Hand crafted of solid walnut about 1840, this clean lined desk is very pleasing. The finish is waxed and buffed. This is a late 19th century Tiger Oak Side-by-Side Secretary Desk/ Book Case. It is in excellent antique condition overall and loaded with details. The tiger striping feature in the oak is amazing throughout. There is an open upper shelf backed by a shaped beveled mirror. Below the open shelf. On the left, is a four shelf book case with three adjustable shelves and a curved glass door. On the right is a smaller storage compartment with a leaded beveled glass door. Below that is a drop down door that becomes the desk top when opened and reveals five cubbies and a central drawer. Below that are three larger drawers. The drop down and the three large drawers all have locks. All of the locks work and the key is present. Flanking all of this is a pair of Roman columns topped by Ionic capitals that hold up a canopy with an ogee shaped facing edge. ... moreThe two front feet are Empire style scrolls. Antique 1800's Secretary Desk Dresser Drawers Crystal Handles Secret Compartment
Up for sale is an antique Secretary Desk with drawers from the 1800's. Heavy. Solid piece of wood furniture. Needs to be refinished and have handles tightened. I don't think the handles are original and it might have been on casters at one time. Nice clean design. I was told there is a secret compartment in the desk. We ... moreare always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we replaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. Here is a very well cared for and in mostly original condition with original hardware and original finish and art work of painted cupids and landscapes throughout. And these painted cupids/landscapes are on a slightly raised. Built up surface which, when complimented with the gold paint, sets off well well lit dim or full light. Secretary at one time was modified with two lighting fixtures that are working in the upper section. Lower section was modified, floor has a plywood floor. Small wood loss on knee of leg(pictured) but in general, in outstanding condition for it's age. Unique, lavish embellishments, beautifully conceived and created. Moore. Which were the type used by Thomas Barton, and is most likely from his workshop. Hinges are dated sept. 27, 1843. Domed. Hinged wooden box has brass straps and key/lock. 6-1/2" high. 9-3/4" wide. felted bottom. Inside box is wooden compartments for letters. Stationery, etc. plus a hidden compartment under the pen holder. Includes original glass ink well, and two fountain pens. This item comes from a Connecticut estate. Walnut with matched flame burl panels. The finish is in excellent condition on this American made antique. There are shrinkage separations for character, see photos. The pull out desk is lined with contrasting curly or"birdseye" maple. The writing surface is natural saddle leather. Tiny drawers inside have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms, two also have false bottoms with secret drawers. The removable bookcase has wavy glass mirrors that appear original. This is a antique Eastlake style Victorian Oak roll top secretary cylinder desk that dates from the late 1800s. Made from solid oak(NO VENEER) and in very good condition with some light scratches and rubs from age and use. Measures 42 1/4" tall. 34 1/8" wide and 21 1/2" deep. A nice space saver desk. All drawers slide in and out good and the slide out writing desk top slides in and out very good as well.Appears to have been refinished at one point in time and the handles are not original to the desk. Has turned legs with a slant front desk top that lifts up and a secretary style top with doors that open and cubbies inside. Not sure of history of this piece. We obtained it from an estate sale in Johnston County, North Carolina. One of the most interesting thing about this desk is that in the upper corner of the right door there is a piece of paper taped inside that lists the presidents of the United States and has 24 of them with Woodrow Wilson being the last one and the date listed is 1893. This piece looks like perhaps the top may have been added later, not sure, and also where the slant top is looks like it was altered at one time as well. An amazing piece, all pegged. Here is an terrific mid-late 19th century flame mahogany column step back secretary with fold out desk. Turned legs and glass door bookcase or storage& display cabinet above and three large functional bureau drawers below. I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. We are pleased to be offering today this true Victorian burl walnut secretary bookcase desk that dates from the Eastlake era of the 1870s to 1880s. This desk is truly Eastlake as it has the circular dove tail that was used for a short period of time and really pin points the date range of the desk. It came out