Antique German Schafer Vater Elephant bisque shaving mug figurine
This auction is for antique German bisque Schafer and Vater figural elephant shaving mug. It is well molded with nice relief and detail. It has a cameo of ballerina on each side and figural elephant handles. The condition is very good undamaged. There is only minor paint wear on the gold. It has star and crown mark along with G814 incised on the bottom and measures 3 ½” tall and 3” across. On Feb-23-13 at 17:29:51 PST. A beautiful Schafer Vater creation executed in delicate porcelain and glazed a soft pink. This antique figurine shows two Japanese girls, one with an outstretched, graphic folding fan and the other playing a stringed instrument while she dances. In great condition except that at some point in its life the tip of the stringed instrument was lost. This beautiful German porcelain statue is about 5 inches tall and 5 inches wide. Figure is a grotesquely comical monk in a brown robe. With a row of small holes across the sides and top of his bald head. Holes fit the smaller size wooden matches- shorter and narrower than big wooden kitchen matches- which were commonly used for lighting cigarettes. Pipes, cigars, candles, and oil lamps in the years before paper matchbooks were widely distributed. There are two or three ... morespots with small shrinkage lines from firing of the clay(see photo second from bottom) These are not cracks- they are from surface drying during the making of the piece; they do not go through to the inside of the hollow figure. Maker of a vast number of novelty items, the German porcelain manufactory of Schafer& Vater is well known for their sometimes risqué humor that they often injected into everyday utilitarian items. Here we have a gentleman in old fashioned bathing attire cradling his true love on his lap in the ocean waves. Their expressions indicate pure joy at the chance to frolic and cuddle whilst enjoying some fun in the sun! In true S& V form. Antique Schafer & Vater Decanter - A Little Scotch Bagpipe Player
We are pleased to offer this an impressive Schafer and Voter decanter. The colors and comical subject are typical of the whimsy found with the S& V pieces made in Germany in the early 1900's. The chubby Scotsman has rosy cheeks and slightly bowed legs. The top of the bagpipe is missing. The S& V crown mark is not visible but at the bottom edge of the back it is stamped with a 4 digit number. It is in excellent condition. Free of chips. Cracks, scratches, crazing, discoloring, and any other kind of damages. This Figurine would make a beautiful display piece and will make a great addition to your collection.
