The rate of twin births is one of the highest in the world. 45 of every 1,000 births(in the United States it is 28.9 of every 1000) There is also a high mortality rate; half of the twins die shortly after birth. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. Crack in one side of head and face, Additional Information: This well used sculpture is out of the ordinary when measured to the mainstream of Dogon art. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elderâs house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as âgoruâ. The figure has a manâs beard and a womanâs breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. This carving exemplifies Azande carving style with the elongated body and short legs. Her belly button and genetailia portrude, indicating her fertility. Her round and robust coiffure is also indicative of the hand of a talented Azande carver. Among the Azande(Zande) figures like this are known as Yanda, served to represent ancestral or protective spirits who looked over the members of an Azande cult known as Mani(This cult was also shared by close neighbors the Mangbetu) The Mani cult enrolled women and men and worked to assure health and to secure wealth and prosperity for the cult member. These charming figures takes their color from the magical application of roots. Plants, bark and seeds called Libele by the Azande. Local scarification patterns worn by the people are also carved onto the face and thighs and genitals of the figure. Additional Information: This well carved figure of a woman is beautify carved with a subtle expression and composed stance with short straight legs. This is a typical Tabwa figure and would stand dramatically in a collection. Tabwa figures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. They are also a high form of body art or ornamentation. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of kulemba that reflect aesthetics. This particular figure offers up a bit of mystery. Though she is marked Japan and shows a styling of definite 1940s evening wear. We can't quite determine her original use or purpose. The piece has evidence of being cemented to something at some point but that history has been lost to us. We can say this: The piece is very well done, with hand-painted accents and details and wonderful figure and form. We have not been able to determine if the flowers are applied celluloid or hand painted(see photos) but think they may be painted. This piece is a first quality piece and made of the very finest quality porcelain being produced at this time. The mold is that of a lady reading a book. The figure is decorated in the Japanese Aesthetic called Chinoiserie with deep glazes and hand painted flowers.
