The world has noted the distinctive chairs made by Shaker communities throughout the eastern United States. A writer for House Beautiful suggested at the beginning of the twentieth century that"If you own a Shaker chair, preserve it with great care, for it will soon be considered an antique, and a rare one at that. In this definitive book, that statement is verified as the authors examine in depth the styles and production techniques of chairs made at ten Shaker communities during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and contemporary photographs, extensive journal and account book references, diaries, postcards, catalog advertisements, and detailed line drawings are all used to document the chairs' history. Readers will find valuable information on identification of chair types and origins as well as an analysis of design and construction. An essential resource for collectors, historians, designers, and devotees of antique furniture. SO in SK

Book: ART NOUVEAU FURNTURE BY EMILE GALLE -ANTIQUE FRENCH FURNITURE
Galle Furniture” By Alastair Duncan& Georges de Bartha. Published by the Antique Collectors' Club in 2012. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Emile Galle was one of the great names of the Art Nouveau movement in France. And founder of the famous Ecole de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Furniture became his third discipline after experimenting with the manufacture of wooden bases on which he could mount his glass vases. Following the French tradition of furniture decoration known as marqueterie, his work is characterised by its meticulous decorative veneers, stained with subtle organic dyes; and panels inlaid with stunningly intricate country scenes and flowers. This important book outlines all of Galle's major works of furniture, from the pieces ... moreuniques that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed between 1889 and 1904 at the annual Paris Salons and two World Expositions. The recent emergence of many of his objets de luxe enables the reader to understand many of his pieces for the first time. Written by Decorative Arts specialist Alastair Duncan, Galle Furniture documents the history of Galle's furniture production from his favourite motifs to the ways in which he used furniture design to express his social and political ideals. Duncan includes an encyclopedic range of models created in the Galle Workshops both during and after his lifetime. Beautifully illustrated, and containing translations of Galle's'Notes to the Juries' of the World Expositions, this stunning publication will leave the reader captivated by this remarkable expression of the new art that changed the European aesthetic forever. 2 VOLUME SET ON ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE - EDGAR G. MILLER CLASSIC
An American Furniture Classic- American Antique Furniture. A Book for Amateurs” By Edgar G. Miller. Jr. Published in New York by New York Dover Publications in 1966. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A re-issue of the first trade edition of this classic text. Published in 1937. Perhaps classic collection of pictures is a better description, as what Miller set out to do was create an encyclopedic survey of American furniture forms and styles down to“about 1840” In this he succeeded, drawing heavily on many private collections in the Baltimore area as well as other archives. Semowich notes that“it is still considered a standard reference book” whose“usefulness lies in its photographs” and Homer Eaton Keyes, editor of the Magazine Antiques, praised the book in its Foreword as a good tool to acquiring“the fundamental knowledge ... moreessential to a correct stylistic analysis of any reasonably pure example of old-time American furniture” Keyes went on to tackle one problem with all the pictorial surveys of the era in one of his better flights of literary fancy. Noting that“Not without some guile, I believe, Mr. Miller parades a thoroughly democratic furniture group in which high aristocrats of cabinetmaking consort amicably with honest bourgeois types, and even an occasional upstart of uncertain lineage and doubtful integrity is tolerated if his outward demeanor conforms to a certain accepted minimum of propriety” Nutting has been criticized for the same failing, but not in such velvet-trimmed words. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 2 volumes. 8”x10.5” 1,106 pages, 2,115 black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: The covers have some wear and rubbing(please see the photos. Above and below) The books themselves have some minor wear, but otherwise are clean and nice, with tight bindings. CARE CONSERVATION REPAIR & UPKEEP OF ANTIQUE FURNITURE & WOODEN OBJECTS
Preserving Your Investment. Care and Maintenance of Furniture and Wooden Objects” By Marc A. Williams. Published in Haverhill; Furniture Conservation Services in 1983. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A practical guide to the principles and facts of the conservation of furniture and other antique objects made of wood. This is NOT a"how to do it" handbook that will show you how to repair joints and refinish tops-it is. Rather, a guide as to why and how wooden objects deteriorate, what you can do about it, what you cannot do about it, and what information that you may have heard is true and false(for instance, the concept that you need to'feed' wood to keep its moisture content intact is inaccurate and potentially damaging) It was written to give the collector the basic information needed to decide how ... moreto care for a collection, or how to proceed when there is damage. Topics covered include Ethics, Wood, Finishes, Paint, Gesso, Gilt, Adhesives, Humidity, Temperature, Light, Biological Deterioration(bugs& mildew) Pollutants& Dirt, Chemical Deterioration, and Accidents. An excellent starting point which lays the groundwork for further study. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 5.5"x8.5" 32 pages. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. Clean condition. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This volume is the first to survey the Metropolitan Museum's world- renowned collection of European furniture. One hundred and three superb examples from the Museum's vast holdings are featured. They originated in workshops in England. France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, and Spain, and date from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century. A number of these pieces belonged to such important historical figures as Pope Urban VIII, Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, and Napoleon. There is also one purely decorative piece, a superb vase made for a Russian noble family who, according to one awestruck viewer, owned all the malachite mines in the world. The makers of some of the objects are unknown, but most of the pieces can be identified by label, documentation, or style as the work of an outstanding European designer-craftsman, such as Andre-Charles Boulle, Thomas Chippendale, David Roentgen, or Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Sleeping Around: The Bed from Antiquity to Now” By Annie Carlano& Bobbie Sumberg. Though the variations on sleeping accommodations that humans have come up with through the millennia are seemingly endless. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNIITURE OF SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -WINTERTHUR STUDY
