DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 288 pages. Publisher: Facts On File. Inc; 1996) ISBN: 0816030057. List Price $44.00] Long overshadowed by Greek mythology. Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field. Dictionary of Roman Religion" answers questions, makes connections, and sets Roman religion in its full context as no other source does. An essential reference for students, researchers, and teachers, as well as those interested in ancient religions, myths and legends, Roman society, and classical studies, this dictionary is a welcome and novel addition to the vast library on ancient Roman life. This book presents examples that“vary from simpler designs, as in Colonial America, to the high style of English, French, Italian, Spanish, and other European designs. While the book focuses on individual pieces, many complete rooms are included to show the type of settings for which different kinds of furniture were designed and made. The book makes no attempt to be a complete catalogue of styles or makers, but rather it presents a fascinating array of some of the finest furniture in Europe and America during the past three hundred years. The broad scope of the book offers all antique lovers, decorators, artists, designers, in addition to more general readers, a valuable reference work as well as an inspirational one. An important achievement of this book is the superb color photography and views of the architecture of interiors which are rarely attained so consistently and successfully. Chapter coverage includes: Versaille and the Court style. The Protestant North[of Europe] Rococo, the great cabinetmakers, the late 18th century, the empire, regency and federal styles, the mid-19th century and the artist-craftsman. Brief essays are highly readable and this text, a pictorial guide to the“cream of the crop” of Western interiors is a visual treat from cover to cover. Auction Catalog of Rare Antique American Furniture & Historrical Items. Colonial
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 An auction catalogue for an auction which took place at Sotheby’s in New York. On 20 January, 2006. As the title says, the auction was for“Important Americana: Including Property from the Collection of Elisha Hanson to Benefit the National Gallery of Art. The catalog is full of beautiful antique items, of the sort you would expect to discover in an old American estate or mansion. Tons of furniture, decorative items, lots of rare silver, and much more. Naïve art, grandfather clocks, folk art, paintings, and much more. Items range from 1700s and 1800s– lots of colonial and early American items. The sale consisted of 608 separate lots, all of which have extensive descriptions, all with full colour photos, and some of them even being full-page photos. Each item has a description, giving details of the ... moreartist or workshop, the work itself, dates, material, and so on. Also details of provenance, and provides an estimated price. This is great for the collector, so you can compare the value of these works with others. Also a great reference, as these artworks were assembled here once, only to be dispersed to different private buyers, most not to be seen in public again for a generation. The colour illustrations are stunning, and it’s like having a gallery or museum on your shelf! A great addition for anyone interested in American history, U.S. art, colonial historical material, and so on. The book is large format, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It has a glossy cover, and is 484 pages long. The book is used, but in good condition. With only minor shelf wear, the book is in good condition. The glossy pages make this extremely heavy(well over 3 pounds) so the top bidder should add $13.90 postage in Canada, 18.90 postage to the USA. I have other, similar catalogs up now, so check that out too, and save on postage. Please e-mail me if you have any questions, and thanks for bidding!

