This auction is for antique German bisque Schafer and Vater figural elephant shaving mug. It is well molded with nice relief and detail. It has a cameo of ballerina on each side and figural elephant handles. The condition is very good undamaged. There is only minor paint wear on the gold. It has star and crown mark along with G814 incised on the bottom and measures 3 ½” tall and 3” across. On Feb-23-13 at 17:29:51 PST. This antique figurine shows two Japanese girls, one with an outstretched, graphic folding fan and the other playing a stringed instrument while she dances. Rare black/political figurine from the early 1900s. Club in one hand. With a sign reading"Votes for Women" in the other hand. Statue stands just at 6 inches tall. I have seen others in worse condition go for upwards of 800-1000 on various auction sites. 2 Schafer Vater RARE Double Nodder Tea Ladies w/ Foot Nodder Scot Waiting 4 Tide
Offering a lot of two Schafer Shafer Vater Nodders for one money. The rare double nodder of the two character ladies having afternoon tea with the kitty looking on- and the Scotsman googly with a pipe in his mouth"Waiting for the Tide" written across the front. A large'C' in the bottom of the rocker dish. The ladies measures just over 5" long and 2" wide by 4" tall. Marked with the impressed S&V crown with sun rays. Two open container type receptacles in the rear but I don't think this was a match strike nor vase- could be anything- Teapot and cup on the table in the garden- black cat watching for a scrap- small hearts engraved on the front of their stools with a floral type of etched in the orange back of the'container's in the back. Great character faces- the old lady on the left in pink ... moredress with a blue bonnet has been broken in two- with her arm gone and the back of her bonnet missing- wouldn't actually be that noticeable but for the sloppy residue of glue left slopped all over her. Suppose could be carefully removed- I haven't tried. Offering with this another S&V Nodder of the Scotsman- measures 2.75" wide X 2.75" deep X 4.5" high. In fine shape- discovered I have a duplicate. Has a smudged black mark of paint across the front. Stamped on the bottom"made in Germany" also smudged- just to the left of this is a very faint S&V incised mark. Green tam with a blue pom pom, orange shirt with a orange, yellow and green kilt, big feet, grotesque almost. Pls take a look at my other auctions- intend to list more S&V pieces. No maker's mark. But attributed to Schafer& Vater. Hand painted bisque. With unpainted match-strike strip at bottom and opening in back to use as receptacle for burnt matches. Figure is a grotesquely comical monk in a brown robe. With a row of small holes across the sides and top of his bald head. Holes fit the smaller size wooden matches- shorter and narrower than big wooden kitchen matches- which were commonly used for lighting cigarettes. Pipes, cigars, candles, and oil lamps in the years before paper matchbooks were widely distributed. There are two or three ... morespots with small shrinkage lines from firing of the clay(see photo second from bottom) These are not cracks- they are from surface drying during the making of the piece; they do not go through to the inside of the hollow figure. And there is paint n these lines, showing that they were present when the paint was applied. Painted surfaces have some light soiling. Mostly on the bald head, and a few scattered tiny pinpoint dots of white wall paint on the figure's left side. Except as noted. This piece is in excellent condition, with no chips, breaks, or cracks, or repairs in the bisque, and with all paint entirely original. Here we have a gentleman in old fashioned bathing attire cradling his true love on his lap in the ocean waves.