Harbor& Home. Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts. 1710-1850” By Brock Jobe. Gary R. Sullivan& Jack O'Brien. Published by the University Press of New England in 2009. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Presented for the first time. The richly illustrated findings of the Southeastern Massachusetts Furniture project at Winterthur Museum. Through furniture, this exhibition catalogue explores the cultural identity of a little-studied region of 18th and 19th century New England: southeastern Massachusetts, an area that stretches from just south of Boston to Providence, east to the tip of Cap Cod, and includes the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. The era between 1710 and 1850 was marked by enormous changes in the landscape, population, and economy of this area, as well as in the activities of furniture ... morecraftsmen and the purchasing patterns of local residents. Three themes are paramount here: 1. Regionalism in the character of furniture made in the area and the forces that shaped that identity. 2. Fashion, changing tastes and the growing affluence of local residents over time. 3. Shop practices and the evolving craft practices of furniture makers through the recreation of two shops, the rural handcraft tradition of Samuel Wing of Sandwich in 1800 and the mechanized operation of a New Bedford or Fall River chair factory in 1850. The exhibition includes approximately 75 pieces of furniture from private and institutional collections, tools and equipment from the Samuel Wing cabinet shop(now owned by Sturbridge Village) and selected household furnishings depicting interiors in southeastern Massachusetts during the 18th and 19th centuries. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE -UNDERSTANDING & COLLECTING -JOHN T. KIRK CLASSIC
American Furniture. Understanding Styles. Construction, and Quality” By John T. Kirk. Published in New York by Harry N. Abrams in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: What style is it? How is it put together? Is it real or is it a fake? How can I make it look its best without destroying its value? John T. Kirk answers these and many other questions about when. Where, how, and even why a piece of furniture was made. And by juxtaposing genuine works with copies, he shows how to judge the quality and authenticity of antiques to distinguish a fake from the real thing. Covering three centuries of changing styles, this handsome and useful volume details each period's essential traits, offering practical guidance to novice and seasoned collectors alike. The book moves sequentially through major design periods, including ... morethe popular William and Mary and Queen Anne styles, Rococo and Chippendale, Federal, Shaker, Modern, and Revival. Illustrations of silverwork and paintings set the furniture in context, and comparisons with European pieces point out the unique aspects of American design. John T. He then received his bachelor’s degree from Earlham College and earned a master’s degree in art history from Yale University. He was a professor at Boston University for many years, and retired as emeritus professor of art history. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FEDERAL FURNITURE BY SCOTTISH CABINETMAKERS IN NEW YORK
Scottish Cabinetmakers in Federal New York” By Mary Ann Apicella. Published by the University press of New England in 2007. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first full-length study of the Scottish community of craftsman in Federal New York. Extensively researched throughout the United States and the British Isles. This lavishly illustrated volume brings to light the influence of Scottish cabinetmakers and designs on furniture made in Federal America. While the Scottish-born Duncan Phyfe has always been recognized as one of the premier makers of Federal furniture, Mary Ann Apicella illuminates the community of craftsmen active in and around Atlantic coast style-centers during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. By separating English antecedents and American design trends from those identified by the ... moreauthor as uniquely Scottish in form, ornament, and construction, the particular hallmarks of Scottish aesthetics and craftsmanship become visible. To illustrate these findings, individual chapters devoted to chests of drawers, wardrobes and linen presses, sideboards, desks and secretaries, tables, chairs, and clocks, offer a comparative study of items. To contextualize and personalize these objects, the author includes a discussion of Scottish migration patterns, artistic and social influences, and the cultural epicenter of New York City. Carefully researched, clearly written, and copiously illustrated, Scottish Cabinetmakers in Federal New York is a valuable resource for dedicated collectors and will introduce new enthusiasts. BOOK : ANTIQUE DIRECTORY of PERIOD DETAIL
Antique Collector's Directory of Period Detail 224 pages color photos Hard cover with dust jacket 30 x 23 cm 1.276 kg English Handsome full-color photos. Informatively labeled line drawings, and an enlightening text show how to identify antique chairs, tables, bureaus, case furniture, coffee pots, teapots, silverware, candlesticks, glassware, and porcelain pieces according to the historical period of their origin. Fine examples of European and American craftsmanship spanning three centuries are shown and discussed, starting in the mid 1600s and progressing to the 1930s. Illustrations show how basic furniture styles were derived by copying and scaling down the dominant architectural shapes of the day, and how ... moreartisans in different countries then added their own distinctive touches. The authors advise collectors on what to look out for when buying an antique, then tell how to detect any repairs, and know whether or not a repair affects the piece's value. Historical periods discussed in detail present detailed information on the Baroque to Rococo(mid 1600s to late 1700s) the Chippendale story, Neoclassical style, the Machine Age, and Art Deco.
