The world has noted the distinctive chairs made by Shaker communities throughout the eastern United States. A writer for House Beautiful suggested at the beginning of the twentieth century that"If you own a Shaker chair, preserve it with great care, for it will soon be considered an antique, and a rare one at that. In this definitive book, that statement is verified as the authors examine in depth the styles and production techniques of chairs made at ten Shaker communities during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and contemporary photographs, extensive journal and account book references, diaries, postcards, catalog advertisements, and detailed line drawings are all used to document the chairs' history. Readers will find valuable information on identification of chair types and origins as well as an analysis of design and construction. An essential resource for collectors, historians, designers, and devotees of antique furniture. SO in SK

There are ... morea few additional pages of "testimonials" as well as the original, unused order form. I didn't see an actual date/year in the catalogue but the order form has 189__ where one would write in the date. The catalogue measures 7.25" x 9.25". Someone has scratched out the number on the cover and written a new number. Not sure when or why. Some wear to covers, clean pages. I have a second catalogue from Ludwig Baumann & Co. that features a lot of lamps and other household items in a separate listing (same year/era).

These chairs that furnished the nation's best-dressed homes at the turn of the century. An actual reprint of the detailed catalogue of the Phoenix Chair Company. DIE FORM OHNE ORNAMENT Bucher Der Form Volume 1 First Edition. Published by the Deutscher Werkbund in 1924 Hardback without dust jacket 102 pages. Profusely ... moreillustrated with black and white photographic plates A significant moment in the history of the Modern Movement. Die Form ohne Ornament(Form without ornament) was an exhibition held by the Deutscher Werkbund(DWB) in 1924. The accompanying book became the first in their famous series of publications titled Bucher Der Form(Books on Form) The DWB was a colloboration of designers united by the rejection of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil in favour of purer forms reflecting mass production. Luminaries Bruno Paul. Peter Behrens, Richard Riemerschmidt, Josef Maria Olbrich and Wiener Werkstätte founder Josef Hoffmann were all among its founder members. The book. Which is full of black and white photographic plates, was remarkable at the time of publication in its exclusive celebration of artistic endeavour in the decorative arts inspired by industrial production. It features some important works from the Wiener Werkstatte and the early Weimar Bauhaus. Size: Approximately 19cm x 26cm Condition: Good to very good. Aside from a little expected yellowing on the end papers. Internally it is very bright and clean. The board covers are sound save for a light bump to the bottom of the spine, the echoes of which can be seen on some pages. There is some neat underlining in red to the text but no other inscriptions. In all, a lovely copy of the scarce first edition of a seminal text of modernism. Offered for your consideration is a Fabulous Hand Hewn Studio Craft Stool by David N. Ebner. Furniture designer. This stool is a Classic RENWICK STOOL, ... moreso named because it was originally made for an exhibition at the Renwick Gallery. Ebner established his own studio in 1973 and is considered an integral part of the"Studio Craft" furniture movement. His furniture has been shown at numerous Exhibitions throughout the USA. His accomplishments in this field can be read in his Biography, it is worth reading before bidding. This early Renwick Stool may have been commissioned by the previous owner and is signed D.N.E. 77 at the inside bottom of one side, each of the 7's has a slash through it in British style. This is an Estate find of a well know artist that had many fine things in her home. I am not sure of the type of wood, but it looks like Teak or Cherry, it has an Asian and American Moderne style. This Renwick Stool is approx. 15.5" tall and the slightly concave top is approx. 15.5" X 13" The dovetails are hand cut and the craftsmanship is spectacular. This has a very minor chip( about 1/16" X 3/16" to the bottom of one leg plank and a slight flaw at the side of one dovetail. Neither one of these imperfections are glaringly visible. This Renwick Stool is in absolutely beautiful condition for its 37 years of use and display, a true future antique. Because this has been pre-owned and used in a home, it is being offered at a price point far below any other on the open market at this time. Please ask any questions before bidding and I will answer and quickly and thoroughly as possible. The pictures are an important part of this description, and more will be provided individually if needed. PayPal Only. Payment is expected within 3 days of the end of Auction. 1790-1840 FANCY AMERICAN FURNITURE, PAINTED CHAIRS, TEXTILES, CERAMICS, More!
