Victorian Walnut Marble Top Washstand circa 1870's
I am pleased to offer for sale a Solid Walnut Victorian Marble Top Washstand circa 1870's. This one drawer over two door washstand features tear drop pulls on raised burl walnut panels and a beautifully carved center key escutcheon. The inset panels of the doors also offer raised burl panels. On each side of the doors are two narrow vertical panels divided by a small rosette. Inside is a shelf which offers wonderful storage opportunities. The bottom does lock and we do have the key. The drawer lock does no work. The white and grey serpentine shaped marble is in excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks. The back splash is still there but the candle holders are gone. The holes have been covered by rosettes which is shown in the pictures. This piece measures 34 3/4 inches high, 32 inches wide and 17inches deep. The weight is approximately ... more50 lbs. The stand is probably from New York and features a fine(newly refurbished) original finish, flame mahogany veneers, fluted legs, and original hardware. It is 30 3/4" high by 18 3/4" wide by 18 1/4" deep. There are some condition issues as follows: there is a crack running front to back on each of the sides and one running side to side on the back. There is a finely inlaid checkered accent around the drawer front as well as the front of the legs. There is also an inlaid design in the center of the front door. The stand is topped with a piece of marble that measures 14" x 14-1/2" The marble is not cracked or chipped. But does show wear consistent with age. The stand measures 33-3/4" tall x 15-1/2" wide 14-3/4" deep. All of the wood is solid on the piece- there is no laminated wood or plywood. The screws in the brass hardware appear to be machine made and I estimate that the piece dates ... moreto the mid 1800's and was made in England. The piece overall is in excellent condition for its age. There is minimal wear consistent with age and some age cracks in the wood. The joints are tight and there do not appear to be any repairs to the piece. The back piece of wood on the stand does have a large crack as seen in the photos. This 19th century washstand measures 39 1/2 inches tall to the top of the marble backsplash.31 inches tall to the top of the marble at the front,33 inches wide and 20 1/2 inches deep and weighs approximately 100 lbs. The marble shelf measures 31 1/2 inches wide by 4 inches deep. The marble top appears to be an old replacement and has no chips or cracks but some slight staining as common with old marble. There is an area ... moreup under the left shelf bracket that has been"colored in" with white perhaps to cover a stain and blends very well and not very noticeable at all in my opinion unless very close inspection. The lock is intact on the doors below but the key provided just aids in opening the doors and doesn't work the lock. SOLID BIRDS EYE MAPLE BOWL TURNED MAPLE SPINDLE LEGS Handmade bowl is about 13" to 13 1/2" diameter and 4" top to bottom. The bowl is about 5/8" thick. That is the flat surface shown on top edge of bowl. It stands about 23" tall overall The round thick ring above the three legs that hold spools is about 8 1/4" round and 1 3/4" thick. The dowel pegs are 3/8" and 4 1/2" tall. The post under bowl to top of lower spool ring is about 10 3/4" long. The three legs are about 7 1/2" long. Victorian 1875(?) (Marble?) Top Side Cabinet, Bedside Chest Nightstand poor cond
This may be earlier than the Victorian era, I'm just guessing on 1875. The poplar drawers harken back to an 1840-ish desk I sold two weeks ago that had similar dovetailing at the corners as well as a chamfered fit of the drawer bot. I want to say this prob had a marble top originally. I have a piece of marble(in 4th pic) but it needs to be cut to fit and is not part of this auction. The pine board top is not fastened down. The door panels are loose and not fastened down. There is no key to the lock in the RH door. There is no bezel on the keyhole but the lock. Is in place in rear of door. Door hinges are set securely and work smoothly, Doors close as they ought without binding. Drawer works smoothly. All joints/joining of wood appears to be tight(except for the loose front door panels) The nightstand is solid and not wobbly(except. For ... morethe fact that it's missing a rear'foot' see pic) There are no deep scratches or splintering or. Chipped out portions of the wood. If successful bidder would like the marble slab. I can sell for $25.00. I had the marble listed for sale awhile back on its own auction but it didn't sell. It would cost $80.00 to ship to West Coast so prob only practical to buy if planning on picking up nightstand here at 19525. I can deliver nightstand in my station wagon at cost of 89 cents per mile one way(I eat the return mileage) plus tolls. In other words. If you live 100 miles away. Say in south Jersey, it would cost $89.00 to have this delivered to your door plus 5.00 bridge toll to get across the Commodore Barry bridge. Weight is 43 lbs. It's been 12 hours since posting this and I had to. Get something in the attic and found the missing. Rear 3 x 2 1/4 x 1/2 inch thick'footpad' with corner chamfer which had only one surviving nail holding it in place.
