The world has noted the distinctive chairs made by Shaker communities throughout the eastern United States. A writer for House Beautiful suggested at the beginning of the twentieth century that"If you own a Shaker chair, preserve it with great care, for it will soon be considered an antique, and a rare one at that. In this definitive book, that statement is verified as the authors examine in depth the styles and production techniques of chairs made at ten Shaker communities during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and contemporary photographs, extensive journal and account book references, diaries, postcards, catalog advertisements, and detailed line drawings are all used to document the chairs' history. Readers will find valuable information on identification of chair types and origins as well as an analysis of design and construction. An essential resource for collectors, historians, designers, and devotees of antique furniture. SO in SK

For the first time in modern publication, the styles of furniture available at the height of the 1920's, a pivotal period between Art Nouveau, Art Deco. The Depression year 1932 was the very worst year in the history of the furniture industry and most of the companies that failed did so in the four years between 1928 and 1932. Therefore. Later saying it is good to buy the very best! None the less, Israel, his father must have taught him very well. PARNHAM PARK- ANTIQUE ENGLISH FURNITURE, TEXTILES, SILVER & ANTIQUES -Christie's
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Parham Park. Pulborough, West Sussex. Selected Furniture, Works of Art, Silver, Textiles, Costume, Linen, European Porcelain and Glass” The catalog to an auction held in London by Christie's on May 13-14. 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A selection of very fine antiques- superb English furniture. Silver and ceramics, and an extraordinary assortment of antique linens& textiles. Parham Park is an Elizabethan house in Cootham. Between Storrington and Pulborough, West Sussex, South East England, originally owned by the Monastery of Westminster and granted to Robert Palmer by King Henry VIII in 1540. The foundation stone was laid in 1577 by the two year old Thomas Palmer, and Parham has been a family home ever since. Thomas Bishopp(later Sir Thomas Bishopp, 1st Baronet) bought ... moreParham House in 1597. For 325 years his descendants continued to live at Parham House Estate until January 1922. Then in 1922 the Hon. Clive Pearson, younger son of Viscount Cowdray, bought Parham from Mary, 17th Baroness Zouche in her own right, and he and his wife Alicia opened the house to visitors in 1948, after the Second World War when it had also been home to evacuee children and Canadian soldiers. Off the Long Gallery at the top of the house there is a fascinating exhibition which touches on the period between 1922 and 1948, with many family photographs as well as photographs of the building works which took place during that time. Mr and Mrs Pearson, followed by their daughter Veronica Tritton, spent more than 60 years carefully restoring Parham and filling it with a sensitively chosen collection of beautiful old furniture, paintings and textiles, also acquiring items originally in the house. There is a particularly important collection of early needlework. What they created at Parham is a rare survival of mid 20th Century connoisseurship within a major Elizabethan house. Now owned by a charitable trust, Parham House and Gardens are surrounded by some 875 acres(3.54

18th CENTURY WINDHAM CONNECTICUT FURNITURE, SILVER, PAINTINGS, ANTIQUES, More!
The Devotion Family. The Lives and Possessions of Three Generations in Eighteenth-Century Connecticut” By Lance Mayer& Gay Myers. Published in New London by the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in 1991. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An interesting exhibition featuring 8 period portraits as well as a number of pieces of furniture and some silver. Linens, books, etc. A March 31, 1991 New York Times story reported- Members of an 18th-century family in Windham, Ebenezer Devotion, a judge of the county court; his wife, Eunice; his parents; his four children, and other relatives, are the subjects of an exhibition at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street in New London. Many family artifacts have been preserved by the Devotions' descendants still living in Windham. Many of the items were donated to historical societies ... moreand museums, and they have been gathered together for this display by Lance Mayer and Gay Myers, Lyman Allyn's conservators. The family portraits in the exhibition were the first important commission for a 20-year-old painter named Winthrop Chandler. Among them is one of Ebenezer's father, a minister and member of the state legislature. The family had a distinguished history. Ebenezer's sister married Samuel Huntington, who became Governor of Connecticut. Ebenezer himself was a member of the Sons of Liberty. He made his fortune as a merchant, trading in rum, molasses, sugar, and food for the American Army during the Revolutionary War. The exhibition contains his ledgers, which detail his sales and purchases. The personal possessions- including beds, desks, chairs, tables, silver, clothing and portraits- indicate the family's high status in the community. Letters exchanged among Ebenezer's children as they went off to pursue careers and marriages provide intimate glimpses into their relationships. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES - BAYOU BEND IMA HOGG COLLECTION
