TALL 'WOE IS ME' PIERROT FIGURINE WITH GUITAR; GERMANY CIRCA 1920S
This is a tall(nearly a foot high) Pierrot porcelain figurine with guitar and a“woe is me” pose. Pierrot was a character in the Commedia del Arte series. The figure is in fine condition and dates from the 1 st third of the 1900s. The manufacturer mark is stamped on the bottom– the Porzellarfabrik Hertwig& Co which was founded in Thuringia Germany in 1864. The figure is ~11 ¾ inches high and slightly longer than 4 inches at the base. A similar figure was sold at a german auction severl years ago for ~$190; my price is lower than this.

Antique Ginori Figurine Circa 1737
My father bought 4 Ginori figurines at the Ginori factory in Florence. Italy during World War II. He was first told that since they were originals they couldn't be sold. After finally agreeing to sell them, he was asked to come back later to give them time to have their artists do detailed sketches of them. This little gypsy boy is one of them. He is marked with a crown over Ginori and a star. According to Kovels' Dictionary of Marks Pottery and Porcelain 1650 to 1850, the marks indicates he was made in 1737. She was created in Germany in the late 1950's since she has the green mark on her base and is numbered 1665. A high gloss glaze completes her Blanc de Chine complexion. The figurine or statue itself measures 18" tall and the base measures 8 1/2" ... morein diameter. The wooden base measures 13" in diameter and adds 1" onto the height. It is in good condition with no chips or cracks. There is a round impressed mark that reads"France d' Art" and has the letter L in it with a figure of a woman. I've researched this mark but haven't been able to find it. Since the piece is attached to the wooden base. I can't read the mark on the bottom. I can't say how it is attached to the wooden base, but I see no screws, etc. so must be glued to it.

Prev Stop Play Next I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to finally have this world famous otter in my hands after a successful trip to a New York auction! I love European porcelain. And I especially love the initiators, the brilliant creators of the very first porcelain to be made in Europe, the one and only Meissen Porcelain in Meissen, Germany. Of course there's more. Not only is this an exquisite piece of Meissen figural porcelain. But it was created by one of the greatest porcelain Master Sculptors of all time, Max Esser. Max Esser was born on May 16th. 1885 and went on to achieve a level of master craftsmanship in the field of porcelain and stoneware sculpturing unparalleled to this day. He studied with the famous August Gaul at the Academy in Berlin, and continued ... morehis artistic pursuits at the Black Burger Workshops for Porcelain Art in Unterweilsbach before joining Meissen in 1920. By 1924 he was the Director of the Master's Studio at Meissen. In 1926. Max Esser completed a masterpiece in Bottger Stoneware, calling him simply"The Otter" The attention to detail, the pose, the expression on"The Otter's" face took the breath away from anyone even slightly interested in the decorative arts. circa 1890s Porcelain Pottery Figurine Germany American Miniature Children Old
I am currently cleaning out my grandmother's estate. She was a collector of fine quality antiques and she had this little solid pottery figurine in her curio cabinet. I thought it was adorable so I decided to list it. Please let me describe to you what I see about this beautiful piece. I see a very tiny minor flaw on the bottom of the piece. I am going to consider this as a tiny chip but it is really hard to tell because they made these pieces unfinished or unpolished on the bottom. If this bothers you please do not bid but look at it in the photographs. There is a line on the base that looks like a crack. It is not a crack. It is the way this piece was made. I looked at this carefully under a magnifying glass. I think this piece is adorable. I think it is an old piece. An antique piece. My grandmother had fine items in her curio cabinet ... moreand this was one of her pieces she treasured enough to display. Thank you for looking very closely at the photographs.
