Time-Life The Emergence of Man Series– Life Before Man. CONDITION: Excellent. Light shelf wear to covers. Otherwise it looks like the book has never really ... morebeen read except perhaps flipped through once or twice. Pages are pristine; clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 160 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1972) The“Emergence of Man” series was released in the mid-1970’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a unive

ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT GUSTAV STICKLEY FURNITURE -STEPHEN GRAY COLLECTION
At Home With Gustav Stickley. Arts& Crafts from the Stephen Gray Collection” Edited by Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser& Linda H. Roth. Published by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art& the University Press of New Enland in 2008. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: During his first years as an Arts and Crafts furniture maker. From about mid-1900 to early 1904, Gustav Stickley and his designers created the most significant cabinetwork his firm would ever produce. For the most part made of quarter-sawn American oak, this furniture was substantial, subtly proportioned, essentially rectilinear, and built using traditional joinery-for instance, tenon and key, dovetail, pinned through tenons-and employing hand-wrought copper or iron hardware. These structural elements were both functional and symbolic, literally holding ... morethe furniture together while also expressing its moral aesthetic: though a factory product, every piece was solidly, honestly made. Stephen Gray is among those few who, early on, recognized both the inherent beauty of Arts and Crafts furniture and the value of the Craftsman Ideal. His collection includes many of the rarest forms and has few equals, but in two regards, it is almost singular: Stephen Gray lives with this major collection and has embraced the Craftsman Ideal in a beautiful, simple, personal, regionally sensitive manner. He lives in a nineteenth-century country house and has integrated an important collection with the ideas of decorating, lifestyle, and sensitivity to environment that were central to the Craftsman enterprise. Through Stephen Gray's collection, it is possible to explore the disparate values of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Arts and Crafts interior, and the tensions inherent in the pursuit of an aesthetically simple Ideal life. This lavishly illustrated book features Stickley's furniture, including many photographs of Stickley designs in use, and it also includes some fine examples of art pottery, lighting fixtures, tiles, and color woodbl

ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE -PENDLETON HOUSE COLLECTION - RISD CATALOG
American Furniture in Pendleton House” By Christopher P. Monkhouse& Thomas S. Michie. Published in Providence by the Museum of Art. Rhode Island School of Design in 1986. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Charles Pendleton was one of a group of pioneering collectors of Americana which included Marsden Perry. George Palmer, Thomas B. Clarke, and of course, Luke Vincent Lockwood. He was depicted in Eben Howard Gay's"A Chippendale Romance" in the person of Mr. Remington, a premiere collector of American Chippendale furniture, a"man of middle age and serious aspect, with) the ferret-like nose of the antiquarian, and a sonorous voice whose tones deepened into thrilling vibrations when discoursing upon his pet hobby. His pet hobby soon became a business, and he became one of the first of the major Americana ... morecollector/dealers. His premier collection was one of the first to be presented to an institution, and a specially designed house was built to hold it. A leader of the"scrape and refinish" school, his star became somewhat eclipsed in the decades after his death, but this cannot obscure the beauty and importance of the magnificent collection he built. A full account of his life and collecting is presented in this catalog, which presents the American furniture from the collection, and includes pieces bought since Pendleton's death. COLLECT ANTIQUE SHAKER CHAIR -ROCKING, PATENT, STRAIGHT - BEST COLLECTING BOOK
The Shaker Chair” By Charles Muller& Timothy D. Rieman. Published by Schiffer Publishing in 2003. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: For well over a century. The world has noted the distinctive chairs made by Shaker communities throughout the eastern United States. A writer for House Beautiful suggested at the beginning of the twentieth century that"If you own a Shaker chair, preserve it with great care, for it will soon be considered an antique, and a rare one at that. In this definitive book, that statement is verified as the authors examine in depth the styles and production techniques of chairs made at ten Shaker communities during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and contemporary photographs, extensive journal and account book references, diaries, postcards, catalog advertisements, and ... moredetailed line drawings are all used to document the chairs' history. Readers will find valuable information on identification of chair types and origins as well as an analysis of design and construction. An essential resource for collectors, historians, designers, and devotees of antique furniture" DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 9"x12" 248 pages, black& white illustrations. EARLY ANTIQUE OAK FURNITURE -RENAISSANCE & MEDIEVAL -CLIVE SHERWOOD COLLECTION
