Antique MOCHA POTTERY & Dipped Wares 1770-1939 American English Folk Ceramics
Mocha and related dipped wares. 1770-1939" By Jonathan Rickard. Published by the University Press of New England: 2006. DISCUSSION: This is a colorful explosion of a book. Packed with beautiful photographs that vividly capture the colors and wild designs on this distinctive pottery. But it's not all photos- author Jonathan Rickard provides a mighty and solid text to back up the illustrations, exploring the history, makers and styles of these ceramics in England, America and France. Long thought of as a Victorian ceramic, Rickard shows that the style actually dates from the late 18th century. There are many chapters exploring the various patterns and decorating techniques, and the book finishes off with a chapter on the potters and potteries of Mocha and their marks. An exuberant, important study of an under-documented type of pottery. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5”x11” 178 pages, profusely illustrated in color and black& white; dust jacket; bibliography. ANCIENT ANTIQUE ISLAMIC POTTERY FROM SYRIA MIDDLE EASTERN CERAMICS
Raqqa Revisited: Ceramics of Ayyubid Syria" By Marilyn Jenkins-Madina. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. DISCUSSION: The city of Raqqa. Situated on the Euphrates River in present-day Syria, had its first Islamic flowering in the late 8th century, when it was the residence of the legendary Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid. Raqqa experienced a resurgence during the late 12th and early 13th centuries, but was destroyed in 1265. Little is mentioned about Raqqa in Muslim sources after its medieval renaissance, but interest in the city was kindled in the West at the end of the 19th century, when curiosity about the Islamic world was inspired by travel to the Middle East and by the vast travel literature that came out of the region. Interest was also fueled by the translation into French and English of the Arabic ... moreliterary classic The Thousand and One Nights, in which Harun al-Rashid was a central character. As this collection of stories was becoming a best seller in the West. Ceramic objects were being brought out from Raqqa that dealers and auction houses were connecting to this very caliph, and a buying spree for the ware ensued. Among the wealthy collectors who developed a passion for these objects were two important donors to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Louisine and Horace Havemeyer, and eventually a large number of ceramic objects from their collection were given to the Museum, helping to make the Metropolitan’s holdings of this ware the world’s most important. This volume explores the ceramic objects unearthed in Raqqa in the first quarter of the 20th century; Museum Curator Emerita of Islamic Art Marilyn Jenkins-Madina describes the dramatic journey of these ceramics from their discovery in Raqqa to the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum. ANTIQUE AMERICAN ENGLISH BRITISH ROCKINGHAM POTTERY WARE CERAMICS
Rockingham Ware in American Culture. 1830-1930. Reading Historical Artifacts" By Jane Perkins Claney. Published by the University Press of New England in 2004. DISCUSSION: Rockingham ware was an inexpensive brown-glazed ceramic that was ubiquitous in America from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth century. Popular as an antique today. It is regularly sold at venues ranging from flea markets to antique shows. Despite its prevalence in American life for nearly a century and its continued presence as a collector’s item, little has been written on this subject of vast interest to collectors, museum curators, historians, and archaeologists. Jane Perkins Claney has written the first and only full-scale study of Rockingham ware to consider not just its history as a manufactured object but also its role in domestic life. Both an ... moreartifact study and a case study in material culture interpretation. This volume offers a totally comprehensive approach to the study of Rockingham ware and serves as a model for future studies of similar objects. Following a chapter on her methods of identifying and interpreting historical evidence. Claney describes the physical characteristics of Rockingham ware and its production history. She places Rockingham ware within the context of nineteenth-century design and discusses its"Americanization" by U.S. manufacturers. Turning next to usage and meaning, Claney shows how certain Rockingham-ware vessels were used in the expression and maintenance of cultural identity and the enactment of social roles. Exploring gender and class ramifications, she demonstrates that although the ceramic was used at all social-class levels and in all types of communities from urban to rural, the choice of vessel forms and decoration differed markedly. Rockingham-ware teapots, for example, were favored by working-class women and rarely appeared in middle-class homes, while middle-class men living in cities formed the market for Rockingham-ware pitchers decorated with hunting scenes. UCAGCO actually means United China and Glass Company. Its offices were based in New Orleans and New York. Ucagco was primarily a distributor of dinnerware and glassware. They were the distributor of many Japanese china patterns during the early 1950's. United China& Glass Co. Inc. Better known as UCAGCO, dating back to 1850. Founded by Abe Mayer and originally called Abe Mayer& Co. the importer did business throughout the Southeast U.S. as well as Central and South America. It wasn't ... moreuntil the 30s that the company took on the official trademark of UCAGCO and began expanding overseas. In fact, after the war, the company's agent in Japan, S.A. Stolaroff signed the very first contract allowing imports from Japan. A talented ceramic designer himself, Stolaroff worked alongside many Japanese potteries to lead the company's line of ceramics. In 1956, UCAGCO was sold to Sammons Enterprises and in 1962, Stolaroff, who had become the company's president, retired. I do my best to describe each item and its condition. This is a vintage piece. Vintage Heath Ceramics Pottery USA Soup Bowl or Salad Bowl, possibly second
You are bidding on the pictured pre-owned Heath Ceramics rice or soup bowl. Color is as pictured. Pinkish on the inside with the rim turning toward a light green and the outside a metallic brownish/greenish tint-diff icult to describe and not easy to capture with the camera. I took some of the pics with flash and others without. Size is 5 1/2" across at the top. Bottom is 2 1/2" The bowl is 2 3/4" tall. Most likely this bowl is a"seconds" item because of what looks like a crack near the rim(see photo) But this is not a crack, just a blemish. I have only one of these bowls and want to sell it to somebody who needs one. I have the Heath Moonstone series and this and the also-listed saucer are the only o dd-balls. And they need to go. HEATH Pottery/Ceramics Dark Cobalt Blue Saucer 4 Available
4 HEATH Dark Cobalt Blue Saucer's Pre-Owned The photo is as close as I can get to show actual color! No DAMAGE! Edith Heath(1911–2005) founded Heath Ceramics in 1948 after her solo pottery show at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor. She was a talented ceramicist with a great respect for craft and material. And a strong point of view on the product that her company would make— simple, good things for good people. Edith's passion for ceramics led to advances in clay and glaze development. Which secured Heath its unique place in ceramics history. Her pieces were designed to enjoy a single kiln firing, at a lower than normal temperature, thus saving energy, while remarkably producing a durable and non-porous product. This Great Depression mentality motivated her to design and produced long-lasting products with integrity, in a responsible ... moremanner. Today. Over sixty years later, Heath Ceramics is considered among the most enduring examples of mid-century design. Found in restaurants, homes and museums worldwide, our name is synonymous with simple, functional and thoughtfully designed tableware and tile. As well, many of Edith’s original pieces live in the permanent collections of museums such as the MOMA and LACMA. Our iconic tableware and tile are still made in small runs on the premises of our Sausalito. California factory, just as they have been since 1948. We employ fifty craftspeople to produce high quality, durable pieces that blur the line between everyday objects and family heirlooms. Thanks for looking! Good Luck& Happy Ebay
