Some were used in his Craftsman magazine, and some were used in a series of catalogs. Many of Stickley's glass negatives are now in the collection of the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, and are reprinted here for the first time. Many have never before been published, and those that were published by Stickley, now benefit from high quality modern printing. Whenever possible dimensions and catalog references are given, making this an important compilation of Sticley's work. A foreword by Leslie Greene Bowman, Director and C.E.O. of Winterthur Museum, Garden& Library, further enriches the work. A driving force in the American Arts& Crafts Movement. Gustav Stickley produced furniture inspired by a vision of craftsmanship and comfortable functionality. Its high quality makes it a standard of the period. Today pieces from his Craftsman Studio are cherished antiques. This new volume

ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT GUSTAV STICKLEY FURNITURE -STEPHEN GRAY COLLECTION
At Home With Gustav Stickley. Arts& Crafts from the Stephen Gray Collection” Edited by Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser& Linda H. Roth. Published by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art& the University Press of New Enland in 2008. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: During his first years as an Arts and Crafts furniture maker. From about mid-1900 to early 1904, Gustav Stickley and his designers created the most significant cabinetwork his firm would ever produce. For the most part made of quarter-sawn American oak, this furniture was substantial, subtly proportioned, essentially rectilinear, and built using traditional joinery-for instance, tenon and key, dovetail, pinned through tenons-and employing hand-wrought copper or iron hardware. These structural elements were both functional and symbolic, literally holding ... morethe furniture together while also expressing its moral aesthetic: though a factory product, every piece was solidly, honestly made. Stephen Gray is among those few who, early on, recognized both the inherent beauty of Arts and Crafts furniture and the value of the Craftsman Ideal. His collection includes many of the rarest forms and has few equals, but in two regards, it is almost singular: Stephen Gray lives with this major collection and has embraced the Craftsman Ideal in a beautiful, simple, personal, regionally sensitive manner. He lives in a nineteenth-century country house and has integrated an important collection with the ideas of decorating, lifestyle, and sensitivity to environment that were central to the Craftsman enterprise. Through Stephen Gray's collection, it is possible to explore the disparate values of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Arts and Crafts interior, and the tensions inherent in the pursuit of an aesthetically simple Ideal life. This lavishly illustrated book features Stickley's furniture, including many photographs of Stickley designs in use, and it also includes some fine examples of art pottery, lighting fixtures, tiles, and color woodbl

Lot of 2 STICKLEY BROS. books~Quaint Furniture & Kaufmann Collection~1993/1996
I purchased 2 box lots of vintage books and these 2 Stickley books were in the mix. They are used. But I feel like they are in good condition. The"QUAINT FURINTURE" is a 1993 re-print of the 1912 furniture catalog. The inside is in very good condition with no tears or stains, but as you can see on the front cover it looks like someone put their coffee cup on it. There is a forward/introduction then a re-print of the catalog, so pic 5 shows that the cover is in the book again. THE KAUFMANN COLLECTION" is from 1996, I believe that this is a gallery or auction look book. Some really nice pieces are pictured in this book. The only condition issue is that the original owner wrote with ink pen on 11 pages-very small, just a number as shown in last photo. It may be what these pieces sold for? I'm not sure. These are great books ... moreto own for reference if you are a furniture collector. ~Contact me with any questions. I also have other vintage items for sale and will combine/discount shipping on multiple purchases when possible. Thanks for looking!

1954 STICKLEY CHERRY VALLEY FURNITURE A Living American Tradition illust CATALOG
Up for auction is this neat little book titled Stickley Cherry Valley Furniture. A Living American Tradition. The catalog of Stickley furniture was published by L. J. G. Stickley, Inc. Fayetteville, N.Y. in 1954. The following history of the Stickley Company comes from the company’s web site: Our story began with three words: Als Ik Kan—to the best of my ability. This old Flemish craftsman's phrase has been the guiding principle of Stickley. Gustav Stickley marked his product with the phrase to assure customers that Stickley furniture was of the finest quality. Every piece made with honor, integrity, and pride. The Stickley brothers burst into international prominence in the early 20th century with their Mission Oak designs. These were based on the notion that furniture should be"honest"a reaction against the fake joinery. Unnecessary ... moregaudiness, and shoddy workmanship of many of the pieces created in the early days of industrial furniture making. The Stickleys used solid construction. What-you-see-is-what-you-get joinery, and the highest quality woods. But even more, they showed a genius for design, creating hundreds of new forms that were at once beautiful to look upon, practical to use, exceedingly strong and long-lasting, and perfect for the new ways American families wanted to live. Stickley furniture was not for shutting up in formal parlors—it was to be used and loved by young and old. Great emphasis was placed on letting the gorgeous. Organic forms of quartersawn oak and other woods speak for themselves. Finishes were not thick gums, but clear dyes that allowed natural grain to sparkle. The same devotion to design. The best workmanship, and enduring value was applied to all Stickley designs. Leopold Stickley's colonial-inspired Cherry Valley Collection, introduced in the 1920s, honored the traditions of early American craftsmen, earning Leopold the title"Revered Dean of Cabinetmakers" in the process. Eventually the Stickley brothers passed away. And respect for hand craft ebbed