American Fancy. Exuberance in the Arts 1790-1840” By Sumter Priddy. Published by the Chipstone Foundation& the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Between 1790 and 1840. Millions of middle-class Americans throughout the nation encountered“Fancy” they rode in a Fancy sleigh, dressed up in Fancy clothes, blew their noses in Fancy handkerchiefs, bought goods at Fancy shops, ate at Fancy tables on Fancy dishes, and slept under Fancy coverlets. Not just fancy but Fancy: an early nineteenth-century cultural phenomenon born out of new and enlightened ways of seeing, understanding, and responding to the surrounding world. Fancy expressed itself in just about everything that pleased the senses; generally colorful and boldly patterned, it elicited delight, awe, surprise, whim, and caprice. Whether ... moreexperienced in the form of painted surfaces, kaleidoscopic quilts, or imaginary landscapes, Fancy engaged the emotions and expanded the imagination, expressing the core of human fancy. American Fancy offers an appropriately fantastic experience of this uniquely American sensibility. Author Sumpter Priddy has assembled and produced an original oeuvre in the field of decorative arts, going beyond the traditional modes of furniture analysis, which concentrate on style, history, and construction, to consider the perceptual and emotional responses through which the original users and viewers would have interacted with these material things. To this end he employs the interpretive methods used in the fields of literature, fine arts, philosophy and even psychology. Rich, fully illustrated, wondrously researched, and bound in a cover that imitates a typical Fancy pattern, American Fancy does its marvelous subject true. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x12.5” 267 pages, color and black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: There is a long. Warm gift inscription on the title page from the author. Minor wear. Published by the Connecticut Historical Society in 1956. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A catalog of 30 pre-1800 chairs. Interesting not only because of the wide variety of Connecticut chairs it illustrates, but also because of the frank and at times brutal commentary. The Connecticut Historical Society website notes- Newton Case Brainard(1904-1964) became a member of the Connecticut Historical Society on January 5, 1904. Brainard was very active in his community and in 1920 he was elected Mayor of Hartford. Later, he served on the Board of Park Commissioners. He was an ardent supporter for the erection of a municipal airport and, as such, Brainard Field was named in honor of him and dedicated in 1921. Brainard was also instrumental in saving the Hartford State House and, in part due to his position as Chairman of Hartford’s Fine Arts Commission, oversaw that the building was kept in repair and personally saw to it that the Senate Chamber was refurnished. FRENCH BOOK : Le Style Louis XIII (antique furniture, cabinet, chairs ...)
Powered by The free listing tool. Antique American Windsor Chairs - Great Illustrated Study -Wayne Pratt's Copy
American Windsor Chairs” By Nancy Goyne Evans. Published in New York by the Hudson Hills Press& The Winterthur Museum in 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The definitive book on American windsors. A scholarly history of the style and its development in America. An exploration of regional characteristics, with illustrations and descriptions of hundreds of examples, and a checklist of 2,400 chairmakers. A stupendous book! Publisher's Weekly noted- Thomas Jefferson sat in one, and so did New York City laborer John Cooper. The wooden Windsor armchair, introduced from England to Philadelphia in the 1730s by Penn family-sponsored governor Patrick Gordon, was initially a seat for the elite and prosperous, but after the Revolution it became the favorite chair of the general populace. Combining comfort, sturdy craftsmanship, ... moresimplicity and elegance, the Windsor chair, with its raked back and sculptural seat and its splayed legs, implying strength, is prized by collectors. Organized geographically from New England to the South, the Midwest and Canada, and augmented with more than 1000 illustrations(25 in color) and 24 maps, this encyclopedic study meticulously documents the Windsor chair's regional variations and the evolution of a recognizable American style. Decorative arts historian Evans brilliantly situates the chair within the cultural fabric of colonial and federal America. A must for collectors and scholars, this volume is published in association with the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum of Wilmington, Delaware. Though the variations on sleeping accommodations that humans have come up with through the millennia are seemingly endless. Here two curators from the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe take readers on a lively tour of beds and sleeping customs over time and around the world, from beds barely more than mats on the ground to heavy, built-in cabinet beds.
