Egypt: People. Gods, Pharaohs by Rose-Marie& Rainer Hagen. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 240 pages. Publisher: Taschen; 2003) This is a ... morehuge. Very heavy and high quality art book filled with descriptions of life in ancient Egypt and with absolutely superb full color plates. It is a presentation quality publication. The world’s first strike took place in 1152 B.C. We do not know how many workers laid down their tools, but we do know why they did so. They had not been paid their rations of grain and oil, and so the tomb workers in the Valley of the Kings went on strike. In modern times, the ancient history of Egypt has only been about its rulers and monumental architecture. You will certainly find the Pyramid of Cheops and the Temples of Ramesses and Hatshepsut in this book. But what you will also find is an account of a long-neglected side of Egyptian history: the people’s everyday lives. How did they picture the world? What sort of relationship did men and women have to each other? How did they spend their leisure time? And why did they develop such a perfect technique of preserving the body after death in the form of a mummy; as light as a blown egg and as hard as a statue” The authors investigate stimulating questions and dare to take a fresh look at an ancient past that seems much more real to us from this new perspective. Rose-Marie Hagen was born in Switzerland and studied history as well as the Romance languages and literature. After longer study periods in France and Florence. She began lecturing at different institutions including the American University in Washington, D.C. Rainer Hagen was born in 1928 in Hamburg, and graduated in literature and theatre studies in Munich. He went on to work for radio and TV where his latest position has been as chief editor for Northern Germany’s public broadcasting service. CONDITION: Unblemished except VERY slight shelfwear to dustjacket. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Condition is entirel

The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio Translated by Frances Winwar- Complete and Unabridged. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 666 pages. Publisher: ... moreThe Modern Library; 1955) The Decameron' is a fascinating example of classic literature that remains fresh and entertaining today. Written in the mid-14th century. It concerns the first major outbreak of the black plague in Europe, which emerged in Italy in approximately 1347. Boccaccio begins, in the prologue, by stating his purpose for writing the book- namely, to entertain literate women with nothing else to do with their time. The story itself concerns ten young Florentines(seven women- Pampinea, Filomena, Neifile, Fiammetta, Elissa, Lauretta, and Emilia; and three men- Panfilo, Dioneo, and Filostrato) who flee the city in hopes of escaping the plague. To occupy themselves during this time, they tell each other stories, with each person telling one story per day to make a total of 100 stories over the course of the entire book. At the beginning of the first day, Boccaccio provides an excellent and detailed description of the plague itself. The book ends with the refugees returning to their homes, and a closing epilogue from the author. CONDITION: Shelf wear and soiling to Dust Jacket. Yellowing pages and in good condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Decameron is an entertaining series of one hundred stories written in the wake of the Black Death. Recounted by young citizens of Florence who have fled the city in order to escape the plague. These young unmarried nobles, the"beautiful people" of the age, decide to wait out the Florentine plague in their country estates, amusing each other every evening with earthy stories, some outright bawdy, others pointing to a moral. This Italian book, written in 1351, inspired Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Balzac, and remains one of the most enjoyable an

Time-Life The Emergence of Man Series– Life Before Man. CONDITION: Excellent. Light shelf wear to covers. Otherwise it looks like the book has never really ... morebeen read except perhaps flipped through once or twice. Pages are pristine; clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 160 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1972) The“Emergence of Man” series was released in the mid-1970’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a unive

Chaucer and the Late Medieval World by Lillian M. Bisson. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: St. Martin’s Press; 1998) Divided between the ... moreouter world of affairs and the inner world of poetic insight. Chaucer sought to make sense of his changing, conflicting world. In“Chaucer and the Late Medieval World” Lillian M. Bisson examines the societal issues that the poet explored in his work. Bisson provides lively interpretations of Chaucer's texts, especially“The Canterbury Tales” in the context of the paradigmatic shifts taking place around him, and offers a broad historical overview. Often going back to the Early Christian period, Bisson helps the reader grasp the significance of those shifts. She focuses on three major areas of medieval life; religion, class/commerce, and gender; all of which were experiencing considerable change in the fourteenth century. The book builds a bridge between an unmediated encounter with Chaucer’s texts and the more specialized discussions found in most contemporary criticism. And provides a detailed analysis of Christian culture. Placing each topic in a broad cultural context, Chaucer and the Late Medieval World” helps the reader to better understand the questions that teased Chaucer’s imagination into poetry and to enter into the cultural conversation with which he engaged his audience. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Bisson places Chaucer's work in the context of some of the major cultural and social currents of his day. A time when the underpinnings of medieval society were undergoing substantive challenges and revision. Students will find this book particularly useful as a historical companion to The Canterbury Tales. It seeks to bring to non-specialists some of the excitement that the new interest in social history and popular culture is generating among scholars, and it attempts to serve the growing interest in inte

Asteroid: Earth Destroyer or New Frontier? By Patricia Barnes-Svarney. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 292 pages. Publisher: Plenum Press; 1996) ISBN: 0306454084. ... moreAsteroids sling through space. Celestial debris of diverse origins: leftovers from the formation of the solar system, broken offshoots of parental asteroids, or comets that have lost their glow. For the first time in a popular book, Patricia Barnes-Svarney discloses how some asteroids- rich in precious minerals such as gold and platinum- may one day be lassoed and mined by man. She also explores how the natural resources that abound in some asteroids could possibly support human life, leading to their colonization and use as space stations. One day, too, they may reveal to us the secrets of the origins of life. But if an asteroid merely one kilometer in diameter- about the size of eleven football fields end-to-end- were to smash into Earth, it would mean a global catastrophe. And if a larger asteroid- one the size of Vermont- were to strike. Life on our planet would come to an end. We know that we've been struck before- from the large and small impact craters that dot the Earth's major land masses. If, as one theory states, the chance of a major collision is currently about one in ten thousand- similar to that of dying from anesthesia during surgery or of being killed in a car crash during any six-month interval- should we be living in fear? How could we possibly prepare ourselves for such a disaster? Patricia Barnes-Svarney, an asteroid enthusiast since childhood, asserts that the threat is real, and that there are better defenses than those now in place. In Asteroid, she vividly evokes both the perils and fascination of these heavenly bodies that have the power to yield untold rewards- and boundless destruction. CONDITION: NEW. Unblemished except VERY slight shelfwear to dustjacket. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Lost Chronicles of The Maya ... moreKings by David Drew. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 450 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1999) Over the last two centuries explorers have made the most remarkable discoveries in the tropical forests of Central America. Across much of present-day Mexico. Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras, dozens of cities-some with populations of well over 100,000 have been unveiled. Every year fresh reports emerge of the findings of unknown Maya ruins; great temples, palaces, towering stone pyramids, and the tombs of the Maya kings. What these spectacular discoveries indicate is the former presence of an exceptionally advanced, sophisticated, and complex society. Recent major developments in the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphics have revealed that alongside the material achievements of the Maya ran intellectual accomplishments in astronomy. Math, and calendrics. Seemingly tied to the complexities of Maya religion, these achievements were remarkable for a society technically in the Stone Age. The Chronicles of the Maya Kings are the histories recorded on the reliefs of temple walls, on magnificent hieroglyphic stairways, and on stone stelae planted by Maya rulers in the plazas of their cities. In this fascinating book. David Drew brings to life this extraordinary civilization. He answers questions about why the Mayas constructed their cities in the hostile setting of the jungle, the exact age of their ruins, and the strange human images depicted in elaborate costume at so many Maya sites. He asks why all knowledge of the Mayas was lost at the time of the Spanish conquest. He looks at their history, art, architecture, political systems, religion, and, finding that the Maya are not in fact a lost or dead people, there are five million descendants living in Mexico, considers the ways in which their society today illuminates that of their ancestors. Egyptian Religion: The Beliefs of Ancient Egypt Explored and Explained by Lucia Gahlin. DESCRIPTION: Softover: 128 pages. Publisher: Southwater; 2002) ... moreThe many gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt. And the sacred sites and temples that are dedicated to them, have fired our imaginations for centuries. Religious belief was central to life in ancient Egypt, and played a fundamental role in the development of their great society. The ancient Egyptians believed that their religious beliefs and practices would accompany them from life into death and the afterlife. In the first half of this book, the state religion is considered, with an examination of the preparation for the afterlife, including the procedures and ceremonies that