American Decorative Arts and Paintings in the Bayou Bend Collection” By David B. Warren. Michael K. Brown, Elizabeth Ann Coleman, Emily Ballew Neff. Published by the Museum of Fine Arts. Houston in 1998. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A stunning. Oversized catalog of this important collection, including furniture, art, textiles, silver, ceramics and glass. The'Bayou Bend Collection' was assembled by Ima Hogg. A collector of American arts during the first"Golden Age" from the 1920s through the 1950s. Bayou Bend is the former home of Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg. The mansion, designed by architect John F. Staub, was built between 1927 and 1928 for Ima Hogg and her brothers, William C. and Michael Hogg. Miss Hogg created a series of gardens that were intended as outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. ... moreIn 1957, Miss Hogg donated her home and her collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966. Staub's plan for Bayou Bend combined eighteenth-century Georgian architecture with elements that are distinctly Southern and of Spanish Creole architecture. The collection at Bayou Bend presently consists of approximately 4,700 objects that reflect historic and stylistic periods from 1620 to 1870 installed in some 28 period room settings that showcase American decorative arts from 1620 through 1870. Miss Hogg began assembling this important collection of American decorative arts in 1920. To provide suitable settings for these extraordinary antiques. Staub designed simple but stately interiors in the style of colonial American rooms. In 1920, while sitting for a portrait by artist Wayman Adams, Miss Hogg admired a simple armchair belonging to the artist that was made in colonial America and later obtained a similar Queen Anne chair for herself. Almost half a century later, Miss Hogg acquired the very same chair that she had first seen in Adams' studio. From the time I acquired my first Queen Anne armchair in 1920, I had an unaccountable

DESIGNER JACQUES GARCIA COLLECTION ANTIQUE FRENCH FURNITURE & ANTIQUES -1990
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Jacques Garcia Collection. Important French Furniture. Decorations, Works of Art and Carpets” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on October 27. 1990. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The auction sale of a wonderful collection of 18th century French furniture and decorations. The preface notes- The collection offered in this catalogue was gathered by Jacques Garcia over a number of years to furnish and decorate the main floor of a house built by Jules-Hardouin Mansart(1645-1708) Principal architect to Louis XIV. Mansart built this house for himself in the Marais area of Paris. Although this project did not mark the beginning of Mr. Garcia's collecting, the beauty and authenticity of the environment carefully restored by him dictated an emphasis on pieces which ... morewould be in harmony with the character of the rooms. This was the start of a relentless pursuit at dealers, small provincial auctions, and prestigious auctions in France and abroad. Having completed the project, Mr. Garcia purchased the Chateau de Menou in Burgundy, and has now decided to devote his energies to the task of restoring and bringing it back to life" A globe-trotting interior designer. Jacques Garcia has been the recipient of many French cultural distinctions, such as"le Prix Mont-Blanc" and"le Prix Oscar Wilde" in 2002. The same year, l'Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques awarded him with the prestigious"Prix Henri Texier" honoring his work in the renovation of Champ de Bataille. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES -the 1929 GIRL SCOUT EXHIBITION CATALOG
Loan Exhibition of Eighteenth Century and Early Nineteenth Century Furniture& Glass. Portraits by Stuart. Peale and others, for the Benefit of the National Council of Girl Scouts, Inc. Published in New York by the American Art Galleries in 1929. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The importance of the Girl Scouts Loan Exhibition cannot be overstated. Although sometimes it seems it has become something of a cliché. Simply put, it was the most important and richest loan exhibition of American antique furniture and other decorative arts ever staged to be drawn in large part from private collections; although it did not start the popularization of American antiques, it contributed largely to its continued success and gave both scholars and collectors new focus; it brought a large number of prominent dealers and collectors ... moretogether in a way which had not been accomplished since the Hudson-Fulton exhibition of 1909; it provided the first broad popular showing of American Federal-period antiques; finally, it inspired an enthusiasm which gave impetus to new books, catalogs and research. The Girl Scout Exhibition is seen by many as the starting point for all serious modern scholarship in the fields of American decorative arts. The catalog features illustrations of fine furniture. Textiles, glass, ceramics and paintings, drawn from notable collections from across the country. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 926 items, hundreds of black& white illustrations. MUSEUM OF EARLY SOUTHERN DECORATIVE ARTS - ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES