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Clive Sherwood Collection. Early Oak Furniture. Metalwork and Works of Art” The catalog to an auction held in London by Sotheby's on May 22. 2002. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Sotheby's press release noted- The collection was amassed by avid collector and Patent Agent. Clive Sherwood, who was born in Birmingham and lived in the area until his death in Bromsgrove in June 2001. His passion for oak stemmed, at an early age, from an 18th century oak table, accepted by his father in payment of a bad debt, which stood in the hall of his family home. Clive Sherwood’s aim was to collect the very best, and upgrade when he could afford it. The fine collection of Oak Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art, dating from the 15th century onwards which is being offered by Mr Sherwood’s Estate, ... morecomprises more than 400 lots and is expected to fetch £1 million. The care of the furniture has been supervised by Mr Sherwood’s wife, Rosemary, who found, as the collection grew that she was faced with a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, as when anything new appeared a space had to be found. Hans-Christian Bowen, Sotheby’s specialist in charge of the sale, said: It is rare that one sees a large collection with such depth and quality and containing so many items that you would like to own and take home. It stands as a testament to Clive Sherwood’s knowledge and love of his subject. The Sherwood Collection is] believed to be one of the finest collections of Oak to come onto the market in recent years. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6.5"x8.5" 274 pages, 406 lots, color illustrations. The collection spans from the William and Mary to the Federal Period and includes examples from New England, Pennsylvania, New ... moreYork and the South. John B.A. Nye, Director of Sotheby's American Furniture Department, said: Like the Copelands and the du Ponts, the Appell's sought the guidance and expertise of legendary dealer Joe Kindig, Jr. to furnish their Colonial-revival, Georgian-style home with period furniture and antiques. An Interesting Auction Catalog- Illustrated Catalogue of the Rare and Extremely Choice Collection of Early American and English Furniture and other contemporaneous treasures formed during the past seventeen years by the widely known connoisseur and authority on early furniture and ceramics Mr. Louis Guerineau Myers of New York” The catalog to an auction held in New York by the American Art Galleries on February 24-26. 1921. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first Myers auction. Which included extremely fine 17th and 18th century American furniture as well as some early American silver and glass, and some fine English lustreware and Wheildon pottery. Louis Guerineau Myers was among the pioneering collectors of American decorative arts in the first decades of the 20th century. Fellow collector R.T.H. Halsey wrote an appreciation ... moreof Myers after his death for the 1932 auction catalog of his collection of antique American furniture. Silver, pewter and accessories, in which he notes- He knew infinitely more about the touch of the old time craftsman and the wiles of the present day forgers than those of us who frequently called upon him. His judgment was unerring. There is no one to take his place. His ability and zeal as a collector has long been evidenced in his collections, and his much sought-after advice greatly improved the quality of several of the important collections of American furniture assembled during the past decade. It is safe to say that had not Louis Guerineau Myers lived, the knowledge of much of the excellence of craftsmanship of our eighteenth century cabinetmakers would not yet have been known to us. This stunning book presents a complete visual history of furniture design since the end of the Second World War. It begins in 1945 with such achievements as the highly sculptural plywood chairs of Charles and Ray Eames. Who were among the first to use organic shapes derived from the natural world. Revolutionary 1950s designs, including Harry Bertoia's wire Diamond chairs— studies in space, form and metal" and Eero Saarinen's futuristic Pedestal Group, were followed in the late 1950s by the rise of consumerism— and the eccentricities of kitsch— which in turn gave way in the 1960s to the explosion of Pop. The following decades were equally rich, with the development of Counter Design by Ettore Sottsass, the factory lights and scaffolding supports of High-Tech, the Craft Revival, Art Furniture, Ergonomic Styling, and much else, with each trend continuing to show intriguing national and regional differences. Francis Shaw Collection American Furniture 1935 Auction Catalog Realized Prices
A vintage copy of The Francis Shaw Collection of American Furniture and Decorations auction catalog published in 1935. The auction was held on December 12. 13, and 14, 1935 at the American Art Association Anderson Galleries at 30 East 57th Street in New York City. I have seen other copies of this catalog available from various online sources, but this is the only one I have seen with all of the realized prices noted for each item that was sold, making this nice reference work even more interesting. Calculations at the back of the catalog show that the sale totaled $58,855.50 over the three days. Book does show some signs of age and use. The pages have yellowed somewhat. And the cover over the spine is split although the book is still intact. There is a significant bump on the upper right corner that shows as a slight crease on all of the ... moreinterior pages. Still this is an interesting book, especially with the inclusion of the prices. Shipping for this item will be $6.00 via USPS Priority Mail within the USA. Payment must be made by PayPal. Item will ship as soon as payment is received. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*3A%3Cd%3Ff6%3E-1440bd1e70e-0xe2-