followed death such as mummification and the Weighing of the Heart. Once these ceremonies were performed, the deceased’s burial site depended largely on their status and wealth. An in-depth look at mastabas, pyramids, and rock-cut tombs is vital to our understanding of the state religion of ancient Egypt. While the religion of the state concerned itself with the interaction between the gods and the pharaoh. Popular religion permeated every aspect of people’s lives. The second half of the book examines the effects of popular religion on daily activities. Magic, superstition, and ritual were by no means considered unorthodox or an alternative to the religion of the state. Often a priest who performed rituals in the state temples would also be called upon to carry out what we would call magic or sorcery. The religion of this fascinating society has been documented with maps and a wealth of beautiful photographs, reproductions and color artworks, making“Egyptian Religion” an essential reference for anyone interested in this ancient civilization. Medieval People by Eileen Power. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 210 pages. Publisher: HarperCollins(new reprint of 1963 copyright) In this classic ... moreof social history. Noted medieval scholar Eileen Power recreates the lives of six ordinary people who lived during the Middle Ages. Drawing upon account books, diaries, letters, records, wills, and other authentic historical documents, she brings to vivid life Bodo, a Frankish peasant in the time of Charlemagne; Marco Polo, the well-known Venetian traveler of the thirteenth century; Madame Eglentyne, Chaucer’s prioress in real life; a Parisian housewife of the fourteenth century; Thomas Betson, a fifteenth century English merchant; and Thomas Paycocke of Coggeshall, an Essex clothier in the days of Henry VII. Largely untouched by fame(with the exception of Marco Polo) The lives and activities of these common people offer a unique glimpse of various aspects of the medieval world: peasant life, monastic life, the wool trade, Venetian trade with the East, domestic life in a middle-class home, and more. The Golden Pharaoh by Philipp Vandenberg. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 328 pages. Publisher: Macmillian Publishing Co. 1980) For three thousand ... moreyears Tutankhamun had been lost to time. Buried beneath the shifting sands of the Egyptian desert. Then on November 26, 1922, after an exhaustive search in the Valley of the Kings, his tomb was found and its fabulous treasures were at last brought to light. Vividly recounting the suspense and intrigue that led to the discovery, The Golden Pharaoh” unravels the final mysteries that shroud the most sensational find in the history of archaeology. If finding the tomb was a triumph, finding it intact went beyond the wildest hopes of Egyptologists and stirred the imagination of the entire world. Behind the glamour and glory of the monumental feat lie the stories of the two men who made it possible. The first man was Howard Carter. The obsessed excavator who endured hardship and ridicule but refused to give up, despite loneliness, disappointment, and bitter enmity toward the patron he hated but upon whom he depended. And secondly, Lord Carnarvon, the aristocratic adventurer who devoted his vast fortune to a seemingly hopeless quest only to die, under mysterious circumstances, at the moment his dream was fulfilled. Drawing upon scholarly research as well as eye-witness reports. Philipp Vandenberg reveals the corruption, rivalries, scandals, and explosive conflicts ignited by the discovery. His account is a gripping drama of diplomats and thieves, dedicated archaeologists and reckless fortune hunters, impassioned Egyptian nationalists and self-serving British overlords. Detailing the history of the tomb and its construction, Vandenberg recreates the fascinating world of ancient Egypt. From the revolutionary rule of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, the splendid pageantry, the desperate power struggles, the palace and temple intrigues, the customs, beliefs, and bizarre sexual practices. Probing the mystery of Tutankhamun’s birth and life. The author explains why the tomb esc

Publisher: Harper& Row Publishers; 1987) Historians have only recently awakened to the importance of the family. The basic social unit throughout human history. Long left to the anthropologists and sociologists, the family and marriage, its indispensable accessory, have stirred intense controversy since being taken up by early modern historians. Phillipe Aries, Edward Shorter, Peter Laslett, and others postulated a number of challenging hypotheses. Was the family in former times large in size and extended in shape, and his it undergone"progressive nuclearization" or has the dominant type always been the conjugal family(parents and children) Were the relationships within the family in pre-industrial society"cold" and is affectionate and humane child-raising, good mothering" a product of industrialization? Were women formerly chattels with few rights in a male-dominated world? Research now permits a synthesis of the findings of modern scholars into a coherent account of the development of marriage and the family through the thousand years of the Middle Ages, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the early modern era. The Quest for the True Cross by Carsten Peter Thiede& Matthew d'Ancona. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 205 pages. Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan; 2002) ... moreThe cross may be the most powerful and recognizable symbol in the history of Western civilization. But what are the historical origins of the cross. And what happened to it after Christ's crucifixion? In a church outside Rome, a small fragment of wood, neglected for hundreds of years, may hold the answer to these questions and prove fundamental to understanding the real genesis of Christianity. Thiede and d'Ancona, best selling authors of"The Jesus Papyrus" have written an astonishing, revisionist work. The Quest for the True Cross" explores the long-ignored fragment of the Titulus Crucis, the inscribed headboard of Christ's cross. Their claim is a radical challenge to the modern view that all supposedly holy relics are fakes. Thiede and d'Ancona have amassed evidence that this fragment dates from the time of Christ and was brought to Rome by Queen Helena. The mother of Constantine the Great. According to legend, Queen Helena found the cross in Jerusalem in A.D. 326, on the site where the Church of the Holy Sepulchre now stands. Following in Queen Helena's footsteps, and drawing together the threads of history, archaeology, myth, science, and religion, The Quest for the True Cross" is a record of a remarkable journey through the ancient world. Much of what we think we know about early Christian faith and the world's most potent image will be called into question by this rare and groundbreaking book. CONDITION: Brand New. Never read. Monarchs of the Nile- Second Edition- by Aidan Dodson. DESCRIPTION: Softocover: 238 pages. Publisher: The American University in Cairo Press; 2000) ISBN: ... more9774246004. This book presents a concise account of the lives and times of some of the more significant occupants of the Egyptian throne. From the unification of the country around 3000 BC down to the extinction of native rule just under three millennia later. Some, such as Tuthmosis III, had a major impact on their time, and were remembered by their own people until the very civilization collapsed. Others, such as Tutankhamun, were soon forgotten by the Egyptians themselves, only to burst into popular culture thousands of years after their deaths, as a result of the labors of modern archeologists. Still more remain unknown outside the small circle of professional archeologists, but led lives that call out for wider dissemination. This book sets out to provide a mix of all three categories, in an attempt to present a balanced view of Egyptian kings and their range of achievements. Early Anthropology in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries by Margaret T. Hodgen. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 526 pages. Publisher: University of Pennsylvania ... morePress; reprint of 1964. 1998) Although social sciences such as anthropology are often thought to have been organized as academic specialties in the nineteenth century. The ideas upon which these disciplines were founded actually developed centuries earlier. In fact, the foundational concepts can be traced at least as far back as the sixteenth century, when contact with unfamiliar peoples in the New World led Europeans to create ways of describing and understanding social similarities and differences among humans. Early Anthropology in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries examines the history of some of the ideas adopted to help understand the origin of culture. The diversity of traits, the significance of similarities, the sequence of high civilizations, the course of cultural change, and the theory of social evolution. It is a book that not only illuminates the thinking of a by-gone age but also sheds light on the sources of attitudes still prevalent today. CONDITION: New. Never read. Antique American Painted Country Furniture by Female Women Cabinetmakers Artists
Women's Painted Furniture 1790-1830. American Schoolgirl Art” By Betsy Krieg Salm. Published by the University Press of New England in 2010. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Beautifully illustrated. Comprehensive study of women's painted furniture, a long-lost art that sheds light on women's lives in the early republic. In this long-awaited tribute to women's painted furniture, author and artist Betsy Krieg Salm rediscovers a style of early American decorative art still largely unknown to curators, antique dealers, art historians, and the public. She documents the socioeconomic, cultural, and aesthetic history of the form, which includes such items as sewing and work boxes, face screens, and tables. Salm carefully chronicles the process itself, describing a selection of cabinetmakers, woods, varnishes, ... moreand paints, along with the specific tools and techniques used by women artists. Salm analyzes the styles, designs, and patterns of more than two hundred pieces. Treating these objects as documents of women's daily lives, she shows the close relationship between painted furniture motifs and those of needlework and other decorative arts of the period. Thanks to her scholarship, this art form may now receive the recognition it deserves in the broader genre of American women's art. Women's Painted Furniture presents a comprehensive collection of images, most of which are not available elsewhere. Primary sources include recipes, patterns, genealogies of artisans, chemical analyses of antiques, instructions in methods and technique, and the original, mainly English, sources of artistic inspiration for painters and needle workers.