Southern Perspective. A Sampling from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts” Edited by Gary J. Albert. Published by MESDA in 2005. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A wonderful survey of 40 objects- furniture. Ceramics, silver, paintings, from the MESDA collection. Out of print as hardcover. MESDA's website notes- MESDA is the realization of a vision shared by two extraordinary individuals: Frank L. Horton and his mother Theodosia"Theo" L. Taliaferro. Who were pioneering antiques dealers and collectors who dedicated most of their lives to raising awareness of and appreciation for domestic objects made in the South. During the first half of the twentieth century, southern antiques were mostly dismissed by scholars and ignored by collectors. A movement to challenge the existing attitudes began in 1949 ... morewith the first Williamsburg Antiques Forum at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which included a seminal session that called attention to the lack of information about southern craftsmanship. The intense study of specifically southern antiques began with the 1952 Williamsburg Antiques Forum, which coincided with the first definitive exhibition of southern furniture, Furniture of the Old South, 1640- 1820 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and culminated with the opening of MESDA in 1965. The results of the museum's efforts to fulfill its mission have extended well beyond the exhibition of the collection to include groundbreaking field research programs, award-winning publications, a respected research center and decorative arts library, and exceptional educational programs such as the Graduate Summer Institute cosponsored by MESDA and the University of Virginia. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES - FANCY DECORATED STYLES 1790-1840
American Fancy. Exuberance in the Arts 1790-1840” By Sumter Priddy. Published by the Chipstone Foundation. And the Milwaukee Art Museum, in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Between 1790 and 1840. Millions of middle-class Americans throughout the nation encountered"Fancy" they rode in a Fancy sleigh, dressed up in Fancy clothes, blew their noses in Fancy handkerchiefs, bought goods at Fancy shops, ate at Fancy tables on Fancy dishes, and slept under Fancy coverlets. Not just fancy but Fancy: an early nineteenth-century cultural phenomenon born out of new and enlightened ways of seeing, understanding, and responding to the surrounding world. Fancy expressed itself in just about everything that pleased the senses; generally colorful and boldly patterned, it elicited delight, awe, surprise, whim, and caprice. ... moreWhether experienced in the form of painted surfaces, kaleidoscopic quilts, or imaginary landscapes, Fancy engaged the emotions and expanded the imagination, expressing the core of human fancy. American Fancy offers an appropriately fantastic experience of this uniquely American sensibility. Author Sumpter Priddy has assembled and produced an original oeuvre in the field of decorative arts, going beyond the traditional modes of furniture analysis, which concentrate on style, history, and construction, to consider the perceptual and emotional responses through which the original users and viewers would have interacted with these material things. To this end he employs the interpretive methods used in the fields of literature, fine arts, philosophy and even psychology. Rich, fully illustrated, wondrously researched, and bound in a cover that imitates a typical Fancy pattern, American Fancy does its marvelous subject true. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5"x12.5" 267 pages, color and black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: The covers have some light wear and a ding to the upper side on the rear cover. BENJAMIN GINSBURG COLLECTION -ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & AMERICANA ANTIQUES
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Contents of Benjamin Ginsburg. Antiquary, including the Property of Cora Ginsburg” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Christies on October 14-15th. 1983. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Fine American furniture and accessories. Especially English, European and export ceramics, from this noted antiquarian firm. A March 27, 1983, New York Times story reported- For 50 years the sign above the door at 815 Madison Avenue- Ginsburg& Levy- conveyed to all antiques enthusiasts in pursuit of American furniture and European ceramics that treasures lay beyond. In 1976 the sign was changed with the removal of the Levy name from the lintel on the Georgian facade of the five-story establishment, signaling a corporate divorce and the end of a family alliance. It was then that Benjamin ... moreGinsburg and Bernard Levy, sons of John Ginsburg and Isaac M. Levy, cousins who founded the antiques concern in 1901, officially parted company. One of the nation's oldest and most respected antiques concerns had ended. Ben sort of lost heart when the business broke up, recalled Cora Ginsburg, his wife, a dealer in period textiles. She was surrounded by packing cases and a crew of young workers who had come to organize the removal this week of the contents of the shop which is at 68th Street. She explained that Mr. Ginsburg's failing health, which has kept him away from the shop for about two years, made him decide to close the business and auction everything in it. I don't like selling the collection, Mr. Ginsburg conceded in a telephone interview the other day. But I can't take care of it anymore. The 78-year-old dealer reminisced about the family business which he joined in 1921 after studying engineering and deciding against it as a career. We weren't as specialized then, Mr. Ginsburg commented. We always dealt in European things of good quality. Ginsburg& Levy moved up to 68th Street in 1926, transforming its new home into a Georgian showcase, insta
