TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Lost Chronicles of The Maya ... moreKings by David Drew. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 450 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1999) Over the last two centuries explorers have made the most remarkable discoveries in the tropical forests of Central America. Across much of present-day Mexico. Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras, dozens of cities-some with populations of well over 100,000 have been unveiled. Every year fresh reports emerge of the findings of unknown Maya ruins; great temples, palaces, towering stone pyramids, and the tombs of the Maya kings. What these spectacular discoveries indicate is the former presence of an exceptionally advanced, sophisticated, and complex society. Recent major developments in the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphics have revealed that alongside the material achievements of the Maya ran intellectual accomplishments in astronomy. Math, and calendrics. Seemingly tied to the complexities of Maya religion, these achievements were remarkable for a society technically in the Stone Age. The Chronicles of the Maya Kings are the histories recorded on the reliefs of temple walls, on magnificent hieroglyphic stairways, and on stone stelae planted by Maya rulers in the plazas of their cities. In this fascinating book. David Drew brings to life this extraordinary civilization. He answers questions about why the Mayas constructed their cities in the hostile setting of the jungle, the exact age of their ruins, and the strange human images depicted in elaborate costume at so many Maya sites. He asks why all knowledge of the Mayas was lost at the time of the Spanish conquest. He looks at their history, art, architecture, political systems, religion, and, finding that the Maya are not in fact a lost or dead people, there are five million descendants living in Mexico, considers the ways in which their society today illuminates that of their ancestors. From Black Land To Fifth Sun: The Science of Sacred Sites by Brian Fagan. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 403 pages. Publisher: Helix Books; 1998) Brian Fagan. ... moreA prominent U.C. Santa Barbara archaeologist uses the latest scientific techniques to interpret the spiritual lives of ancient people. From“Black Land to Fifth Sun” is an engrossing look at a dramatic new generation of archaeological discoveries made possible by cutting-edge science that are transforming our understanding of the inner lives of ancient people everywhere. Until recently, archaeology was concerned mainly with piecing together the material lives of our ancestors. In this groundbreaking book, master storyteller and respected archaeologist Brian Fagan explains how cutting-edge science can now take us beyond the artifacts into the mystical realm of shamans and spirit mediums, ancestor worship, and ritual sacrifice. From the Niles black land to the Aztecs world of the Fifth Sun. From Stonehenge to Jericho, Fagan describes how Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Automated Design mapping, and other sophisticated scientific methods are helping us to decode the religious and spiritual beliefs of our forebears. This new archaeology of the mind blends a wealth of scientific disciplines from botany, zoology, and geology to neuropsychology, palynology, and nuclear physics. With vivid imagery and a transporting voice, Fagan revolutionizes our understanding of the inner lives of ancient people. CONDITION: NEW. New oversized softcover. The Golden Pharaoh by Philipp Vandenberg. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 328 pages. Publisher: Macmillian Publishing Co. 1980) For three thousand ... moreyears Tutankhamun had been lost to time. Buried beneath the shifting sands of the Egyptian desert. Then on November 26, 1922, after an exhaustive search in the Valley of the Kings, his tomb was found and its fabulous treasures were at last brought to light. Vividly recounting the suspense and intrigue that led to the discovery, The Golden Pharaoh” unravels the final mysteries that shroud the most sensational find in the history of archaeology. If finding the tomb was a triumph, finding it intact went beyond the wildest hopes of Egyptologists and stirred the imagination of the entire world. Behind the glamour and glory of the monumental feat lie the stories of the two men who made it possible. The first man was Howard Carter. The obsessed excavator who endured hardship and ridicule but refused to give up, despite loneliness, disappointment, and bitter enmity toward the patron he hated but upon whom he depended. And secondly, Lord Carnarvon, the aristocratic adventurer who devoted his vast fortune to a seemingly hopeless quest only to die, under mysterious circumstances, at the moment his dream was fulfilled. Drawing upon scholarly research as well as eye-witness reports. Philipp Vandenberg reveals the corruption, rivalries, scandals, and explosive conflicts ignited by the discovery. His account is a gripping drama of diplomats and thieves, dedicated archaeologists and reckless fortune hunters, impassioned Egyptian nationalists and self-serving British overlords. Detailing the history of the tomb and its construction, Vandenberg recreates the fascinating world of ancient Egypt. From the revolutionary rule of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, the splendid pageantry, the desperate power struggles, the palace and temple intrigues, the customs, beliefs, and bizarre sexual practices. Probing the mystery of Tutankhamun’s birth and life. The author explains why the tomb esc

c.1920's Newton's Furniture Store, Morristown, NJ: Antique Vintage BIG Ad Paper
RARE Circa 1920's Antique- Vintage Furniture Store Advertising- This is not a reproduction! NEWTON'S COMES TO MORRISTOWN GRAND OPENING SALE! 36-38 Speedwell Avenue. Morristown, NJ This listing is for a very big. Original paper advertising from Newton's Furniture Company. I found info online that said in 1929 Newton's was sold to McManus Bros. furniture store of Elizabeth which also took over the Morristown store location after the 1929 sale. Since this original paper was from when Newton's was just opening in Morristown, it has to be from at least as far back as the 1920's. You can tell from the illustrations of the furniture, accessories, appliances(see old refrigerator icebox) that this is old, what we consider to be antique furniture but back when it was first sold as new. Paper is folded to create 4 big pages. ... moreThen has other folds to make it smaller. Fully opened it measures 36" by 24" Off white background with blue lettering and illustrations. Condition of the paper is as you see in the photos with this listing. Paper is old. Has creases/folds, some rub and scuff mostly on edges, clips and snips, light soil marks here and there. If you are interested in Morristown history. Consider adding this unique paper to your collection. How many of these can actually still be around after all of these years? Item is being sold“as is” as was found. Buy with confidence as I offer 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you have questions when item arrives. Just let me know. Herter Brothers Victorian Antique Furniture - History Types Inlays / Scarce Book
