possible if someone chooses to do so. There are a few scattered specks of spotty discoloration from age, the only ones really noticeable are on her toes. Conta Boehme shield mark to base and what looks like the numbers 1441 on each and a 0. They are in excellent condition the only thing I can see is a firing crack to the left side of her dress. Quite heavy and great quality pieces. Approximately 6 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide at the base. They could also use a good cleaning. I will leave that to their new owner. Antique German Porcelain Volkstedt Dresden Lady Blackamoor Lamp Figurine Figure
This is a a beautiful and quite rare to find figural lamp created by the Muller Volkstedt factory of Germany. A lady is sitting at her vanity powdering her face as a young boy puts her shoe on her foot. It is a rare example created by this factory and dates 1920s-40s. The lady has a tiny chip on the end of her pointer finger and the boy has a broken thumb. Minor on display. There is some lace chipping to her gown as well. I did not test the lamp to see if it works however the cord is intact. Measures 8 1/2 inches high by 5 1/2 inches wide. Very special piece for the collector! HUGE Antique German Sitzendorf Porcelain Group Chariot Carriage Dresden Figurine
~ Antique German Group Figurine ~ Gorgeous. Huge antique chariot figure! Circa late 19th century. This fantastic, very large figural depicts two beautiful women riding in the back of a chariot with another woman sitting in the front behind two winged griffins that are pulling the chariot. This spectacular piece has outstanding modeling, exquisite detail, gorgeous porcelain applied flowers, fabulous handpainted florals, and two wheels that are hinged and actually work! It measures a huge 19" from front to back and is 14 1/2" tall! It is in overall excellent condition with just a few minor chips: the seated woman has the thumb chipped off her right hand. The maiden wearing the hat has the tip chipped off of the scarf coming off the back of the hat, there are a few flowers with minor nicks, and there is some minor gold/age wear. This is an adorable german bisquepiano baby figurine depicting a little girl sleeping in her high chair. She is so cute with her little white with red lined stocking feet dangling from under her little purple dress. She is wearing a red bonnet on her head and her dress is dotted with little gold dots. In excellent condition with only a few of her dots missing. Approximately 4 3/4 inches tall. Bottom is 2 1/2 inches wide. Marked on inside bottom as shown.
