A Fine Vintage Auction Catalog- The Jaime Ortiz-Patino Collection of French Furniture and Decorations" The catalog to an auction sale held in New York by Sotheby’s on May 20. 1992. DISCUSSION: A legendary collection. Filled with superlatives and material that makes the word“superlative” seem dull and insufficient. It was rich in 18th century decorations, including ormolu-mounted Chinese vases, gilt lamps& mirrors, Sevres porcelains, bronzes and other very fine objects. There were also the finest examples of the French cabinetmaker’s art, many pieces of which are illustrated here in folding color plates. The furniture include many signed examples, and many with gilt mountings and fine marquetry work. Click Here. Double your traffic. Get Vendio Gallery- Now FREE! HOW TO KNOW FRENCH ANTIQUES by Ruth T. Costantino. Clarkson N. Potter, Inc. NY, 1961. Given hundreds of line illustrations and over 210 black-and-white photographs. This authoritative reference book will assist the reader in“identifying French antiques and instruct them on how to deal the real from the fake. Especially useful is a collection of short biographies of all the greatest French furniture makers, a bibliography, and an index for immediate reference. Starting with the period from the Renaissance to that of Louis XIV, before makers started to mark their furniture, the author then considers the great age of the Rococo, Regence and Louis XV. She shows by example how the guild system worked and influenced style, and the effect of the law of 1741 which required pieces to be ... moremarked. All the major styles are explained with many illustrative examples, including transition to Louis XVI, Directoire, Consulate, Empire, Restoration and Charles X. Chapters are devoted to painting, drawing, and the graphic arts, as well as to tapestries, textiles, clocks, bronzes, gold and silver, snuffboxes, faience, porcelain, and glass. An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Jacques Garcia Collection. Important French Furniture. The preface notes- The collection offered in this catalogue was gathered by Jacques Garcia over a number of years to furnish and decorate the main floor of a house built by Jules-Hardouin Mansart(1645-1708) Principal architect to Louis XIV. Mansart built this house for himself in the Marais area of Paris.