of a pretty nice estate on the east coast. It appears to have been refinished years ago in a medium walnut stain finish. It has all the hardware intact. All the burl walnut panels are intact. The only thing we did was replace the felt on the pull out tray as the other one was stained. The desk comes with the original wavy glass on the bookcase glass doors top. Three adjustable shelves that appear to be true original shelves, the doors have burl panels on all four sides with ... morerosette covers and even comes with a key. It has a crown molded top, beautiful burl walnut center and the pull tray. The base cabinet sports three graduated drawers with the circular round Eastlake dove tail and carved columns coming down both sides and lots of burl walnut. The overall size is 40 inches at the widest point, 23 inches deep, 31 inches high to the writing surface and 87 inches high overall. One thing I would like to add is that these desks usually have white wood sides or non walnut sides, but this one is truly all walnut as you can see in the numerous pictures. The original backboards are all in place. The desk is a nice original desk. The more I look at it, it appears like they just put a clear coat of shellac on it to brighten it up back years ago. Its interior has three adjustable original maple shelves, maple back boards. Both doors have wavy glass panels, lock with escutcheons, no key. The secretary case has a walnut slant drop front desk(with new replacement maple boards writing support. The cubbyhole has two burl walnut fronted drawers. The long drawers below have gutta percha pulls. Furniture measures 8"1" 97" tall by 3'9" 45" wide by 21" deep, the drop shelf writing surface 31-1/2" wide by 17-1/2" deep. Offered here is an excellent antique 19th century English secretary desk. This desk is in very good antique condition. It stands 87" high. Is 44" wide at the widest point and 22" deep. Each side of the base is built with a single 22" mahogany board. The desk features an interior fitted with 6 small drawers, a locking(key included) door interior compartment, and flanking that, 2"hidden" vertical pull out cash and document compartments which are disguised as books. These have actual leather bindings labeled in gold ROWE'S WORKS 1 and ROWE'S WORKS 2. Please see photos. The base houses 4 graduated drawers and the pull outs to support the desk writing surface. This desk is solid and stable. This desk. As is the case with all truly old furniture, does have some condition issues. These are the following: One ... morepane of the multi paned glass doors has been replaced on one door. There is a split on one side of the desk base. Please see photos. There is a repair to the lower exterior right corner of the fall front. One leg was repaired. I believe that the hardware was replaced many years ago. This is a really well built secretary desk/bookcase. Nice heavy oak. Sawtooth shelf brackets. Knapp dovetailing in the drawers dates the piece between 1870 and 1900. The smaller mirror is bevelled. The pulls are all a nice heavy brass. The condition is excellent. The cabinet is 81 inches tall. 55 inches wide and 17 inches deep. There are six skeleton locks. But no key. The cabinet on the upper left has a mirror on the back wall. There are two oak shelves that can be adjusted with the sawtooth oak bracket(see photo) It is 27 inches wide 45 inches tall and 9.5 inches deep. The two drawers on the lower left are 8 inches tall. 27 inches wide and 9 inches deep. The drop front desk lid is 18 inches tall and 23 inches wide. Inside the desk ar cubby hole and a small drawer. Being offered from estate of an avid antiques collector. Who traveled with internationally esteemed collectors and received items or advice from them, is this impressive secretary with glass hutch. In overall excellent condition, with some issues to note below. Measures 93" high x 45-1/4" wide x 23" deep overall. The hutch itself is 47" high x 43" wide x 13" deep. See photos zoomed for details and verify condition. The issues to note are: thin. Antique glass is intact but three panes have minor cracks in corners; the desk area's leather surface was removed. Is gone; the brass handles appear replacements. Not original(top 2 have loose hoops) there are no keys if intended to have them. The back panels appear to be the same wood as seen from the front. Wood: tiger maple and secondary woods(butternut) Original hardware Dimensions: 55 1/2" x 34" x 14 1/2" Markings/Signatures: None Description: An oversized postmaster desk of tiger maple and secondary butternut woods with original hardware. The desk has mail and letter slots. Drawers, cubbyholes, security elements, and panel doors. The piece has wooden knobs on the lower drawers and security locks on the upper panel doors with interior shelves. The cornice is oversized and enhances the overall design of the piece.
