Art and Love in Renaissance Italy” Edited by Andrea Bayer. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2009. DISCUSSION: Art and Love in ... moreRenaissance Italy offers a fascinating look at art objects created to celebrate love and marriage. Betrothal. Marriage, the birth of a child— these were the moments of utmost significance in the lives of Italian men and women in the Renaissance. All were marked by celebrations carried out with the greatest possible degree of magnificence, with extraordinary objects commissioned or exchanged as gifts. Marriage and childbirth gifts ranged from maiolica, glassware, and jewelry to birth trays, musical instruments, and nuptial portraits. Bonds of love of another sort were represented in erotic drawings and prints. From these precedents, an increasingly inventive approach to subjects of love and marriage culminated in paintings by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, including Giulio Romano, Lorenzo Lotto, and Titian. Edited by Andrea Bayer, Curator in the Museum’s Department of European Paintings, this important volume is the first to examine the entire range of works to which Renaissance rituals of love and marriage gave rise; it makes a major contribution to our understanding of Renaissance art in its broader cultural context. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x12” 376 pages, color and black& white illustrations, dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: Minor wear. But otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding. OVERSEAS BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Our International shipping charges are based on the weight. When boxed for shipping, of each book-please check the postage chart for the cost of shipping to your country. Antique MOCHA POTTERY & Dipped Wares 1770-1939 American English Folk Ceramics
Mocha and related dipped wares. 1770-1939" By Jonathan Rickard. Published by the University Press of New England: 2006. DISCUSSION: This is a colorful explosion of a book. Packed with beautiful photographs that vividly capture the colors and wild designs on this distinctive pottery. But it's not all photos- author Jonathan Rickard provides a mighty and solid text to back up the illustrations, exploring the history, makers and styles of these ceramics in England, America and France. Long thought of as a Victorian ceramic, Rickard shows that the style actually dates from the late 18th century. There are many chapters exploring the various patterns and decorating techniques, and the book finishes off with a chapter on the potters and potteries of Mocha and their marks. An exuberant, important study of an under-documented type of pottery. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5”x11” 178 pages, profusely illustrated in color and black& white; dust jacket; bibliography. ANTIQUE CHINESE BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN -CHINESE CERAMICS THE INFLUENCED THE WEST
Blue and White Chinese Porcelain and Its Impact on the Western World. Catalogue of an Exhibition” By John Carswell. Published by the David and Alfred Smart Gallery. University of Chicago, in 1985. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The catalog to a loan exhibition of important and representative Chinese blue& white porcelains. With essays by John Carswell, Edward A. Maser and Jean McClure Mudge. The influence of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain on the pottery of the Near East and Europe is obvious, but less evident are the reasons why it should have had such a powerful effect on such widely diverse cultures. It could be argued that it was simply the technical perfection of the porcelain body that made such a strong impression, but this does not explain why blue-and-white continued to be so popular over so long a period ... moreof time and such a wide geographical area. Somehow, the porcelain became linked in the eye of the beholder with its blue-and-white decoration, and it was the synthesis of the two which exercised its universal attraction. A primary aim of this exhibition is to present the Chinese blue-and-white side by side with its imitations, and the catalog is intended to serve both as a detailed record and also as an extension of this concept” DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 8.5”x10.5” 184 pages, black& white illustrations. ANTIQUE RENAISSANCE ITALIAN ART, CERAMICS, BRONZES, GLASS, METALWORK, More!
Art and Love in Renaissance Italy” Edited by Andrea Bayer. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2009. DISCUSSION: Art and Love in Renaissance Italy offers a fascinating look at art objects created to celebrate love and marriage. From these precedents, an increasingly inventive approach to subjects of love and ... moremarriage culminated in paintings by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, including Giulio Romano, Lorenzo Lotto, and Titian. Edited by Andrea Bayer, Curator in the Museum’s Department of European Paintings, this important volume is the first to examine the entire range of works to which Renaissance rituals of love and marriage gave rise; it makes a major contribution to our understanding of Renaissance art in its broader cultural context. ANCIENT ANTIQUE ISLAMIC POTTERY FROM SYRIA MIDDLE EASTERN CERAMICS
Raqqa Revisited: Ceramics of Ayyubid Syria" By Marilyn Jenkins-Madina. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. DISCUSSION: The city of Raqqa. Situated on the Euphrates River in present-day Syria, had its first Islamic flowering in the late 8th century, when it was the residence of the legendary Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid. Raqqa experienced a resurgence during the late 12th and early 13th centuries, but was destroyed in 1265. Little is mentioned about Raqqa in Muslim sources after its medieval renaissance, but interest in the city was kindled in the West at the end of the 19th century, when curiosity about the Islamic world was inspired by travel to the Middle East and by the vast travel literature that came out of the region. Interest was also fueled by the translation into French and English of the Arabic ... moreliterary classic The Thousand and One Nights, in which Harun al-Rashid was a central character. As this collection of stories was becoming a best seller in the West. Ceramic objects were being brought out from Raqqa that dealers and auction houses were connecting to this very caliph, and a buying spree for the ware ensued. Among the wealthy collectors who developed a passion for these objects were two important donors to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Louisine and Horace Havemeyer, and eventually a large number of ceramic objects from their collection were given to the Museum, helping to make the Metropolitan’s holdings of this ware the world’s most important. This volume explores the ceramic objects unearthed in Raqqa in the first quarter of the 20th century; Museum Curator Emerita of Islamic Art Marilyn Jenkins-Madina describes the dramatic journey of these ceramics from their discovery in Raqqa to the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum. ANTIQUE AMERICAN ENGLISH BRITISH ROCKINGHAM POTTERY WARE CERAMICS