An Interesting Pair of Auction Catalogs- The Important Collection of American Antiques from the King Hooper Mansion. Marblehead, Mass. Sold by Order of Mr. I. Sack, Boston[and] Important American Antiques from the King Hooper Mansion. Marblehead, Mass. Part Two] Sold by Order of Mr. I. Sack, Boston The catalogs to two auctions held by The Anderson Galleries in New York on December 10-11. 1926(Sale 2112) and November 11-12, 1927(Sale 2192) description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Both of Israel Sack's famous"King Hooper Mansion" sales. Sack filled the historic Marblehead mansion with period furniture and accessories. Left them on display there for a year, and then sold them all at auction; and then he did it again. A 1998 New York Times article noted- The history of Israel Sack Inc. is a rags-to-riches tale. Israel ... moreSack. An immigrant cabinetmaker from Lithuania, opened an antiques store on Charles Street in Boston in 1905. He was attracted to America's early urban furniture, the fancy mahogany and walnut chests, highboys and chairs made in Boston, Newport, R.I. Salem, Mass. New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. He practically invented the field that is known today as Americana. When he started, American furniture was not a collectible form, his son Albert recalled. There were no shows, or any American furniture collections in museums. In the 1920's, Israel Sack moved to New York and started to amass first-rate furniture, and collectors who could afford it. Israel Sack was a brilliant marketer. He sponsored research[and] lectured widely. In the early part of this century, when American society was enamored of English antiques, he persuaded people to pay a premium for pieces made in America. You can tell American furniture by its accent, he liked to say. He argued that American furniture has its own qualities; instead of ornamentation and gilding, it has form, line, proportion, craftsmanship and rarity. He declared it an art form. From the 1920's until his death in 1959, Israel
AMERICAN ANTIQUE NEW ENGLAND COLONIAL FURNITURE -1924 IRVING W. LYON CLASSIC
The Colonial Furniture of New England. A Study of the Domestic Furniture in use in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries” By Irving W. Lyon. Published in Boston by Houghton Mifflin and Company in1924. Revised 3rd edition. Limited to 515 copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first book on this subject. Initially published in 1891. As the Wards point out(Ames& Ward) Lyon introduced many techniques used by later researchers, including the use of estate and inventory records, newspaper advertisements and cabinetmaker's price books, and he also traveled to England to investigate the origins of his beloved 17th century New England furniture. A pioneering study which is still useful. Stillinger concludes- Lyon's conclusions about the homes of the forefathers have held up startlingly well. The Colonial Furniture ... moreof New England' was so carefully researched and thoughtfully crafted that it remains a standard reference today-an extraordinary accomplishment considering the sophisticated research and technological aids available to the modern student of furniture. No other early furniture scholar's work has the same continuing validity. Dr. Lyon once told an acquaintance that in his medical practice his goal was always to get back to first causes. He took a comparable approach to his furniture studies. With excellent results" Semowich 771. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 285 pages, plus 113 black& white plates. CONDITION NOTES: Some minor soil. Silver, pewter and accessories, in which he notes- He knew infinitely more about the touch of the old time craftsman and the wiles of the present day forgers than those of us who frequently called upon him. His judgment was unerring. There is no one to take his place. His ability and zeal as a collector has long been evidenced in his collections, and his much sought-after advice greatly improved the quality of several of the important collections of American furniture assembled during the past decade. The authors make no attempt to identify cabinetmakers or even the location a piece was made, but they do present a fairly complete provenance of each piece, most of them having been passed down in the same family since the 18th century. Published by the Harvard University Press in 1941. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first edition of this well illustrated and important catalog of this major collection of American furniture. Silver and accessories. This beautifully printed volume, set in Monotype Bembo and with full-tone collotype illustrations, established a high visual standard for furniture catalogs that was emulated by Joseph Downs in the 1950s and Morrison Hecksher in the 1980s. These objects are not included in Richard Randall's 1965 catalog. Immigrant, and art collector and benefactor who cut a swath through the Boston and American collecting scenes. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston's patrons of the arts, and their rediscovery and championing of the works of Fitz Hugh Lane and Martin Johnson Heade, along with 19th century American fine and folk artists earned them a place in American collecting lore. The Karoliks deflected such honors, and in an open letter to the MFA's Director, Maxim Karolik declared"We are not'Patrons of Art' or'Public Benefactors. We refuse to accept these banal labels. We accept with pleasure only one label: Useful' Semowich 1352. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.25"x12" 366 pages

Antique Newport Furniture Picture Archive- Connecticut. 2000s. DISCUSSION: An odd item from the reference library of noted Connecticut Antiques& Americana dealer Wayne Pratt: it is a folder of annotated photocopies of photographs of antique Newport. From the 1920's until his death in 1959, Israel Sack sold to the top collectors of Americana: Henry Ford, Henry Francis duPont, Mabel and Francis Garvan, and Charles K. Davis, president of the Remington Arms Company
