Beyond Death: The Chinchorro Mummies of Ancient Chile by Bernardo T. Arriaza. Foreword by John W. Verano. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 176 ... morepages. Publisher: Smithsonian Institution Press; 1995) Thousands of years before ancient Egyptians mummified their dead elite. The South American Chinchorros performed elaborate mummification rituals for deceased members of every level and age of their society. The Chinchorros are exceptional for the sheer number of known mummies, nearly two hundred, and the variety and complexity of their mummification techniques. While this early South American society left no written record describing their customs and concept of death. The mummified remains provide clues to their culture. The Chinchorros lived as fishermen on the Pacific Coast of Northern Chile and Southern Peru for millennia. While they did not have ceramics, woven cloth, or metal tools, the early Chinchorros developed a complex process of skinning, eviscerating, and reconstructing a body so that it has remained preserved for 8,000 years. Arriaza details three distinctive styles of mummification in addition to bandaged mummies: the earliest"black mummies" coated with manganese paste; the"red mummies" coasted with red ocher; and the mud-coasted mummies of the latest period. Arriaza describes the clothing. Simple ornaments, and everyday tools that accompanied the bodies, and he speculates that people who concentrated so much energy in caring for their dead must have had a strong belief in the afterlife. Drawing on evidence from archaeology, biology, and Andean cosmology, Arriaza discusses the Chinchorro notion of death, their supernatural b

1954 STICKLEY CHERRY VALLEY FURNITURE A Living American Tradition illust CATALOG
Up for auction is this neat little book titled Stickley Cherry Valley Furniture. A Living American Tradition. The catalog of Stickley furniture was published by L. J. G. Stickley, Inc. Fayetteville, N.Y. in 1954. The following history of the Stickley Company comes from the company’s web site: Our story began with three words: Als Ik Kan—to the best of my ability. This old Flemish craftsman's phrase has been the guiding principle of Stickley. Gustav Stickley marked his product with the phrase to assure customers that Stickley furniture was of the finest quality. Every piece made with honor, integrity, and pride. The Stickley brothers burst into international prominence in the early 20th century with their Mission Oak designs. These were based on the notion that furniture should be"honest"a reaction against the fake joinery. Unnecessary ... moregaudiness, and shoddy workmanship of many of the pieces created in the early days of industrial furniture making. The Stickleys used solid construction. What-you-see-is-what-you-get joinery, and the highest quality woods. But even more, they showed a genius for design, creating hundreds of new forms that were at once beautiful to look upon, practical to use, exceedingly strong and long-lasting, and perfect for the new ways American families wanted to live. Stickley furniture was not for shutting up in formal parlors—it was to be used and loved by young and old. Great emphasis was placed on letting the gorgeous. Organic forms of quartersawn oak and other woods speak for themselves. Finishes were not thick gums, but clear dyes that allowed natural grain to sparkle. The same devotion to design. The best workmanship, and enduring value was applied to all Stickley designs. Leopold Stickley's colonial-inspired Cherry Valley Collection, introduced in the 1920s, honored the traditions of early American craftsmen, earning Leopold the title"Revered Dean of Cabinetmakers" in the process. Eventually the Stickley brothers passed away. And respect for hand craft ebbed