Rockingham Ware in American Culture. 1830-1930. Reading Historical Artifacts" By Jane Perkins Claney. Published by the University Press of New England in 2004. DISCUSSION: Rockingham ware was an inexpensive brown-glazed ceramic that was ubiquitous in America from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth century. Popular as an antique today. It is regularly sold at venues ranging from flea markets to antique shows. Despite its prevalence in American life for nearly a century and its continued presence as a collector’s item, little has been written on this subject of vast interest to collectors, museum curators, historians, and archaeologists. Jane Perkins Claney has written the first and only full-scale study of Rockingham ware to consider not just its history as a manufactured object but also its role in domestic life. Both an ... moreartifact study and a case study in material culture interpretation. This volume offers a totally comprehensive approach to the study of Rockingham ware and serves as a model for future studies of similar objects. Following a chapter on her methods of identifying and interpreting historical evidence. Claney describes the physical characteristics of Rockingham ware and its production history. She places Rockingham ware within the context of nineteenth-century design and discusses its"Americanization" by U.S. manufacturers. Turning next to usage and meaning, Claney shows how certain Rockingham-ware vessels were used in the expression and maintenance of cultural identity and the enactment of social roles. Exploring gender and class ramifications, she demonstrates that although the ceramic was used at all social-class levels and in all types of communities from urban to rural, the choice of vessel forms and decoration differed markedly. Rockingham-ware teapots, for example, were favored by working-class women and rarely appeared in middle-class homes, while middle-class men living in cities formed the market for Rockingham-ware pitchers decorated with hunting scenes. For much of this time, and after, Helen Ling was a dealer in Chinese ceramics. Vintage Sierra-Vista Ceramics Antique Phone Cookie Jar ~ Pasadena, CA. c.1942
This is a charming Antique Phone Cookie Jar that was made c.1942 in Pasadena. California by Sierra-Vista Ceramics. It is a great example of California pottery. This is an early example of this cookie jar, as the later ones have a patent number on the bottom. It measures approx. 11 1/2" high x 7 1/2" deep x 7' wide. The bottom says, Sierra-Vista Ceramics, Pasadena, Calif, and is partially glazed over. This vintage cookie jar would make an awesome addition to any collection. And would make a great gift, too! The pictures above show the condition of the actual item you will receive, as I don't use stock photography. This cookie jar is in wonderful condition for its approx. 70 years of age. Upon very close inspection there is normal crazing throughout the piece and one small chip on the rim which is hidden by the lid. Other ... morethan that. There are no significant chips, dents, scratches, marks or stains that I can see. The overall impression is definitely, Wow! While I have done my best to accurately describe this item. Please keep in mind that antiques and vintage items inevitably show their age in many ways. which just adds to their beauty! I will very carefully ship this Vintage Cookie Jar to you via USPS Parcel Select. I'll be sure to send you a follow-up message containing a Tracking Number after I ship! Thank you for bidding!

ANTIQUE CHINESE CERAMICS SCULPTURE ANTIQUES - GRANTHAM (MUNTHE) 1929 ESSAYS
Porcelain Pagodas and Palaces of Jade. Musings of an Old Collector” By A.E. Grantham. Published in New York by E.P. Dutton and Company in 1929. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A rather poetic series of musings on various aspects of the history and artisanship of antique Chinese ceramics and jades. Bronzes, silks, glass and enamels, by one of the more interesting figures of her collecting period. Alexandra Etheldred Grantham. Born in 1867, was widowed when her first husband, Captain Frederick Grantham, a lawyer who had traveled extensively in the East and was an expert on“eastern philosophies” joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers and was promptly killed on the Western Front in 1915. In 1919 she married General Johan Wilhelm Norman Munthe of Norway, a cavalryman who had emigrated to China in 1887. General Munthe was an avid ... morecollector of Chinese works of arts, and his collection included porcelain, paintings, costumes, and statues in bronze and marble, much of it purchased during the dissolution of the Qing Dynasty. He later sold the collection to the young Los Angeles Museum of Art, a sale that became controversial when the contents of the collection were condemned by some authorities and supported by others. After some decades of turmoil, the collection was transferred to Norway’s Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum, which seems quite happy with it. Sinology apparently ran in the family- Alexandra’s second son. Sir Alexander Grantham, served as the Royal Governor of Hong Kong from 1947 to 1958. Alexandra Grantham wrote other books on the East, including Pencil Speakings from Peking(1918) The Wisdom of Akhnaton(1920) Hills of Blue, a picture-roll of Chinese history from far beginnings to the death of Chien Lung(1927) and A Manchu Monarch; an interpretation of Chia Ch'ing(1934) DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 7”x8.5” 210 pages, 28 black& white illustrations on 25 plates.