HERTER BROTHERS– FURNITURE AND INTERIORS FOR A GILDED AGE. By Katherine Howe and others, Harry N. Abrams, Inc. 1994. The Herter brothers’ extraordinary accomplishments have never before been the subject of a book. Here is an in-depth“study of these talented men. Their company, and its work, prized then as now for its design, richness of materials and detail, superb craftsmanship, and splendid diversity. The best of the Herter Brothers’ furniture and interiors are displayed in 133 color and 167 black-and-white illustrations, including many close-up details as well as comparative work by rival fine cabinetmakers of the time in New York and Europe. This book tells the story of the company from its earliest manifestations, when Gustave worked with other partners and alone, through his partnership with his brother, to Christian’s years as head ... moreof the firm and the end of his tenure. The book places the company firmly in its context, international as well as domestic, with an extensive discussion of the brothers’ background and influences and an absorbing narrative of the furniture and decoration trade in New York City in the latter half of the nineteenth century. This book also reviews superb work done by the firm for their wealthy patrons. These commissions, many illustrated here, included woodwork, plasterwork, lighting fixtures, window treatments, wall and ceiling paintings, carpets, textiles, mosaics, stained glass, and decorative objects in addition to furniture. Cincinnati Art-Carved Aesthetic Movement Furniture Interiors / In-Depth Book
CINCINNATI ART-CARVED FURNITURE AND INTERIORS edited by Jennifer Howe. Cincinnati Art Museum, OH, 2003. Illustrated in color and black-and-white. This book is a scholarly guide to Cincinnati art-carved furniture and interiors. In the early 1850s three British expatriates- Henry Lindley Fry, his son William Henry Fry, and Benn Pitman- settled in Cincinnati and launched one of the most important manifestations of the Aesthetic Movement in the United States, the Cincinnati art-carved furniture movement. The Frys and Pitman and their students- primarily affluent women seeking suitable artistic pastimes- gained wide acclaim for their woodcarving through their display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. National art journals continued to feature Cincinnati woodcarving throughout the 1880s and to publish articles by Pitman, a prolific ... morewriter and philosopher of the movement. This fascinating book“catalogs the Cincinnati Art Museum’s impressive holdings of Cincinnati art-carved furniture and architectural elements and includes an appendix of biographical information on more than one thousand of the Frys’ and Pitman’s woodcarving students. 8.5” x 11” softback in very good condition. 295 pages. BIEDERMEIER by Angus Wilkie. Abbeyville Press, NY, 1987. This comprehensive text“contains an overview of the astonishing variety of furniture produced by local cabinetmakers in Vienna. Berlin, Munich, and in northern Germany as well as scattered localities in Italy, Scandinavia, and Russia. Antique Georgian Dublin Furniture (207 Illustrations) / Scarce Book
THE MORE SIGNIFICANT GEORGIAN FURNITURE by F. Lewis Hinckley. Washington Mews Book, 1990 continues the explanation of Hinckley’s major thesis, a longstanding confusion between Irish furniture and English. A primary concern thus of these particular researches has been to establish the unacknowledged importance during the eighteenth century of Dublin in comparison with London. Paris, Stockholm, Potsdam, and so on… Late Chippendale furniture was produced in Dublin during the continued popularity of Chippendale designs after the regular Chippendale years and lasting until the middle of the nineteenth century… English literary authorities and museum furniture historians should gradually realize that it can only diminish or seriously harm their authority when they cannot recognize, by design alone, that such plainly true Dublin masterpieces have ... morenot originated within their professed field of expertise. One hopes that pieces of such fine and superfine capital-city quality as those so mistakenly credited to Pierre Langlois and John Channon will soon be generally recognized as not being in any way representative of London designs and execution and that they will then be exhibited and published according to their own prestigious capital city of origin. 8.5” x 11.5” hardback with dust cover very good condition(spine is sun bleached) 125 pages. History of Herman Miler Inc. poster
Here in poster form is a photo history of the Herman Miller furniture from its beginnings in 1925 to 1965 when the literature was published. It measures 14 1/2" wide x 42 1/2"long when opened out. When folded as it came from the factory it measures 7 1/4" x 10 1/8" This has been stored in a file since 1965 and has started to pull apart in the center of the folds. I've tried to show this clearly in the photos. If this was dry mounted or framed under glass. The tears would not show enough to distract. This is a comprehensive history showing furniture design, the arts, literature and life in the time line of the poster. As it goes through the timeline, it shows the classic furniture by Herman Miller and other contemporary designers from Mies, Breuer, Eames, George Nelson and others during the 20th century up to 1965. ... moreBecause it is not in perfect condition, I am asking a substantial discount from one that would be perfect. I will ship it USPS Priority Mail so you won't have to wait for delivery. I will accept only PayPal and prefer to ship only to the continental United States. I hope the photos show this poster in its best light as it is quite interesting to follow through the development of modern furniture. thanks for looking and good luck bidding.
